The main objective of this lesson is to make the students able to understand information, whether it is in written or audio-video format, related to climate change so that they would be able to use that information in spoken or written communication. Climate change, as we know it, is a very popular topic. We could perhaps find this topic discussed in the news, internet, or on TV almost on a daily basis. Some people may also bring this topic in their conversation with friends, family, etc. In a similar situation, ESL students may need to know what is discussed on TV or news about the topic. They may also want to talk about it to their friends and classmates or perhaps they need to response to discussion or question in case some people ask them about it. Therefore, giving ESL students a lesson about climate change could be useful since this topic is relevant to what they may need in the real life.
Another objective of this lesson is to build students’ awareness about climate change. Exposing them to the information about it (e.g. the case of Iceland) would hopefully stimulate them to think about the issue. Getting them involved in a discussion about tips for reducing carbon emission, for example, would also promote critical thinking, which is important for them because they want to continue their study in colleges and universities in the US.
In opening the lesson, I try to activate their background knowledge by using pictures and questions. This is critical because this could help them relate what they have known to what they are going to have. Within this paper we will take a brief look at the Language Acquisition Principles and how they work on the behalf of ELL students. We will see how these principles can be applied within our own learning environment. There is much information from Walqui article that gives a brief overview of ELL students and how things looked in the past for these students. Now that times has change we will see how educators can make the requirements for ELL students better and more effective for teacher and students. Hopefully, as we look at ways of changing learning for our ELL students we must remember that every student learns differently. Even if you follow the principles from 1-8 we must keep in mind that everyone is unique and process things within their own time table.
This video successfully uses the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos and logos to support its claims on climate change. The way National Geographic uses ethos, or credibility, for this video is strong and thought out. The main speaker is none other than Bill Nye, who most students grew up watching in elementary school; to learn different aspects of science; and is a very respectable and credible speaker for this topic, of climate change. Nye graduated from Cornell University with a degree in mechanical engineering, then moved to Seattle, Washington to work as an engineer for Boeing and ultimately became a science educator, winning educational awards for his famous program, “Bill Nye the Science Guy”(Biography.com). Nye has extremely credible credentials to be able to speak about this topic of science, who speaks in a serious, concerned and informative manner to grab the attention of the viewer and explain that climate change is a serious affair that needs to be acted upon.
