My organization deals in furniture making. The operations of my own organization include cutting wood, using flint paper, nailing, carving, designing, polishing and coloring, transportation and finally assembling.
Lean production system in applied in the normal manufacturing process and can be explained as follows.
a. Cutting wood:
Cutting of wood for making the skeleton of the furniture product is the first step in the manufacturing process. Therefore cutting of wood is done such that is become ready to be moved into actual process of making a furniture product. Polishing and Coloring:
Polishing and coloring is actually the last step in the production process when the wooden parts of furniture are either colored or polished as per the requirements. This way these wooden parts of furniture are made ready to be assembled in the later stage. The lean production system followed here is fair use of paint and polish, such that least wastage occurs and the maximum output is reached during the production process.
g. Transportation:
The transportation is made of the wooden accessories or parts that are selected by the customer for purchase. The lean production system is followed in transportation as the disassembled wooden parts are transported through company’s personal transport medium. Hence extra expenditures are saved from keeping inventory and supply of spare wooden parts in and adjustable to the customer home.
h. Assembling:
The final step is assembling where in the wooden parts are joined such that it takes the form of actual furniture product that the customer has bought. The lean production system is applied here when JIT technique is applied to assemble product only when it is sold out. In today’s operational management arena, there are certain expectations from a managerial aspect that must be met in order to be successful. A comprehensive look at the Space Age Furniture Company will show exactly what the Materials Requirement Planning (MRP) calculations are for this company at present time and then take the information given in order to properly suggest ways to improve the sub-assemblies. The basic premise for JIT is fairly simple: a company only produces an item when there is a need, or just-in-time for a company or individual to purchase it (Manoocherhi, 1988). The theory of JIT also accepts that there may be a need for an item at another work station and this would also create the need for production. Rather than utilizing the common practice of mass production and attempting to sell and distribute the products after they are created, JIT waits until there is a defined need that must be met. By doing this, JIT systems allow companies to decrease the level of production, decrease the necessary manpower hours utilized in mass production modes of supply, and eliminates the waste inherent in over-production. These techniques are especially effective for small companies, who are far less able to absorb the impact of unsold products. JIT has been shown to significantly impact reductions in overhead costs that reduce re-investments, and encourage stabilizing business practices(Manoocherhi, 1988).

It can also be thought of in terms of flow, which is how Toyota likes to think of it. It is simply a process of decision making where the problems tend to be thought of in terms of flow, reducing starts and stops or unnecessary motion increases flow, reducing waste.
