Lessons Learned From Vietnam War Essay

Many important lessons have been learned from studying, researching and exploring the Vietnam War. This process is certainly not just about “reading” and absorbing information, it is about exploring and researching from multiple viewpoints. Learning about the Vietnam War is about discovering, and using critical thinking skills to determine the most accurate and valuable information.
I have learned that in diplomatic relations there is not a clear cut solution or answer. I have learned that everyone has their own personal goal in making decisions that will have an impact on the world. Domestic affairs, and what it happening domestically has a tremendous impact on international decisions. As an example, after the Tet Offensive Americas eyes were opened up to the happenings in Vietnam and diplomatic efforts were changed in response to these domestic concerns. I have learned the surprising fact that presidential leaders struggle with their decisions. I was surprised to learn that it seemed during the Vietnam War that the presidents had not one person or adviser that they could truly trust and rely upon. It was truly “lonely” at the top. I have learned that many of the decisions that the presidential leaders made, they made with their own political career in mind. I learned that Vietnam was an international event, however it was controlled by domestic concern and issues. The path of the war was changed by domestic awareness and involvement. As an example, President Johnson mounted a vigorous public relations campaign designed to bolster popular support for his war policy (Moss, 2010).
