Leadership and Self-Deception
In the book, Leadership and Self-Deception, the author shows us how leadership is affected negatively by something called Self-Deception. Self-Deception is a concept where one blames everyone else for the problems that are going on, where you can only see things from your perspective, you see through these rose-colored glasses that you don’t know are on. In the book they use the example of Ignaz Semmelweis, he was a doctor in the mid-1800s in Austria who couldn’t figure out why so many patients in his ward were dying. He tried everything he could think of to change the situation. He set the standard regulations so that all the wards did everything the same way, still fatality rate in his ward was far higher than any other. Turns out that many of the doctors in his ward were doing research on dead bodies and then coming to examine live patients without washing their hands (hand washing and general hygiene things that we take for granted were not known of at this time). The only difference between his ward and the others was that more doctors partook of the research in his than from the others. Once he realized this he started having the doctors wash their hands before tending to the live patients, instantly the death rate dropped dramatically. The point here is that before Semmelweis finally came to this conclusion he couldn’t figure out what his problem was because of a lack of knowledge. This makes it exceedingly difficult to change, or want to change, it’s called being in the box. You have this problem, but you don’t know it, your trapped in this box where you’re blind to what is really going on around you.
In the case of Semmelweis his being in the box was a lack of technology more than anything else. What the book is really trying to address is how we treat coworkers, friends, family, random people, etc. To be in the box is when you view these people as objects, nuisances, or problems, not as people. When your needs and desires come before anyone elses, when you look at someone as something to be used to complete an objective, to boost your ego, something to be manipulated, something that needs to be fixed, then you are in the box.

It is not acceptable to modify or bend the rules of society. Society is civilized, and to be civilized there must be rules, regulations and policies that prevent. Individuality leads to a mess of chaos. To prevent disorder, institutions in society keep these rules strongly enforced. Man creates these institutions in order to provide convenience and stability in everyday life. Then instead of man running these institutions, the institutions begin to reverse the role of power and the institutions are running man. He is rendered helpless to what he has created. With the institution in power it has become smarter and stronger than man, working to destroy individuality with the invisible machine running smoothly. Positions of power and authority are given to some. The power changes those who it into an unfeeling, ruthless, cold machine. Also they become part of the institution, forgetting the real purpose of their jobs. Institutions force individuals to bend and mold the standard and give up freedom and individuality. Some individuals are unable to conform when their will to remain creative and self-reliant is too strong; they fight against the current that society and its institutions create. Beating the system is another thing; those who attempt to beat the system are often referred to as romantics because they do not focus on the reality of situations. The system cannot be beat. It seems like no matter what we try to do we are always exploited to bad leadership and bad outcomes of bad leadership. It could be just as bad as jack with his tribe, Or even worse with bloodthirsty people such as Robert. But we can never escape it. Percival was not adapting to the world, so he just broke down. We as a society need to find a middle ground in which we can have a good leader while adapting to the bad things that society shows us. If we go too far in power, we become different people. We become… less then what we were previously, If we try to contain leadership to absolutely 0. We become too innocent and become fearful of all that society truly is. We can’t really change society to shape it on our own, so we do it by adapting and trying to pave the way for future generations to come to an understanding of the world we live in now.
“Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting out of the Box” by The Arbinger Institute is about the culture of a company, Zagrum, and how the culture has contributed to it’s success. The concept that Zagrum relies on is ridding the company of “people problems” as a result from “being in the box”. This book has been very helpful and eyeopening to several things I have never thought of. Being in a servant leadership position I am very thankful for the opportunity to read this book and learn to apply this to my life. I will put this book on my read once a year shelf. Each area mentioned spoke to me and it was clearly understood the process, the story’s, the application. I was very pleased that Maxwell revised his book. He added more detailed explanations and almost all the different ways to apply it. He tells us about each law in a simple and understandable detail but doesn’t overwhelm me. To sum up, Dr. Stockmann, is not an ordinary man, because unlike many people, he fights for what he believes is right, even though this might lead to his destruction. Still, he has the characteristics a normal person has, both good and bad. He is naïve because he doesn’t think of the consequences of his discovery for him, his family and his town. Moreover, he is selfish for putting himself before his family, and moral, for standing up for the well-being of the people. Finally, one must remember Dr. Stockmann, as the man who is ‘committed to humanity, as a man who loves his fellow men’ (Roshwald 233), and as a man that nowadays societies need.
