The letter is addressed to “the beloved Gaius” (vs. 1), who seems to be standing almost alone in his cordial reception of the traveling preachers and in helping them on their way. Apparently the writer (who is John) has received repeated testimony to the kindliness of Gaius (vss. 3, 6), not only from the Church but from those who were welcomed by Gaius when they were strangers to others (vs. 5).
