Dear Donald Trotta
My name is Jeffrey Magloire and I am a current matriculating student at Sullivan County Community College I have a couple of issues that I wanted to bring forward to your attention. As you may or may not know Sullivan County Community College has just constructed a new dormitory for incoming students. This Dormitory has opened up doors to many students that could not handle the commute to and from school. Although the dormitory has been an advantage to students traveling; the students have been living in poor condition for the last five weeks. The first problem occurred the day we walked in. The students were put into rooms where the paint smell was still resident and was the cause of two asthma attacks. We still have not received camera’s which would have been no problem if they had more than two security guards for each shift in our 350 capacity student dorm. I have read the contract that was handed to me and the dormitory has violated many promises made on that contract. The first violation has made many students drop out of school and go home and miss one semester of school. The Dormitory Corporation promised us daily maintenance on all of our bathrooms but the maintenance workers come only three times a week which has raised hazardous fumes coming from the bathroom and also the bathroom utensils are not available to students frequently which has deferred the students from having proper hygiene. The roof fire alarm has not been turned off due to the shortness of security officers and the alarm goes off every night due to loitering. They also promised that we will have telephone service which has not been honored and most of students have no way of contacting their friends and family. The School has one phone line and that one phone line is occupied by resident assistant, resident managers, security and is also the phone that security uses to contact the fire department in case of emergency.
This school has had 5 principals in 4 years. I spoke earlier about this school being a part of the I-zone. The I-zone is a special subset of schools within Shelby County that are given the task of leading a school from the bottom 5% to the top 25%. In that there is a high turnover rate with administrators and teachers. I was selected to be a turnaround principal given a certain amount of time with the authority to make necessary changes. The community asked for a principal they could relate to. They wanted to be involved with the school and wanted resources given back to them so they could help their children. I listen to community concerns and established a parent power committee so they could be partners in education with us. We reached out into the community to garner some wrap around services to help and support our students. We gained seven (7) new Adopters who have formally taken the charge to provide resources that all students will need to achieve academically. Life Church gives us food. Bellview Baptist Church comes in and tutors all our 2nd grade students. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity has volunteered to come in and work with our students on STEM projects. We have Omega Psi Phi who comes in an exposes our kids to social and character development. And the list goes on. There just so many programs and organizations ready to work with us because they know
The Lost Letters of Pergamum by Bruce W. Longenecker begins with an interesting author’s preface that explains the book. In the preface, Longenecker explains that this book is about Antipas, who is mentioned once in the book of revelations of the bible, and that this work is fictional. He also illustrates that this story is a reconstruction of Antipas’ life in his final years. It is also explained how Antipas got his name from Herod Antipas. The preface goes on to explain that although this work is fiction, it is based upon extensive research of the author about the time period in which he is writing and has historical merit with regards to the Roman Empire and Jesus’ teachings. Longenecker notes in his introduction that the editor’s preface is also fictional. The editor’s preface is constructed in a very compelling manner that makes it seem almost real. It discusses discoveries of ancient cities of Ephesus and Pergamum and their temples and houses. The architects dug up Pergamum and there they discovered the letters of Antipas.
Martin Luther King Jr. was placed in jail after participating in the Birmingham campaign. At this time King was president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and his presence was requested by an Alabama group that wanted him to participate in a "nonviolent direct-action program" in Birmingham. King along with other member of his group agreed to go and participate. These nonviolent protests resulted in the participents being thrown into jail. While in jail, eight clergymen wrote in the paper staying blacks should not support for Martin Luther King Jr. and the other protestors. King replied to the clergymen a few days later with a letter and aimed towards the "white moderate" as well. The "white moderate" is the white population and King wanted them to hear his opinion on the matter. In this letter king is explaining the actions of himself as well as his fellow protestors in the movement. King uses logic, ethics, and emotion to persuade his audience why civil rights should be given to African Americans. The use of these three elements throughout his whole letter along with imagery king is able to create a visual and persuasive piece that shows his point of view.
This short memo is being sent out to inform your office about the issues of homelessness and how homelessness is tied into our society. The topics that will be covered in the memo are, the definition of homelessness, how it affects society, the different causes of homelessness, and how it is going to affect society in the future if something is not done about it now. A homeless person is characterized as someone who does not have a stable or permanent residence and frequently sleeps in public or private monitored places. There are many causes of homelessness but the main ones are lack of affordable housing, addictions and long term mental issues. Homelessness is not just a burden upon a few people but on the society as a whole, incarcerations, hospitalization, medical expenses and emergency shelters are some of the expenditures society pays for from taxes. If this problem isn’t taken care of, there will be more people in poverty, more uneducated people and the gap between the rich and poor will grow tremendously. Homelessness is an issue that needs a long term solution.
Management and leadership are viewed as two different perspectives in the business environment. As described by Dr. Warren Bennis ‘Managers are people who do things right, while leaders are people who do the right thing’, this means that managers do things by the set rules and follow company policy, while leaders follow their own intuition, which may in turn be of more benefit to the company.
