Since when did men and women, or even girls and boys start not caring about each other, but involve each other in situations that are not only physical, but mentally dangerous as well. The risk people take whenever they lay themselves down with another person for the single reason being sex, is unbelievable. People do not know the risks they take therefor they continue to expose themselves to dangerous situations including different types of STDs, and many mental affects that come with casual sex in men and women. Most people do not take in consideration those risks that they put themselves through simply because they were not aware, or they simply believe that there is nothing too terrible that could not be corrected, which is such a dangerous …show more content…
“Last Night” is a poem told from one of the character’s point of view, which is interesting because it never actually tells whether it was the man or the woman’s perspective. It talks about how that individual specifically knew that there was not a connection between the two, and I honestly do not think he or she was very happy about it. Unlike the poem “Leaving the Motel,” the character that tells the story from their point of view seems disappointed in themselves for letting themselves get in a situation where they know that there are no feelings, as if they wanted something better that what they are accepting, they might just be scared to put themselves in a situation like that. This tends to be a bigger problem that shows up more than it should in todays society. While people think that casual sex is fun and what they want to experience throughout their younger years, it actually causes more problems than people …show more content…
He believes that the problems that casual sex brings to peoples’ minds is much more extensive then people take it as. He believes that it is a much more serious problem, and the physical consequences are nothing compared to what it actually does to our brains. In Leaps article, he actually pinpointed out some research done by two professors, Joe McIlhaney and Freda Bush. These two professors did research on what the effects of casual sex do to the brain, and the results are terrifying. In their research, McIlhaney and Bush wrote “With the aid of modern research techniques and technologies, scientists are confirming that sex is more than a momentary physical act. It produces powerful, even lifelong changes in our brains that direct and influence our future to a surprising degree” (The Brain and Sex). Both of these researchers actually took the time to do mental research on what casual sex does to the brain because it is a serious issue that people in todays world do not make themselves aware of. Leap goes on in his article to further explain why our brain reacts so strongly to sex and what actually causes it. He explains how there are actual chemicals that are released in the brain that trigger whenever our body recognizes certain things. These chemicals vary within men and women, which explains why sometimes men and women have different views, and emotions on casual sex. The two chemicals that he Leap says are
Night Waitress by Lynda Hull is a poem that describes the feelings of a waitress that works the night shift of a diner Reflection of “Night Waitress” “Night Waitress” by Lynda Hull is a poem that describes the feelings of a waitress that works the night shift of a diner. The speaker obviously belongs to a lower social class, in the way of income and her occupation. Much like the character in this poem, the speaker in “The Chimney Sweeper” by William Blake works long, hard hours as a chimneysweeper. These two characters are both related in their ways of life and their classes in our society.
In conclusion, what I learned from this article is that sex is much more complicated then I could have believed it to be. This article made me aware of many conflicts, issues, and disagreements that go along with what is or isn’t sex, and how there is no clear way to say, it’s really just a matter of opinion. For lesbians the simple use of a finger is enough, for gay men its anal sex. For some sex is innate and instinctive, while others believe it is learned. For some it’s based on love and pleasure, while for others it’s about domination. I highly doubt that there is anyone in this world that could come up with a universal meaning to sex which would please all parties. It is my conclusion that there is no right or wrong definition of sex; it is whatever
The use of imagery is very commonly used in fictional literary work, especially poems. Imagery according to Crowder Collage Introduction to Literature’s glossary, “The collective set of images in a poem or other literary work,” (1991). The definition of imagery is rather vague by itself. It is very enlightening on the other hand when the term image is defined, “A word or series of words that refers to any sensory experience (usually sight, although also sound smell, touch or taste). An image is a direct or literal recreation of physical experience and adds immediacy to literary language,” (Gioia 1991).The imagery in Chana Bloch’s “Tired Sex” is a wonderfully helpful in communicating the poem’s general theme.

The poem “Last Night” by Sharon Olds is about a sexual experience that she had. In the article, “Sharon Olds” the author states, “Olds is known for writing intensely personal, emotionally scathing poetry which graphically depicts family life as well as global political events”. Throughout the poem Olds uses graphic imagery to tell about this experience that she has had. She uses words such as “death-grip holding to life, violent hands clasped tight barley moving, like being closed in a great jaw and eaten”. The thought of rape should come with the use of these words and sex because of how violent it is but at no point in the poem does she say she does want to be having sex or wish it would stop. Then at the end of the poem she goes on to say that “you secured me in your arms till I slept- that was love” this part of the poem is saying that it isn’t sex that she thinks is love it is being held by the one by a special someone. This tells a lot about how Olds views love, it shows that sex isn’t love to her maybe just holding hands or an occasion hug goes a lot farther.
