The lack of electives at SWEC is clearly upsetting in addition to being inequitable to the students. Students are required to drive in information constantly, without the opportunity to take short breaks. Students have no access to a creative outlet, to release stress, in addition to the freedom of self expression themselves in a creative, productive way, that involves the students more than the teachers. Students are forced to sit through three 96 minute class periods weekly, excluding Fridays, in which the periods are cut in half. We should therefore, as students, come together, and start a revolution, to gain back what should rightfully be ours, electives.

In my own personal experience, classes are long, and can tend to wind down to be boring. Despite teachers trying their best to liven up the class, behavioral issues and exasperated teachers are still a result. As a student who hasn’t experienced electives at SWEC, it would help benefit both students and teachers.
Adding electives to students everyday curriculum at SWEC, will not only reduce class time, but will help decrease the level of drop outs, and will assist students with a more relaxing period. Mandela’s says that education is very powerful, you can use education to change the world or your life. This means that education is important in life and we all need a good education to succeed in life. In our society education is failing because schools demand too much for a great career. For example, schools take too much time to graduate and after we finish school there is no guaranteed employment. From the beginning of high school, students strap on their seatbelts and prepare for one of the most vigorous races of their lives – becoming successful. With the rare occurrence of a break, kids are expected to keep on driving as fast and as powerfully as they can in order to get into a “great” college, which would be followed by graduate school and then an actual job that would make a lot of money. In American society, common values include working hard, determination, and being so productive that free time is not even a question. However, this philosophy is taking a major toll on American college and high school students. For at least 40 years, America’s future has been steadily growing unmotivated, tired, and hopeless due to the overemphasis on performing well in school. This phenomenon is appropriately expounded in William Zinsser’s “College Pressures”, which takes a look at the top four sources of tension that cause these feelings of dejection and agitation. After reading this article, I came up with a few solutions to this national problem. It is time to switch the harsh, over-encouraging green light of education to a comfortable yellow one. In order to make this ideal transition, directors of education across the country need to primarily reduce the amount of out-of-class assignments, lighten the grading system, and incorporate days in the school year that allow students to express their thoughts about school and provide useful feedback.

Within recent decades, college has become a more easily available path than it has been for the past generations. In a current news release, The Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that, “Of the 2.9 million youth age 16 to 24 who graduated from high school between January and October 2014, about 68.4 percent were enrolled in college in October” (BLS Economic News Release from April 2015). When a student graduates high school, most of them intend to continue on to college. They have the idea that, while there, they can break away from all the general classes and just focus on what they want to learn. However, for almost all students, they find that this is not the reality. Just like high school, they find that they have to take approximately two years in general studies in order to attend and graduate with the major of their choice. General education classes should not be required because a majority of the information learned has already been covered in past years. Most of the courses do not benefit a student 's major, and the total amount of required hours for these classes can become a big waste of time and money.
Students go to college in search of knowledge, a new lifestyle, and the hope of a job after graduation. For many young adults, college is a rite of passage into an independent, mature new lifestyle. Not only is higher education a rite of passage, for some, it is also an opportunity to have a better life. Overall, college is a wonderful part of many people’s lives, yet the way the college education system is conducted wastes students time and money. College is basically composed of two parts: general education classes and major specific classes. General education courses are the source of wasted time and money, and should not be required of students. A few of the problems associated with general education classes are that they are basically a repeat of high school, unfortunately they can be the demise of students, they are costly, and they waste time.

In conclusion, the core curriculum is vital to life of any student, yet with more personal choice and freedom, the high school environment can be strengthened and improved . Having a more balanced high school curriculum, with more options for the students, would also allow students to narrow their focus on a particular field or subject, while preparing them for their major in college. It would even boost the confidence of the student body, and therefore boost the Test scores as well. In addition, students who have trouble recognizing their talents, might be able to have a more fulfilling high school experience. The purpose of school is to prepare one for the future and ones occupation; it is certain, that having a more elective-based high school program would do just that.
Every student is going to be different, and I will without a doubt have more than a few extroverts in my classes. Which is something that I will have to consider when making lesson plans. Besides that the most influential part of this course was the Faubion observations. Although I do not want to teach elementary school level classes I learned a lot through them. Espessially during my second observation where I learned about IEP’s, and how schools implement them. I realized that I will have to manage a classroom where not every student is going to want to learn, but it is going to be my job to make them want to. The discipline, commitment, and responsibility standards that are required for an exceptional learning experience in school systems today are very consistent with those necessary fifty years ago. For example, the tools an educator were provided then were utilized to the best of his or her ability, which can easily be comparable with the circumstances of today’s uprising culture of computers.
With the education system progressively getting tougher and the work force getting more competitive, students and educators are under pressure to do their best in every job that they do. Educators do their best at teaching what the students need and students take what is useful for their futures. Electives allow for helpful aspects in a student’s life in learning outside of the core curriculum but “if the light by which we are guided is ever extinguished, it will dwindle by degrees and expire of itself”, making the thoughts of students dull and not vibrant. “ By dint of close adherence to more applications, principles would be lost sight of, and when the principles were wholly forgotten, the methods could no longer be invented and men would continue without intelligence and without art to apply scientific processes no longer understood”, as said by Alexis de Tocqueville elaborates on the need of having classes outside the core to have outside learning. Some people and students do not feel as though electives within college are useful and beneficial for their future careers or worth their time and money. However, students should take elective courses, because these courses bring many favorable factors for students such as helping develop a well-rounded student and aiding in choosing what career path a student may want to pursue.
Going to school and getting a great education is important for a successful future in today’s world. Years ago, many children did not go to school and many young adults opted to work instead of attending college. In today’s society, gaining a high level of education is almost always mandatory for many jobs. There are many changes being done to the education system along with new items and ways of teaching in the classroom. There is a growing amount of changes in the classroom such as technology, teaching time, teaching styles, and freedom of space.
In an age of rapid change due to so many technology and innovative advances, a revolutionary change in the educational system is as vital as what our next energy source is. Education is the most powerful wealth in the world and it demands more attention, and where better to start with than out youth. The school system will soon go out of date due to the information highway and information availability if there isn?t a dramatic change in the way things are run in our domestic institutional facilities. The reason why college was such a success in the 20th century was because books were all of a sudden available to students on university campus. Now with internet, a student could specialize their profession solely with the computer with the click of a button. Something needs to be done to smoothen the rigid gaps and cracks in the school system before the technological pace at which we are advancing decides to bring the whole thing down.

Dropouts in school have been an important topic in education since the number of students that are dropping out has been increasing over the years. There is more than one reason students decide to leave school before graduating from high school. In the Gate Foundation report, they do a survey to investigate the main reasons of why students of age 16-25 years old drop out of high school. According to the Gate Foundation report, they are five main reasons why students are dropping out of school. Almost half of the students in the survey responded that one of the major reasons of dropping out of high school was because classes were not interesting or boring. It is true that if a person does not feel interested of learning something, then it can