The Project Management Institute (PMI) was formed in 1969 to provide a non-profit organization for project professionals. This global organization offers eight different endorsements to aid project management professionals in acquiring positions with higher wages and career prospects (Learn about PMI, n.d.). The Project Management Institute is the foremost authority in project management (PM) fundamentals and serves as the lead organization for project administration. With organizational groups that extend globally, this institution
In my view leadership and management are two different aspects which are equally important for development of any organization. Both are interdependent sometimes depending on certain situations. Leadership is something which imbibes the quality to inspire, motivate, build trust and relationships, provide ideas and make some spontaneous decisions accordingly; whereas Management is something which involves balancing all factors responsible to run any kind of organization.
Presently many of us have learned that managers are primarily administrators who have learned to write business plans, utilize their resources and keep track of progress. We must learn that we are not limited by job title, and that means we can utilize our management skills in any position that we are in. We must also know that we can use our leadership skills in the same situations. On the other hand we have also learned that leaders are people who have an impact on those that surround them. The main difference that separates these two roles is that management is a function that must be utilized in any type of business, and leadership is the relationship that the leader has with his followers, which in turn can motivate and energize the organization.
I am writing this essay to represent my knowledge of the current school residential rules and regulations that I have broken on multiple occasions. I was told to write this essay due to my lack of education on the rules regarding residential life guest and visitation, residential lif noise quiet hours violations, residential life keys and registration, and residential life compliance which lead to me breaking the rule on campus. On November 18th, 2015, the UMBC peer review council met to hear my case arising from my November 4, 2015 charge letter. Here I was found guilty for all the charges against me. On this campus, my main focus should be to do well in my classes and learn from my experiences. Causing trouble throughout residential buildings should not be a part of any of the action that I have came to school for. To show my understanding of the rules and regulations that I have broken I will state the rules I have went against and show I have went against them, I will also state the consequences given to me and show how these incidents have affected my life on campus directly.
There is a difference between management and leadership but that does not mean that one is less important than the other. However, it takes an excellent leader and manager to be able to fulfill the Leadership and Management role successfully for the benefit of the company and his or her people in all aspects of the business fields. Therefore, every company, big or small, must have people whom they can depend on, whole heartedly, who can fulfill the Leadership and Management positions without worrying about negative outcomes or costly legal issues.
An organization is often viewed as systems and management is often defined as human action that facilitate any organization , in other words management is said to be a distinct process that comprises of planning , organizing , actuating and controlling. It is practiced in order to accomplish pre determined objectives. (George R. Terry) Leadership is another facet that accelerates the further process of management , it is one of the key components of direction which is further termed as an asset required for successful management of an organization. Management and leadership are two different notions that are interchangeable but having different approaches with a similar outlooks. Management as a whole is a process that is having main focus on completion of task efficiently at minimal cost. The main aim of a management is to direct all the activities related to an organization towards accomplishment of targeted goals. On the flip side leadership is said to be more directed towards vision and inspiration, it is often regarded as an influential process in an organization that is carried on by an individual which has a focus on achieving the targeted goal that is recognized and benchmarked by the management. In today’s 21st century both effective mangers as well as efficient leader play a vital role.
... important. Managers are focused on control, structure and systems through administering and making sure that the every day activities are happening as they should. Leaders are future orientated and are adept at innovating, articulating a vision, building strategies and inspiring growth and development in others. Managers should adopt leadership capabilities and skills, as it is very value adding to the organisation. With the rise of the knowledge workers, the task is to lead people rather than manage people. “The goal is to make ‘productive’ the specific strength and knowledge of every individual”(wall street journal). It is evident that effective leaders manage, and effective managers also lead. Both roles marry each other impeccably. In order for an organisation to achieve their goals and results, they need both strong leadership and management to be present.
Within the organizational structure of most businesses you will likely find management and leadership coexisting. Commonly, the words are often substituted for one another. However, each word has a distinctly different definition. A manager does not necessarily make a good manager. Management is defined as those individuals in an organization that have the authority and the responsibility to manage the organization through the control of production processes and ensuring that they operate efficiently and effectively. Leadership is defined as the skills and ability to set future goals in accordance with the organizational goals and to communicate those goals to other employees in such a way that they voluntarily and harmoniously work together to accomplish those goals for the benefit of the organization. In this paper, I will differentiate between management and leadership.
Leadership and management are two words that are used interchangeably. However, these words actually describe two different concepts. Leadership is just one of the many assets a successful manager must possess. The main aim of a manager is to maximize the output of the organization through administrative implementation. To achieve this, managers must use organizing, planning, staffing, directing, and controlling but a manager cannot just be a leader, he/she also needs formal authority to be effective.
Sustainable development means that the present generations should be able to make use of resources to live better lives in such a manner that it doesn’t compromise the ability of future generations to survive and make better lives for themselves as well. For sustainable development to occur, there needs to be sustainable economic, ecological and community development. Society needs to be educated about ways in which they can use resources, especially natural, in such a manner that it doesn’t cause harm to the environment and put future generations lives at risk.
