Every two minutes a person is injured in a drunk driving crash. Driving drunk is a selfish act because while putting oneself in danger, everyone else on the road is put into harm’s way. Drinking and driving is a choice, easily preventable in today’s world. With technology growing at an exponentially high rate the options are endless to get home; for example, taxis, lyft, and uber guarantee a safe trip home when a friend is unable to help. The issue most prevalent is whether or not first time DUI offenders should be imprisoned? The laws against drunk driving need to be altered. If the first time offender was locked up for the right amount of time, the man who was killed by repeat offenders could still be alive. Nobody is above the law when it comes to driving drunk, accidents happen often, and while it is still considered an accident driving drunk is a choice made by an individual nobody forces them to drive. Accordingly, when people are faced with imprisonment due to drunk driving, this may persuade others that driving while drunk is simply not worth it. On the other hand, people make mistakes and the first offenses of drunk driving should not require imprisonment. One-time offenders should not be confused as frequent offenders; a warning should be placed before they are put in a jail cell. In addition, after multiple crimes judges believe what the drivers needs is not jail time, but rather rehab or counseling before being sent off to prison. Drunk drivers need to be taught a lesson after their first offense, when drivers are given a warning after their first wrong doing and let back onto the road, the chances of it happening again are high and by then it could be too late for everyone involved to make a
