Lancelot and His Courtly Love
Medieval Romance stories consist of many interesting elements, such as courtly love and chivalry. Both of them play the important roles in the romance novel, and they are closely developed and linked to each other. The Article "Lancelot, or The Knight of cart" is definitely best evident which strongly and effectively presents these elements to readers.
Before we really get into courtly love and chivalry, one thing can’t be missed. Lancelot is always the weak one in this relationship. No matter Lancelot’s faithful devotion to their love, Guinevere, who constantly controls without recognizing his feeling, isn’t satisfied with what Lancelot has done, and conversely blame him,
“What? Were you not shamed by and frightened of the cart? By delaying for two steps you should showed your great unwillingness to mount. That, to tell the truth, is why I didn’t wish to see you or speak with you.” (Line 4490- 4495)
In this way, the Queen seems never to consider for her lover, no matter how serious conflict is in his mind, all she is concerned with Lancelot’s hesitation of two steps. Perhaps, the Queen takes Lancelot’s hesitation as insult to their love without recognizing the struggle between his honor and love. Even though this condition, Lancelot still take his beloved as first position among other things.
To sum up, the courtly love is blind and flexible, and this kind of love later drives Lancelot into the dark abyss; however, Lancelot is still devoted himself to his lover, no matter what he received.
