When Lena and Harold start fighting, “Just Give Me a Reason” would be a great way to capture the feelings that the couple is feeling. Just like the Lena and Harold, the song talks about two partners who are in a relationship but are having trouble communicating with each other. The song would be a perfect fit for this story since it goes hand in hand with it, even switching point of views halfway through the song. As the song continues, it leaves the relationship open to the future, just like Lena and Harold’s. As soon as Lena and Harold’s fight begins, the first verse of the song comes on “Right from the start / You were a thief you stole my heart / And I your willing victim.” This describes what Lena is feeling at the beginning of the argument. Her heart was stolen by Harold and fell in love with him, but now she sees that she has been a victim of marriage and hasn’t been treated fairly. “I just don’t think you should get credit for your ice cream anymore” (Tan 164). Harold doesn’t understand what Lena is saying and as the argument …show more content…
Harold doesn’t understand what Lena is talking about. He thought that their relationship was doing fine and that it didn’t need fixing. “What is this? Why don’t you say what’s really the matter?” “Then tell me, please, what is the point?” (Tan 164) By the end of the story, Harold and Lena both are contemplating the future and that’s when the end comes with the chorus again but this time both P!nk and Nate Ruess are singing together. Just like them, Harold and Lena are on the same page now with both understanding what the other is saying. Like the relationship in the song, Lena and Harold’s relationship is left open to
The song is not only expressing his love for girls, it’s also a metaphor for his love Hip-Hop. This is another example of Lupe’s Fiasco lyrical skills.
The major conflict in Spunk is the two main male characters fighting over the love of Lena Kanty. The character Spunk is in love with Lena but she is married to Joe. Spunk still struts around town with Lena on his arm in front of the town, getting the loungers to talk. “A giant of a brown skinned man sauntered up the one street of the village…with a small pretty woman clinging lovingly to his arm” (Hurston). This displays Spunk and Lena not trying to hide their relationship from the towns people or Joe. Hurston also showed Joe’s cowardliness by stating, “Now Joe knew his wife had passed that way. He...
Her attitude towards the subject is not the typical adoration that is often present in this form of poetry. Having the speaker and the subject be the same person allows Alleyne to have a critical look at herself in this moment of her life. The phrase “sweet girl,” describes the subject with an unexpected negative connotation (Line 5). Sweet is defined as, “dear to the person [herself], usually sarcastically” (OED Online). The connotation of this is that, looking back on the situation, she believed that she was being naïve in this moment. Blame is placed onto the subject for not understanding the situation at the time. This self-blame is a setback in the healing process. The use of the sonnet allows Alleyne to make implications without directly spelling them out; she is able to show express her disappointment with her reaction to the situation without explicitly stating it. The act of writing the sonnets allows Alleyne to express the frustrations that she was unable to communicate after the night of her sexual assault; being able to find the words now shows a moment of progression in Alleyne’s
Trina’s intent was to create a song that liberated women from the double standards and stereotypical views placed upon them. Her song however can cause harm to young women that listen to take this song to heart. Instead of liberation, we are moved further down into the hole of degrading and devaluing women. Trina should’ve sent the message that these things were wrong. Instead she endorsed and encouraged them.
In this case Rebecca walker’s struggles come from her moving around so often in her childhood and being unable to have a lasting healthy relationship with one person. All throughout the book, Black, White, and Jewish she continuous to develop friendships with many people but never refers back to most of them. At one point in her life, she begins associating with the wrong type of friends and hits a rough patch in her life where she does drugs, and gets sexually active with men much older than her. Lena was one of Rebecca’s friends that encouraged her bad behavior. Often, Rebecca and Lena would snick into Lena’s father’s study and take weed from his desk and get high and then munch of snacks all night while talking about the most recent drama. Michael was a guy that Rebecca had a major crush on and they would stay up late at night talking on the phone. Until one day he bribed her into letting him come over to doctor him up. She prepared hot tea for him and slipped around the house with a nice robe on. That night she lost her
If we just simply look at the video from a viewer’s perspective, we will just see a poor farmer boy falling in love with a rich and powerful girl. We must look further than just the basic of the video and pay attention to the behind the scenes meanings of each image and object. In the last couple of seconds of the video, we see Nintuda preparing the time and place for where Hunabatum and Kullasina-Bel will meet to confess their love for each other. She prepares a nice rug on the floor of a room in the Ziggurat. This represents the bridal sheet and represents the high priestess preparing the holy bed where Dumuzi and Inanna come together. When Kullasina-Bel makes his way to the temple, he is carrying with him Billy the Goat to take as an offering to Hunabatum. This is one of the most powerful scenes in the video because it depicts exactly when King Dumuzi brings many offerings to Queen Inanna to prove that he is worthy of her. Once Hunabatum and Kullasina-Bel meet, there is an instant energy that rejoices their hearts and makes them fall in love with each other. Just as the music video ends, we hear two last lines of the song which utter “Let it flow from eat to mouth, Hunabatum and Kullasina-Bel kiss sensually with no doubt” (Hymns 36). This last clip seals the theme of the video as a scared union between both Hunabatum and Kullasina-Bel as they follow the same foundations of Dumuzi and Inanna and where they
“Wrecking Ball” is pop ballad sung by the American recoding artist Miley Cyrus. Once known and adored by many as “Hannah Montana”, Cyrus shed her childish shell and adopted a sexualized and edgy persona for her fourth album, Bangerz, which “Wrecking Ball” is the album’s second single. The song starts with a quiet and minimalist synthesized keyboard instrumentation which is immediately met with the anguished vocals of Cyrus. Even in the first 30 seconds where only 26 words were sung, the topic of the song is quite evident: a failing relationship. Cyrus starts by crooning “We clawed, we chained our hearts in vain, we jumped never asking why, we kissed, I fell under your spell. A love no one could deny” which could be interpreted as two lovers fought to be together and succeeded in doing so but it was ultimately useless as denoted by “we chained our hearts in vain”. As the song progresses the minimalist keyboard continues creating an open environment in which Cyrus’ emotive vocals can shine. When the refrain is introduced Cyrus’ vocals and the keyboard instrumentation briefly disappear and when they reemerge they are joined with booming percussion that hits sharply, then slowly dissipates. Cyrus’ vocal delivery also changes from the softer, anguished sound to a powerful, almost vindictive roar which quickly returns to the soft delivery with a quiver as Cyrus sings “Yeah, you, yo...
