“Letter to the King and Queen of Spain”, is a letter that was composed circa 1494 by an unknown author, who we can assume based off of his works- is a Navigator. Originally written in Spanish, this letter dives into the history of a voyage our fearless Navigator sailed, the third time that he traveled to the Indies for exploration. He introduces the purpose of his letter by declaring, “I have determined to write you this letter to inform you of everything that has been done in this voyage of mine” (101). When this Explorer returned from his voyage, he immediately wrote to the King and Queen announcing his discoveries, as they were the ones who funded his trip. The main purpose of his voyage was to explore and discover unknown lands. He comes across as being tremendously biblically knowledgeable in his writings, as he often references biblical characters that he would only know from studying the bible. Such as, “Nor were they affected by the consideration of what great princes throughout the world have done to increase their fame: as for example, Solomon, who sent from Jerusalem, to the uttermost parts of the East, to see Mount Sopora, in which expedition his ships were detained three years; and which mountain your highnesses now possess” (108). He is boastful of his self-taught, enlightening knowledge! There is indeed a large chance that the author of this letter could be religious, it is evident from these statements he has written that he is exceedingly educated on the bible.
