The Greenland Natives were killed around 1000 A.D and many assumed that Leif Erikson was the murder. However, the time that this occurred Erikson was around the age of 8. How could an 8 year old kill all those natives? The answer is that he didn’t kill them, his father did. Erik the red was Leif’s father and the culprit of the Greenland Native’s deaths. Some people may have associated Leif with his father or just thought Leif did it all. But according to Saga Of Erik The Red, c. 1000 Red did it all.
(7 There once was an Italian man by the name of Amerigo Vespucci, who sailed the seas and explored South America. And later named America after himself.
Christopher Columbus discovered the America’s for Spain in 1492. The explorers and settlers that settled in Central and South America were mostly Spanish and Portuguese. The English took notice of the Spanish success in the America’s, so they decided to explore the upper part of the America’s, North America, in the late 1500’s.
Queen Isabella was born in 1451, in the city of Castile, Spain (Leon 75). She was the daughter of King John II and Arevalo (Maltby par 1). Her family was very strong Catholics and she was born and raised a Catholic. Her brother, Alfonso, became King. He banished her mother, younger brother, and her from the kingdom (Leon 75, 77). Isabella had chestnut hair with natural red highlights and her look was demure and soft. She went to school with nuns at Santa Ana Convent. At school, she fancied reading, writing, music, and painting. In her free time, she was tutored at home with her older brother. After her childhood, she learned treachery was everywhere. As a teenager, her family forced her to marry a scoundrel. That day, she prayed to God for deliverance. On the way to their wedding, he choked and died from bronchitis. From that day on, she was ready for what was coming her way.
Many people think that Christopher Columbus was the first European to set foot in America, but this conventional belief is wrong; Leif Erikson, a Norse explorer set foot in Newfoundland almost 500 years before Columbus was even born. This paper will cover everything about Leif Erikson’s life including his grandfather’s banishment from Norway, and Leif’s father’s exile from Iceland. Leif Erikson’s early life, his family, and his visit to Norway to serve under the king. The first recorded European to see North America, Bjarni Herjólfsson, and Leif Erikson’s voyage to America. This paper is also going to talk about Leif Erikson’s brother, Thorvald Erikson’s voyage to Vinland because his tale is interesting. Near the end of this research paper, it will have a paragraph on Leif Erikson’s later life. Finally at the end of this paper it is going to talk about the unknown reason why no other Europeans sailed to Vinland, and Leif’s impact on modern day North America.
When Isabella’s brother died, she had to fight for the crown of Castile. After her father died when she was three years old, Isabella became the heiress to her brother King Henry IV (Amadó). Ferdinand helped Isabella in the war of succession. This was fought with Juana after the de...
Leif Erikson was believed to be born 960 A.D. Other sources show that there is no exact birthdate but he was born sometime in the 10th century (901-1000 A.D). He was born in Iceland, yet he was raised in Greenland. His family consisted of his father Erik the Red, mother Thjodhild, brothers Thorvald and Thorstein, sister Freydis, his grandfather Thorvald and grandmother Asvald Asvaldsson, great-grandfather Asvald Ulfsson, and later his two sons Thorkell and Thorgils. As you can see Thor(insert something) and Asvald was a family name passed down from generations. He, his father, and his mother were the ones with more unique names. He was the middle child in his family. His last name has been spelled in
At the age of 6 she had decide to marry Ferdinand, the son of John II of Narve. This marriage would show the alliance of the two kingdoms of Spain that people would see all over the world. After the marriage was called off many times due to disagreements with the kingdoms, the marriage took place October 19, 1469. They were second cousins and so their marriage would not be legal unless they got a dispensation from the Pope. A year later they got the dispensation form the Pope and they were soon married legally.
Ferdinand was born in Sada Palace, in the Kingdom of Aragon to John II of Aragon. When Ferdinand of Argon and Isabella of Castile married they did so with an understanding “that they amount to the same and to the same they amount”. This agreement was legalized by the courts through a prenuptial agreement. This was significant in that it would bring a union between the crown of Aragon and the Kingdom of Castile. The marriage between Isabella and Ferdinand was not a romantic one in nature. This is what my generation would refer to as a power couple. The kingdom of Aragon also included important kingdoms such as Valencia, Sicily, and Naples. Throughout this paper I will discuss the power of the Catholic monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand.