The singer talks about a man who wants to be involved with her romantically. However, she is only interested in friendship and wants to do more conventionally masculine activities with the man who is romantically pursuing her. She talks about wanting to play in the dirt, getting into fights, and drinking till the early morning which actions that are typically associated with men. The lyrics of this song layout strict gender binaries as to what “bros” do. The key part of the song that addresses the contradiction of biological determinism and preforming gender arrives when the lead singer states, “I may have girly parts, but I have a boys heart”. The singer is addressing the fact that other she was born female her actions and behaviors are not determined by the gender she was assigned to because of her biological sex. This theme corresponds to the music video by which the female artists have visibly apparent underarm hair, displaying their defiance to what is expected of females by not preforming their gender and engaging in altering their secondary sex characteristics through hair
I choose the song “Rude” because I thought it fit the book well. This song represents Hester Prynne from the book since Hester had committed a sinful act and was punished by wearing the scarlet letter for the rest of her life. This song mostly represents the townspeople calling or making mean comments toward Hester especially during the scaffold scene. The lyrics I choose out of the song Why you gotta be so rude? Don't you know I'm human too Why
Robin Thicke has a popular songs called Blurred Lines which was released in mid 2013. The song spread quickly and rose straight to the top of the charts. This is where the song remained for the next ten weeks; which was the first time any single lasted that long since 2005. A majority of people had at least heard the song, if they weren’t able to sing every word of it. Many people found the song to be undeniable catchy, but not many people looked at the subtext of the lyrics. As the song remained popular for a longer period of time, people became aware of what the song lyrics were actually saying. The literal lines of the song talks about meeting a girl and not knowing if there is blurred lines because she’s a good girl. Once the lyrics were analyzed deeper, many realized that the song was not as innocent as it seemed.
Lena and Harold’s relationship is based entirely on their attempts to be completely balanced and share everything equally with each other. If they’re dining out, they split the check. If they’re buying groceries, they have separate lists. One lyric in the song says, “You hit me once, I hit you back. You gave a kick, I gave a slap.” This correlates with the story in that their unsuccessful attempts to be “even” and “fair” that end in pain and resentment no matter what. Lena and Harold are trying too hard to save their relationship through the power of equality, but they’re just digging a trench between themselves and growing further and further apart.
The author uses clear hyperbole to emphasize her wrongdoings with lines like three, “What a cyanide surprise you have left for my eyes,” and then by comparing the ‘love’ she showed him to being hung before an audience of the dead in line twelve, “If this is love I don't wanna be hanging by the neck before an audience of death” which both show that her actions were extreme and could just as well have been death therefore deserves revenge done unto her. However he also uses lines like “You've got me shaking from the way you're talking” (one) and “If I had common sense I'd cut myself or curl up and die” (four) to allow the reader to be let in on his mocking of the audience’s actions because Matthews’ had obviously gotten over the initial pain of the incident and was now plotting revenge. The hyperbole Nicholas Matthews used when describing his current emotions toward the audience is evidence of how he wanted to demonstrate that revenge is just in terms of loss of love because those that commit evil deserve evil done unto
This music video is told from the perspective of the queen. She has no king and is searching for an equal. A group of men come to her bearing gifts to show they are worthy of such an honor. If the gift is not sufficient Perry uses her dark magic upon the man and transforms the man into an object. Katy Perry is the center of attention and is always in the front of the camera. The
There is always going to be a boy versus girl issue brewing. The song "Why Can 't Girls Be More like Boys" illustrates the ongoing debate between boys and girls. A male 's perspective on the world and its affairs is entirely, from top to bottom, different than a female 's. This song has Karan pointing fingers at girls for not accepting boys the way they are
Each song has it’s own unique story to tell through it’s lyrics. In a single song or multiple songs, things like heartbreak, death, romance, or even friendship can be expressed. For example, a song like “No Good in Goodbye” by the Script talks about the heartbreaking end in a relationship through its lyrics. It starts out with a semi upbeat and fast-paced instrumental with a yearning tone to it’s sound. After the introduction, consisting of just the instrumental, the music begins to slow down and the drums come to a halt and you begin to hear the singer sing along with the sound of a piano playing in the background. This song opens up strongly by singing about the losses that happen when a breakup occurs and all the regret and
