Review – From La La Land to a shining American dream: the return of musical movies La La Land is a musical movie of America in 2016. background of America is beneficial for the emergence of La La Land, which inspires me so much with its unique characteristics. La La Land is a musical romantic comedy-drama film made in 2016. It is both directed and written by Damien Chazelle. The major stars include Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, with Gosling as a jazz pianist and Stone as an aspiring actress.
Both of them feel frustrated during their ways of pursuing their dreams. They meet each and other and fall in love in Los Angeles when they are in the middle of dream pursuit. The title of this movie refers to the music, with the representation for being out of touch with reality. Actually, the existence of La La Land is a refutation of the sentiment that the musical movies are dying. The six Oscar winner strongly denies the point. The spirit is captured by Chazelle, who prefers the nostalgic mood for the musical movies. Within the golden days of musical movies, even a boy, a girl, a bench and a plum-colored sunrise are able to deliver their magic on impacting audiences. Indeed, La La Land has already impressed the audiences with the dancing and singing of Mia and Sebastian within the planetarium. This movie is deeply rooted within the American culture, with the two young people having their dreams, which are far from achievement at first sight. It is a celebration of the immense possibility of having and nurturing a dream deeply inside the hearts. The representation form of this musical movie is quite attractive. It uses the musical ways to express the emotions, which cannot be put in mere words but to be …show more content…
songs. Honestly speaking, La La Land deserves to emerge at this era, when Trump, a giant merchant is able to win the American president election.
It is the symbol of American dreams, telling the way that American people tend to pursue. It acts as a subtly astute examination of the American dream, especially under such an era when most people begin to wonder about American dream. The miserable results of the major two characters could be indicated from the set of the scenes, which are quite important for discussing and understanding the culture. But the spirit of them to achieve their dreams is always so inspiring for the audiences, although the affection of them finally leads to an end. It adopts the conventions of songs and dances to conduct the exploration the costs of pursuing the passions. The major two characters, Mia and Sebastian, played by Stone and Gosling respectively, act as two artists with efforts to achieve their dreams but without foreseen hope. Mia wants to be an actress while Sebastian wants to open his own jazz club by his talent of playing piano. However, within the reality, both of them feel frustrated. They finally meet each other and attract each other, becoming a couple and find spirit consolation. But the reality set them apart and give them respective success at their own
willing. The musical aspects vividly show the turbulence between the two characters and their own dreams, as well as their relationship. The scenes of their dancing are quite amazing and attractive, but those scenes indicate their ways of being lost in the reality. Faced with the pale reality, all they could complete is to put their hearts into the art. For me, it is quite impressive with the form of musical way to present this movie to the audiences. However, it is more appealing to me for this movie that the American dreams are within every tiny piece of mind of American people. Although it is a fictional story, the experience of Mia and Sebastian shows the spirit of Americans to pursue their dreams although with setbacks. Sometimes the problems and setbacks could be quite miserable. But the future could be achieved with the efforts paid. It is the American culture that stimulates people to pursue their dreams.
In conclusion, I liked this movie because it showed women of very different backgrounds coming together, accepting each other, and becoming close friends during a crisis moment. In reality of today’s society, I saw that women are jealous against each other instead of working together. This movie shows the joy of overcoming differences and forming bonds with diverse women. In a very simple term, the director reminds us of the unique book of life that we each have. The other message is how the older are separate from society, because of their limitations and age. The older ladies in this movie shows us and other older people how to bloom again, and relive. In this movie they share their life, their tales, and their lessons from the past with us to change our typical mentality about older people.
A new edition to the course lineup, this week's film classic, Sunset Boulevard. This film will focus on the culture and environment of the Hollywood studio system that produces the kind of motion pictures that the whole world recognizes as "Hollywood movies." There have been many movies from the silent era to the present that either glamorize or vilify the culture of Hollywood, typically focusing on the celebrities (both in front of and behind the camera) who populate the "dream factories" of Hollywood. But we cannot completely understand the culture of Hollywood unless we recognize that motion pictures are big business as well as entertainment, and that Hollywood necessarily includes both creative and commercial
The main characters in the film are voiced by Kenneth Branagh (Miguel), Kevin Kline (Tulio), Rosie Perez (Chel), Armand Asante (Tzekel-Kan), and Edward James Olmos (Chief). The film is about a pair of con-artists (Miguel and Tulio) who accidentally find themselves somewhere in South America after stowing away on one of Cortes’ many vessels. They find their way from a shipwrecked shore to the legendary city of gold (El Dorado) with a map they won in a game of dice. The quality of this film rivals that of a classic.
Mi Vida Loca means “my crazy life (as a girl).” The movie documents the phenomenon of female gangs in the early nineties in Los Angeles. It is written and directed by Allison Anders, who grew up in Los Angeles and went to UCLA. She uses personal experiences to help influence her story writing. In Echo Park, a group of young Mexican-Americans show what it means to live in the inner city. The film looks at gang lifestyle from a woman’s point of view to uncover relationships, conflicts, gang loyalty, and identity. The “homegirls” portray their female friendships through their daily lives of survival in Echo Park. It is a rough life with almost every “homegirl” having a baby by the time they are twenty-one and almost every “homeboy” being handicapped, killed, or in jail by the time they reach their early twenties. The girls try to become autonomous from the men in their lives by forming their own female gang. The gang culture of Mi Vida Loca reflects and constructs culturally understood gender roles.