The Swedish Vikings were the Vikings that were the most powerful11. The Swedish Vikings were also the best traders out of all the other types of Vikings and were the Vikings that might have reached North America11. The Danish Vikings were the Vikings that mostly raided villages and robbed people11. The Viking that discovered Iceland was a Norwegian king named Ingolf Arnarson he discovered it in 870 A.D11. The most famous Viking was Erik the red; he murdered one of his enemies. The result for him murdering a man was he was to be exiled from Iceland for three years, he then gathered a crew and left Iceland11. He was the first person to find Greenland; he then went back to Iceland and told the other Vikings about Greenland about how it was inhabited and about the good natural resources there11.
John Cabot was the man who, in 1497, discovered the coast of North America. He was inspired by the discoveries of Bartolomeu Dias and Christopher Columbus. Cabot was sailing Bristol, and he thought he had sailed into Asia. It was actually Canada.
In reality, the ship of Gunnbjorn Ulf-Krakason has the first recorded sighting of Greenland circa 900. The ship was thrown off course in storm on a voyage from Norway to Iceland (Logan, F.D.). Erik set foot on Greenland much later in the early 980s (Logan, F.D.). The reason history says he discovered Greenland is because he was the leader in its settlement. Erik left Iceland in 982 looking for Gunnbjorn Ulf-Krakason’s land west of Iceland. The sagas say that “[Erik] purposed to seek for the land which Gunnbjorn, the son of Ulf the Crow, saw when he was driven westwards over the ocean” (“The Saga of Erik the Red”). He spent his three years in exile there and then returned home to bring settlers (Pörnter, Rudolf). Erik the Red sailed from Iceland to Greenland with twenty-five ships, according to the sagas. Although some ships turned back or sunk so only fourteen arrived in Greenland (Logan, F.D.). There is archeological proof to back up this research such as remains in Brattahlid, where Erik’s farm resided (Pörnter, Rudolf). Since Erik the Red had such a major impact on Greenland and Viking history, one can see why he was remembered instead of
Five hundred years before Columbus, a group of vikings were led by Leif Erikson. Leif Erikson was born in Iceland, the son of Eric the Red. He moved with his parents to Greenland in 986. He was the first Norseman to seek out the coast of North America and he introduced Christianity into Greenland. After his first trip to Vinland, he returned to the family estate of Brattahlíð in Greenland, and started preaching Christianity to the Greenlanders. Erikson was described as wise, considerate,
Have you ever wondered where the name America came from? Or maybe how the people got here? The answer is Amerigo Vespucci. Amerigo Vespucci is a famous Italian explorer born around 1451. His exact birth year isn’t known for sure. He was born in Florence, Italy. Before he went on his world changing adventure of finding the Americas, he was a regular boy. In his youth, Vespucci spent a lot of time studying navigation and maps. When he was a teenager, he worked in the “banking firm of Lorenzo di Pier Francesco de’ Medici.” (worldbook online.) In 1491, Vespucci moved to Seville, Spain. When he moved there, he got connected to a company that worked on equipping ships for long trips.
Amerigo Vespucci is responsible for theorizing that the America was a separate continent and not a part of Asia. Before Vespucci made his famous voyages to the Americas he was the manager of all the Medici’s family’s merchant business. In 1493, all of Spain was abuzz with Columbus news of a new route to India (Which was actually America). Amerigo recognized the great opportunity and managed to get himself assigned to an expedition back to the Americas in 1499. He was likely the first European to see the coast of modern-day Brazil on this trip and, as a cosmographer, brought a scientific eye to the New World. The fleet made it back to Spain in 1500. After returned, Vespucci managed to gain the ear of the Portuguese king, and in May of 1501, he was at the head of a Lisbon fleet of three
