When we were little, we thought the word “Career” was not a big deal, but as a senior in high school, the word has become our reality as we start to finish our last semester. The question we’ve been asked all these years is, what do you want to be when you grow up? But our answer is simple: we don’t want to grow up. As an innocent kid it seemed like the time would never come, but it has. It’s time to get serious and really ponder this question.
Throughout this course, topics such as the transition from high school to college, learning skills, self-discovery, and career exploration have been discussed. Conversations occurred concerning the challenges and benefits of private and public colleges as well as the transition from high school to college. We also talked about our strengths and weaknesses while studying. Finally we talked about the jobs that we wanted, and the jobs we would be good at. During the rest of this paper, I will go into more detail about the topics we discussed; and go more in detail with what I learned.

Amundson and Kurt Penner developed the PICE strategy to help counselors guide students (usually age 14 to 18) in preliminary career exploration with the aid of parents. As we begin to grow up and come to the end of our high school career we must start to begin to start thinking about what type of career we want to be in. It is very important that a person picks the right type of career for them. Otherwise you will be unhappy with what you are doing and will not enjoy it at all. I am not entirely sure what I want my career to be but I have a pretty good idea as to what type of job it will be. I would like to go into the field of a physical therapist and sports medicine, I fell I will enjoy this more than any other type of career just because I already have a lot of interest in it.
When a teenager is maturing, one is faced with many challenges. Teenagers may feel like they have so many decisions to make. As a teenager approaches graduation, one may feel overwhelmed. A career counselor is working with a teenager, named Taneka, who is working as a salesperson at a store at a local mall. Her supervisor is impressed by her performance. Taneka’s supervisor is encouraging her to participate in a leadership program. Taneka is torn between joining the work force and going to college after graduating from high school.
By designing this program in the format of a class meeting weekly, I believe the students will take ownership of their learning outcomes. Although this format does require students to attend class, they are allowed the freedom to explore and research potential careers that would be best for them based on their skills, personalities, and interests. Students appreciate the freedom of making choices and will have buy in by being allowed to have input in their futures. For the most part, we are driven by having a purpose and the need for acceptance and approval, therefore, giving students the ability to make their own decisions is beneficial in multiple ways.
This upcoming May, I will officially become a high school graduate. These next few months will fly by, and my collegiate journey will soon begin. As this time draws nearer, I can clarify that having to decide on what career path to focus on is incredibly overwhelming. Due to my sincere desire for learning and my drive to better myself academically, I plan on experimenting in multiple areas in order to discover which will suit myself best.
Life After High School I’ve just entered my senior year of high school. I know that this is a very important year. I have a lot of decisions to make and not much time to make them. Requiring students to select a career path in high school can have a positive effect on both the students’ careers and America’s economy. Students who leave high school unequipped with the appropriate career/college readiness skills have little to no chance for a successful future. Many people determine "what they want to be when they grow up" just as soon as they are able to talk, but the truth is, by the time they graduate high school, they change your mind at least five times. When a person first enter high school, their teachers and guidance counselors should explain what classes need to be taken in order to enter college. By the time one reaches their senior year, their career path(s) and a career outline that supports the path should be determined. In addition, a realistic set of goals should be created. An individual should research the best school that meets their career choices, know what college classes must be taken, and lastly they should began researching jobs for the chosen career(s) choice. However, even with all this planning, a career path is still not really defined until an individuals sophomore year in college. According to the article, "Career Entrenchment...", the authors stated that "many people choose their career at the age of eighteen or nineteen, before they know all about the available choices" (Carson & Carson, 1996). Career management is a necessity because an individual can plan their career early so that they won’t be forced into a job that they are really unsatisfied with. The authors also stated that "Individuals too often select careers based on their perceived ability, experience, or skill" not by their interests (Carson & Carson, 1996). That’s why career management is a really important aspect for a persons future plans. Individuals should always choose a career that interests them not one that’s based on salary or perceived success. That way, changes can be made if they occur and a person will know how to balance their personal life and their career. Career Management for the 21st Century is a necessity because there must be a developed method of job search strategies and a developed back-up plan in case of career change.
During childhood many people are hopeful and optimistic with ways to pursue their dream. Reality sets in the early stage of adulthood. It is difficult to juggle the life factors of school, work, family and career progression all at once. This is the case for many of people that realise that they are not in the job they want to be in permanently. Career progression is essential for a better quality of life that leads to the self satisfaction of achieving such goals.
