Le Concert Spirituel, one of the top performers of Baroque music from the late 20th century, performed the first Late-Night BBC prom at the Royal Albert Hall … and this year’s Diamond Jubilee performance of Handel’s “Water Music” and the Music for the Royal Fireworks was particularly dazzling and elaborate. A number of Handel’s work is classified as classical music; therefore, an orchestra formed the basis of this performance by the Le Concert artists. They used a number of instruments to make the whole process quite enjoyable, including woodwind, string and brass instruments (Hunter, 2015). Renowned French conductor, Niquet, captured the attention of the audience as he dramatically made his dynamic moves and communicative gestures with many forward, backward and sideways movements. During the performance, the woodwind performers were on their feet with their instruments held high. (Hunter, 2015) The instruments used by these top-notch musicians were stylistic replicas of the ones originally used during Handel’s time. The concert provided order and a clear frame for novices of classical music. However, it was not easy to conclude whether the performers were exclusively musicians, vocalists or both. .

The concert was officially launched with the first piece of the “Water Music” suite which was a mix of horns and strings (Handel, 1886). Musically, the crescendo and the tuning were odd as both the horns and the trumpets were played in unison. The strings produced French tunes and linked with the soft solos from the conductor. Although the uniformity of the two sounds was marred by the bursting brass, it was still an intimate and festive atmosphere. From a musical perspective, the major elements such as tempo, dynamics, color and rhythm were all clearly audible during the performance by the Le Concert
In the first part of this recital the vivaldi, contained a string Quartet. After the first intermission, I looked down at the podium and noticed that the precussions were added which included the timpani, bass drum, tylophone, and cymbals. In this recital Nancy Menk was the conductor, Judith Von Houser was the soprano which played a high note, and Mary Nessinger was the Mezzo-soprano which played a slight softer note. This part of the concert was divided into four pieces. First there was the Magnificant by M. Haydn (the orchestra accompaniment was edited from the composer's manuscript by Mark Nabholz). This piece consisted of strings without violas, two french horns, and an organ.
One of the pieces the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra performed was Carnival Overture, op. 92, composed by Antonin Dvorak. The conductor at this concert was Christian Baldini and the main violinist was Shawyon Malek-Salehi. This piece was made in the Romantic era with an orchestra instrumentation. The genre for this piece is concert overture and has a sonata form in a similar formate to other sonata forms from the Romantic era, making it sound dramatic compared to the Classical era’s sonata era. The live performance was true to Dvorak’s original score, which took the traditional sonata form of the classical era and changed it to incorporate a common Romantic era sonata form. Although the live performance focused on the first violinist, it still maintained the dramatic atmosphere from the original piece by keeping the sonata form, rhythm, texture, and instrumentation.

The music that was performed was classical. The orchestra was standard and composed primarily of violins, violas, cellos, and basses, as well as a smaller amount of woodwinds including flutes and bassoons, in addition to some brass, including trumpets and horns. For Harold in Italy, they also had a solo violist, Rennie Regehr.

The event I attended was the Flint Symphony Orchestra on October 8, 2016. I have never attended a symphony before so I was excited to go, especially since I had invited my friend to attend with me. For this event, I was already informed by my teacher that the symphony will be formal so we needed to look the part since others will be dressed fancy. The two concerts that I chose to go see were Stanislaus State Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensembles & Combos Concert. These two concerts are both very similar yet different in their own ways. Each piece also has many attributes to contribute and it was fun being able to watch two very different genres.
The foremost difference between Aristotle and Hobbes, and in turn classical and modern political philosophies’, with regard to a good life and happiness is that of normative judgments about the good life. While Hobbes rejects normative judgments about the good life and discusses human actions without attributions of moral quality, Aristotle offers the exact opposite. In Ethics, Aristotle differentiates between good and evil actions along with what the best good, or summum bonum, for all humans while Hobbes approach argues that good and bad varies from one individual to another with good being the object of an individuals appetite or desire, and evil being an object of his hate and aversion. In addition, Aristotle makes it clear that individuals have an ultimate purpose—that of political animals—that they should strive to become through trial and error throughout their life. Hobbes on the other hand rejects the idea of life having an ultimate purpose, “for there is no such finis ultimus (utmost aim) nor summum bonum (greatest good) as is spoken of in the books of the old moral philosophers…Felicity is a continual progress of the desire, from one object to another, the attaining of the former being still but the way to the latter”. Hobbes defines felicity as the satisfaction of one’s passions as stated in Leviathan “continual success in obtaining those things which a man from time to time desireth, that is to say, continual prospering, is that men call felicity.
My final winter concert has come and gone quicker than I could have possibly imagined. It was certainly one I will never forget because it was my very first time performing in every band and choir group. It was a very stressful night but having it perfectly planned and having help from many of my fellow performers definitely made me feel a lot more at ease. This concert definitely had it’s ups and downs and there are somethings that I wish went a lot better. However in the end, I did enjoyed performing and gave it a lot of effort.
For this critique, I was fortunate enough to attend a jazz performance by Deborah Davis and Ben Rosenblum. Davis was the vocalist and Rosenblum was the pianist. This concert was part of a jazz concert series presented by Preservation New Jersey and the New Jersey Jazz Society. I enjoyed this performance because I was able to witness a professional pianist play up close in a relaxed setting. I was seated in the second pew of the sanctuary, directly in view of Rosenblum’s hands as he performed.

The Life of G.F. Handel George Frideric Handel was born on February 23rd, 1685 in Halle, Germany. Handel had a passion for music from the time he was capable of understanding it. His father Georg was a highly respected barber/surgeon (Cavendish, vol. 4, pg. 60), which did not believe in music as a career and wanted his son to study law. Georg thought a career in law would offer more prospects and stability (60). Handel’s father was so against having his son play music, he took all of his son’s instruments out of the house.

Professor Laurel Zucker played flute while Professor John Cozza played piano. Both them performance some songs from the popular musician of Paul Taffanel, Olivier Messiaen, Eric Ewazen, Germanie Tailleferre and Charels Griffes. My favorite part of the concert is the second part of their performance. They performed the song from Olivier Messiaen called “Le Merle Noir”. This song expresses the love of nature.
Jazz is a music genre that is very rich in culture which is why I decided to attend a Jazz concert. This was my first Jazz event I had ever been to. I went to see the band The Chairman and the Board. This was a blues swing band. Having been to other concerts, I was expecting something similar as far as atmosphere and crowd. I was proved very wrong as this concert defied all my expectations and was in a whole different field as far as life entertainment goes. The first thing I noticed right off the bat was the audience. The age range of this audience was mainly 40-70. I definitely felt like the odd man out when I was there. It did get me thinking though, why was this audience so much older? I looked into the era of when most of those people
