Learning is the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through personal experience. It results in a relatively permanent change in behavior which psychology can explain in different ways by a variety of different approaches. For example, the cognitive approach argues that mental processes shape an individual’s behaviour, whereas the behavioural approach proposes that behaviour is simply nothing more than a product of past experience and personal circumstances. Through the continuous process of learning we end up perceiving our environment differently, leading to a change in the way we interpret incoming stimuli, and hence therefore determines the way we interact and behave (Heffner, 2016). There are two simple forms of learning. One form is habituation which diminishes an elicited response to a stimulus after repeated exposure. It is regarded as stimulus specific because the more you become familiar to a particular stimulus, the less likely you are to pay attention to it and therefore respond to it. However, as soon as a new stimulus is introduced, the previous habituated response will appear to quickly recover (Domjan, 2010). This learning process can be of two types; short term habituation which describes a temporary, immediate decline in response and long term habituation which accounts for more permanent and slower decline in response. The other simple form of learning is known as sensitisation which is a non-associative learning process and results in an increase in responsivity to an intense stimulus after repeated exposure. Habituation and sensitisation both result from repeated stimulation and therefore appear to compete with one another for control over behaviour (Domjan, 2010). The current research sought to investigate this concept further with a partial replication of the study conducted by Pavlov (1902). The purpose of the study was to primarily investigate whether the same concept of classical conditioning in animals can be applied to humans. It may have been the case that this type of learning process only occurs in non-human organisms and so therefore further study was needed to clarify the conditions. Our main hypothesis was that classical conditioning would still appear to occur in humans and would hence lead to an increase in salivation.
The study by Watson and Rayner was to further the research of Ivan Pavlov. Pavlov was a Russian physiologist whose most famous experiments involved that of animals, specifically the unconditioned and conditioned reflexes of canines, in reference to salivation and conditioned emotional response. Pavlov demonstrated that if a bell was rang each time a dog was fed; ultimately the animal would befall conditioned to salivate at just the sound of the bell, even where food is was no longer present (The Salivation reflex). Classical Conditioning was a phenomenon that a man named Ivan Pavlov explored in the twentieth-century. His work laid the foundation for many other psychologists such as John Watson. Pavlov’s idea came when he seized on an incidental observation. He noticed putting food in a dogs mouth caused salvation. However, the dog not only salivated to the food it began to also salivate to mere sight of the food, or the food dish. He began experimenting; first he slid the food presented the food by sliding the food bowl and blowing meat powder into the dogs mouth at the same exact moment. They paired it with a neutral stimuli event the dog could see but did not associate it with food (Myers, 2014, p.256). Food in the mouth automatically, unconditionally triggers the salivary reflex. Pavlov called drooling the unconditioned response and the food the unconditioned stimulus. Salvation in response to a tone is learned, it is conditioned upon the dogs associating the tone with the food it is called conditioned response (Myers, 2014, p.256). The stimulus that used to be neutral is the conditioned stimulus. I found it interesting and relating to everyday life because my dog often does the same. He discovered classical conditioning after seeing how the dogs were stimulated to respond to their food and anything related to food such as the noise of the door or person coming towards them (King, 2016). Learning in its most basic form is our minds associating one thing with another. Digging deeper reveals that there are trends in how human beings and animals learn by association, usually this is done by a brain connecting one event to another. The two different ways a brain tends to learn is through either classical conditioning or operant conditioning. Classical conditioning is learning to associate one stimulus with another stimulus, and Operant Conditioning is learning by associating a response or behavior with a consequence. Knowing how people and animals learn is an important piece of knowledge if one is to help benefit the greater good.

Behaviorists agree that an individual’s behaviors is a result of their interaction with the environment. Feedback, praise and rewards are all ways people can respond to becoming conditioned. The focus is on observable events instead of events that happen in one’s head.
