Problem Statement & Introduction
One of the major problems in healthcare today is the ineffective communication among hospital personnel, patients and their families, and the effect it has on patient safety. Communication, as a whole, is very complex and is the root of teamwork and collaboration which aids in keeping patients safe in the hospital. Throughout the healthcare field today patient-centered care and patient safety seem to be major focus points. Unfortunately, ineffective communication can potentially cause patient harm and even death. The breech in ineffective communication between hospital staff and family was clearly portrayed in the story of Lewis Blackman. The lack of both communication, not just verbally but through documentation as well, and interdisciplinary collaboration were major factors that lead to the death of Lewis. Educational programs based on positive communication techniques that enhance collaboration, satisfaction within the hierarchy of the healthcare system, and patient-centered care should be implemented to ensure the safety of patients today.
Background Information
Lewis Blackman was a 15 year old boy born with a congenital chest deformity known as pectus- excavatum (Haskell, 2009). Doctors informed Lewis and his family about a new minimally invasive procedure that could fix his condition. Lewis and his family decided to have elective surgery which unfortunately resulted in many complications which led to his death. Summary and Conclusion
The importance of effective communication is clearly portrayed throughout the three themes discussed in this paper; collaboration, overall satisfaction, and patient-centered care. Without proper communication skills these three constructs can not properly function. When collaboration is utilized it not only improves patient-centered care but it improves overall satisfaction of staff and patients as well. These combined improve one of the major concepts in healthcare today, which is safety.

Process Excellence in the emergency department is a team collaboration that has a focus of interest for improving quality of care for patients. This particular “multidisciplinary” (Finkelman, 2012, p. 336) team meeting was a collaboration of team members that included: the Emergency Room (ER) Director, ER physicians, and ER nurses, ER Head Health Unit Coordinator, ER Business Manager, Senior Process Excellence Coordinator, Director of Information Management, and the Senior Marketing Specialist. This team’s purpose aims to organize a team approach to care for patients treated in the emergency department and focuses on the care approach that provides continuity of care to patients. This focus on the patient is aimed to provide not only a higher level of patient satisfaction, but also to improve professional satisfaction by developing approach by emergency room staff to provide care as team collaboration. This process excellence team has been meeting for over two years in hopes of this goal being reached. This paper aims to help the reader gain a better understanding of this specific team collaboration, the roles of its members, and the communication methods utilized.

Many barriers prevent effective communication within inter-professional teams. Lack of communication within MDTs presents challenges to their success, leading to numerous consequences, including the failure of the MDT (London Deanery, 2012; Sargeant et al, 2008). Communication between professionals is the key factor underpinning the potential success or failure of inter-professional teams, the outcome of the functioning of MDTs will either benefit or impair care of patients.

Communication encompasses a wide range of processes such as the exchange of information, listening, posing of questions (Fleischer et al., 2009) or use of body language. In a healthcare environment where there are constant interactions among nurses, doctors, patients and other health professionals, professional and effective communication is important in ensuring high quality healthcare standards and meeting the individual needs of patients.
The more health care professionals collaborate, the more knowledge is used, and patient safety can be maintained. Communication is related to interprofessional collaboration, because health care professionals collaborate with each other about the patient through communicating with each other. “Collaboration among nurses, physicians, and other members of the care team can improve the outcomes of care for patients” (Engel & Prentice, 2013; IOM, 2010).

Treating the patient and family as one, can have improved outcomes, decrease hospital stays, increased patient satisfaction, and improved reimbursements for the hospital. Developing a relationship with not only the patient, but family as well, can pay off in the long run by providing better communication, better quality of care, and trust. The patient and family can be strong advocates for improved performance improvement efforts. Including family in the treatment of the patient treats the “whole” patient through their hospitalization.