When Jonathan Larson and his friend were talking, Larson was given the idea to create a musical based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La bohème. La bohéme is an opera about people in 1800s Paris struggling to find success and suffering from tuberculosis. Each character in Rent is loosely based on characters in Puccini’s La bohème. After structural editings, numerous readings, and focus group previews, the musical Rent opened on February 13, 1996 at the New York Theatre Workshop with a six-week sold out run. Rent follows a year in the lives of Mark Cohen, a struggling Jewish filmmaker, Roger Davis, the hopeful struggling musician with HIV, Mimi Márquez, the club dancer and a drug addict who has HIV, Tom Collins, a gay anarchist and college professor who suffers from AIDS, Angel, a transvestite who suffers from AIDS, Maureen Johnson, a lesbian performance artist, and Joanne Jefferson, the Ivy League lesbian lawyer who is in a relationship with Maureen, in East Village, New York City from Christmas Eve 1989 to Christmas Eve 1990. The protagonists in this musical are the six friends Mark, Roger, Tom, Angel, Maureen, and Joanne and their antagonist is the struggle to survive the hardships of AIDS, HIV, an...
To conclude, this film is very suitable for the ones who love piano or jazz. Although the film was about two-hour-long, it is not boring with the dramatic legend made by 1900. I believe people who love music would enjoy the film and appreciate the beautiful film scores.
believe the film is saying, and what effect music has had on projecting the films overall message.
This novel is a great novel to give an example on how reality is to people even the high class. Through the discussion of the passage, poem and scholarly article will show how the path towards the American Dream can turn into a negative or positive outcome in a person’s life.
This movie takes place in Los Angeles and is about racial conflicts within a group of people which occur in a series of events. Since there are a wide variety of characters in this movie, it can be confusing to the viewer. In the plot, Graham is an African-American detective whose younger brother is a criminal. His mother cares more about his brother than Graham and she wants Graham to bring his brother back home, which in turn hurts Graham. Graham?s partner Ria is a Hispanic woman who comes to find that her and Graham?s ethnicities conflict when she had sex with him. Rick is the Los Angeles district attorney who is also op...
To have a strong American Dream, there must be a fear of failure. In both works, failure is defined as losing manhood, and success is equated with being the “ideal male”. The American Dream becomes an extension of masculinity attained through material possessions, work ethic, and status. Manhood is represented by the determination, achievement, and accomplishment, which makes failure more threatening as it equates to the destruction of the individual rather than his goals. Fear is another motivation which turns the struggles for greatness very personal for the cast. The theme of the film is based on antiquated concept that males are supposed to protect and provide for women; therefore, failing to succeed becomes a threat to the male’s domestic
For this essay I will be looking at the work of Hans Zimmer to discuss how music in film engages the viewer and evokes emotion and pulls the viewer toward the film. Hans Zimmer is a German born music composer. Hans Zimmer’s love of music stems from his childhood when he learned how to play various instruments. Before Zimmer began composing music for films he was in a well-known band. The band was called The Buggles whom were famous for their song Video Killed the Radio Star. After the Buggles Zimmer played in other bands but never had another hit. As Zimmer has progressed as a film composer so has his list of nominations and awards. Zimmer has won 4 Grammy Awards and 2 Golden Globes and many more for his outstanding film scores. The reason I chose to write this essay on Zimmer was that his genres and music score are extremely versatile ranging from animations to comedy to dark thrillers. This is important to highlight as it shows Zimmer can create almost any atmosphere with his music whether it be sad or creating tension that all cause us to engage with the film. Zimmer's use of themes and introduction of different instruments allowed him to create these wonderful engaging film score. In this essay I will look at three films by Hans Zimmer these are The Holiday Rush and Rain Man.
The CD hit number one on Billboard charts almost immediately. This album reminds me of my childhood because I watched the movie over and over. All of the songs have a magical feeling to them. The orchestra in the background of the songs is absolutely beautiful. Some of the songs are just the orchestra and it's amazing that you can tell exactly what emotion is happening in the movie without seeing it. I love every track but my favorites are “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo” by Walt Disney Records and “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” by Walt Disney Records which are both Disney
Each character in the novel has their own interpretation of the ‘American Dream – the pursuit of happiness’ as they all lack happiness due to the careless nature of American society during the Jazz Age. The American Dreams seems almost non-existent to those whom haven’t already achieved it.
In this essay the following will be discussed; the change from the age of classical Hollywood film making to the new Hollywood era, the influence of European film making in American films from Martin Scorsese and how the film Taxi Driver shows the innovative and fresh techniques of this ‘New Hollywood Cinema’.
Moana (2016) is visually breathtaking film with a magnificent storyline as well. It keeps with traditional Disney warmth while creating a whole new feel. The music is gorgeous and unlike any other film. The film even incorporates multiple visual styles throughout without losing continuity. This much anticipate film definitely lived up to its expectations. The characters are strongly portrayed and lovable. There is an individuality to each of them. And the theme rings clear throughout the film: remember who you are. It is instilled into every part and expressed with great emotion. Through brilliant use of linear narrative, design, and sound and music, the theme is clear to all who watch.
