Tea and Chocolate were popular drinks to Europeans. The Spanish was especially fond of Chocolate. During the conquest of mesoamerica, the Spanish discovered cocoa beans. From there, they then added sugarcane and heated up the mixture. In doing so , a Hot Chocolate drink was born. By the end of the 16th century , the trade of cocoa was booming to Spain. Chocolate would become a fond drink of the Spanish, served to spanish monarchs, but also drunk by every social class in Spain. This product would become a staple in Spanish culture. Chocolate would later spread to the rest of Europe where they too , would come to appreciate the deliciousness of chocolate. be as popular as in other European countries. Chocolate to the Spanish would be like Tea to the English. Tea , derived from Asia, would not hit England’s radar until 1610, From there, it would be drunk hot strictly by the wealthy (mainly men). Tea would not be greatly accepted into the English culture until the late 16th century when coffee house owner ,Thomas Garaway, would first introduce coffee in his business. (From there many more coffee houses would be introduced in England) Coffee houses were very popular back in this era.
Coffee houses would be a haven for citizens to socialize with friends, discuss politics, and talk about the news . Coffee houses were especially popular due to the fact that specific coffee houses were targeted by similar social class citizens. Thus, there was a coffee house for every walk of life. During this time, coffee houses would grow to become men only clubs, limiting the amount of women gaining access to tea. However, thanks to Catherine of Braganza, she would set an example for women to drink tea by making it a court drink. By doing so , she would lead the way for the social acceptance of both men and woman to drink tea. Not only did Catherine influence women to drink tea, she also popularized the entire concept of consuming tea. Due to this, by 1686 tea would be hit the markets and be sold to citizens. I believe that the preference of drink in these european countries affected their economy and most importantly their culture. To this day , the english are known to drink enormous amounts of tea. It is common to connect tea to the english. If Catherine had not popularized the drinking of tea, the culture of the English would have been altered. In history , choices , no matter how small they are , affect the events of the

their rulers could drink it. Around 1400 BC, the Aztecs conquered most of Mesoamerica and they wanted the cocoa beans the Mayans had. They had one problem though, cocoa trees didn't grow where they lived. What did they do? They traded with the Mayans to get some, and also made the conquered tribes pay tribute. The Aztecs thought that the beans were a gift from Quetzalcoatl, and they were so coveted that they were used as currency, as well as a drink to give the drinker strength and increase fertility. The Mesoamerican tribes continued to drink chocolate until around 1519 AD, when the first Spanish conquistadors arrived in the area. Hernán Cortés wrote down this encounter:

Tea can be found in all parts of the world and it is even England’s national drink, but tea had a slow beginning that started in China. The drink dodged the control of Western countries and took its time becoming a well-known product in the world. Tea soon founds it way to India because of European interests, which is where the beverage’s recognition in the Western hemisphere became prominent.
China became the fountainhead for trading tea and the first country to get the culture of drinking tea from China was Japan in sixth century. After that, in the seventeenth century the Europeans made trade with China for tea starting with the Dutch. But, China was a tough trading partner as they seek not to share the methods of cultivation of tea and moreover, they only demanded gold, silver and copper in return (Goodwin, 1990). The Chinese were able to keep the secrets so discreet that it was only in the nineteenth century that the Europeans came to know that the black and green tea actually come from the same plant (Ukers, 1935). It was the British East India Company that introduced the cultivation of tea in India in the nineteenth century. From there on India became the major tea producing country after China. Currently, about 50% of world’s Tea comes from India and China alone (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations., 2004). The biggest Tea importing countries include Russia, United States of America, Saudi Arabia and United Kingdom.