The middle of the brain is called the limbic system which is responsible for our emotions, memories, and etc. We mammals have the only developed limbic system, and so we don 't have to rely on instincts to help us survive in life. The hippocampus which is located on each side of the brain helps us with our long term memory, and also to help us remember where things are. For example it 's help us remember where we put our keys. The amygdala is the part of our limbic system that helps us with our emotions. It also has one on each side, and paticulary is involved with our the emotions fear and aggression. For example if a women went through physical abuse she might be scared to be in a relationship again due to the fact she thinks it might easily happen again. Even if the new guy she is talking to has never hurt a fly. The hippocampus and amygdala work hand and hand when it comes to the pleasure center of the brain. The arousal by an over ride of electrical stimulation is caused by when a person uses an addictive drug like heroin. Really you don 't have to take drugs to stimulate the limbic system sex will also do the same. There are also reward circuits in our brain like when we get a good grade on our test or hear something really funny these circuits can be
During the 17th century, certain poets wrote poems with the specific purpose of persuading a woman to have sexual intercourse with them. Three of these seduction poems utilize several strategies to do this: Andrew Marvell’s “To His Coy Mistress,” and Donne’s “A Valediction: Forbidden Mourning” and “The Flea.” Some of the reasoning used by both poets is similar to the reasoning used today by men to convince women to have sexual intercourse with them. These gimmicks vary from poem to poem but coincide with modern day rationalization. The tactics used in 17th century seduction poems are relevant and similar to the seduction tactics used in the 21st century.
Looking at our past, there have been dramatic changes in the way humans view sex. Long before the 1900s individuals framed their views based on the religious institution. Due to the fact that they strongly centered their idea of sexual thought on religion, they believed that the only purpose of having sex was to procreate. As the 1920’s approached, there were various factors that changed the way individuals viewed sex. The “new women” known, as flappers were women who were confident in who they were. They changed their attire as well as their social attitude. In the 1920s, the flappers redefined sex; customs and traditions were broken and new norms were created by society.
The controversy of sex has lead to it being thought of as dangerous. In society there is the controversy of people having sex or having any sexual activity they are considered perverted and lecherous. Then there is the other side of the spectrum where someone who does not have sex at all is considered a prude. Both being lecherous or a prude is unacceptable in society. People feel that they must lie whether they have sex or not because of the word of what opinions will formulate against them. The reason people lie about their sexual experiences is so that that are not harshly judged, criticized, or labelled by society. People can be labelled as a slut, whore, prostitute, or a prude, but it does not mean that it is entirely true because some people do not fully understand some of the meanings behind these words and just use it as hurtful slang. Therefore, sex is more secretive than it should be. Either lie or truth a person will say, other people will make a strong, rude
In Sharon Olds poem Last Night we see passionate love unfolding in the speaker’s sexual experience. However, in Marvell’s To His Coy Mistress passionate love is what the speaker is asking his mistress to partake in. Where we see a frenzied tempo in Last Night, Marvell’s To His Coy Mistress starts by seducing his mistress in a patient and gentle manner with: “Had we but world enough, and time” (line 1). Marvell explicates that his mistress’ effected shyness wouldn’t be a crime if they had all of the time in the world and that they could do anything they like with that time: “This coyness, lady, were no crime / We would sit down, and think which way / To walk, and pass our long love’s day” (lines 2-4).
Poetry and Sex Since the beginning of human existence, there has been once practice, one instinct, one single obsession that we cannot escape. Some may call it necessary; others say it’s a gift. It can be controlling, enlightening but it’s oh so powerful.
Holloway explains that sexual intercourse involves with an ongoing relationship (Holloway 1984). Men are trying to get their sexual desires met will some females are looking for long term connections; they normally anticipate that the casual affair will last and develop into a relationship. Females are frequently frustrated, as the men neglect to keep the companionship or relationship going. Females are let down from the males because they accept more than he is willing to give. Men are just looking for sex while women are looking for a connection.
Have you ever thought, where did the concept of love and sex develop and evolve from? It is from the time of the Neanderthals that sexual status came into play. In the later world though it is very much different. Love and sex are more emotional and physical bonding of two people than it ever was before. At the same time however sex is just as much pleasure as it always was but the concept of love had arisen and made it more than just pleasure with multiple partners. Sexual intercourse had developed into something more. There was a whirlwind of emotions. For every culture, religion and part of the world though it was different. Even social class came into play as those in high societies believes and ways were much different than those in the lower classes. Europe, India and Japan during their medieval times had all developed their own sense and believes of what love and sex represented to them and their cultures. They all had their own preferences when it came to sex as well as having different ideas on how sex and love related to marriage within their culture and their society. Love and sex in these three areas was vastly different because of these cultural, spiritual, and social differences; each one of these three societies helped develop the concept of what love and sex are seen as in today’s world.
