During the situation of an issue, the labor union makes the negotiation process much easier for both the employee and the employer. As an employer facing the issue, it is easier to deal with the labor union since it simplifies the negotiations process and avoids facing multiple employees. For an employee on the other hand, the union represents the voice of the employee, which allows for higher employee satisfaction. In addition, there have been many incidents in the past where the union has found the solution to issues that could have otherwise taken a much longer time to solve. Moreover, another advantage of labor unions for organizations or employers is that they lead to less turnover. This means that with labor union, the employer is off to making better profit since the employees, who are members of the union, would not want to leave their positions. The reason for this is because the employees would have to pay dues regularly to be part of the union, and giving up the position means losing the money, which they would not want. Meanwhile, if the employee is not a member of the labor union, there are much higher chances of them giving up the position. This might sound as common knowledge as it is one of the key responsibilities of a union. However, to this day, many individuals, especially those who are considered as minorities, face issues when it comes to being hired at an organization. Unionized workplaces give higher compensations with relatively higher wages for lower paid workers and less wage gap for women, young workers and racialized workers. For example, according to the Canadian Labor Congress, there were 2,425,000 women union members working across Canada in 2013 – about 32.6% of women employees and they earned, on average, $6.89/hour more than non-union women because their unions negotiated fair wages and work hours. The $6.89/hour is a great difference when taken into consideration and it shows the real advantage of being a union member. The union therefore ensures that the employee is entitled to fair wages and a safe environment. In addition, the Social Justice Principles on work suggests that if the dignity of work is not protected, then the basic rights of workers – the right to productive work and the right to decent and fair wages – must be respected. Moreover, having a union ensures that the economy serves the people. Even though the very purpose of a union is to defend the interest of its members, the company could also use the instrument to promote the official point of views of the company’s management. In clear, the union and the management could work in good intelligence to promote the interest of worker and the interest of the company. Generally, the problem between management and union come when they one as another as an adversary and not as a partner. To be more constructive and create a working atmosphere profitable for both parties, union and company’s management need to work side by side to address real problems. Thus, worker must understand that the best job security for them comes primarily from the existence of the company and so their union should not be a mean for jeopardizing the company’s purposes. Similarly, the management must also understand that he will not achieve his annual goals unless the workers are well treated and the condition of work meet the standards set by official rules and regulations. There are trade unions, which represent workers who do a particular type of job, and industrial unions, which represent workers in a particular industry. The American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) is a trade union, while the United Auto Workers (UAW) is an industrial union.
Unions are voluntary associations joined by workers. The Combination Act of 1800, which hindered the growth of unions, states that every workman's goal, who are entering into any combination should not be obtaining an advance of wages, or to lessen or alter the hours, or influencing any other to quit his work. Any workman who did so shall be committed to jail (Doc 1). Although the Combination Act of 1800 prevented the growth of unions, Ralph Chaplin believes that a worker should join the union. He states that there can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun, but the unions, which makes it strong (Doc 2). Since there's so many workers working in bad conditions, the labor laws came to action.

Labor unions have been in America for a very long time. There are many unions in a myriad of different fields. Labor unions were and are used to allow for equal treatment of workers. Employers always want to maximize their profits and they try to give the least to get the most in return. For reasons such as this is why unions were formed. Generally a union boss is appointed or hired to protect the rights and privileges of the employees. The union boss is generally very representative of the demographics of the workers. The leader of the employees needs to know what they want and what is fair for them and this is why he tends to represent one type of work force, such as the teachers union. This type of representation is made easier when most of the workers come from the same background. Background meaning family size, education, race, etc. Labor unions have helped shape the American work force, as have the backgrounds of the men and women who have worked in them. America was founded on diversity and the freedom to choose. Many different backgrounds have found their way into America and labor unions. As stated earlier, labor unions have people of the same background in them. America’s first settlers were generally of the same background and because of that, so were the members of the first labor unions. As the United States expanded so did the work force and the diversity in it. Diversity and understanding the challenges and benefits is what enables America to be great. In the pages of this paper we are going to look at the change in the make-up of labor unions by the entrance of African-Americans and how they have influenced America and the labor unions for the better. Labor unions were established as a way for workers’ needs and grievances to be heard by management. According to Fossum (2012), “forming a union creates a collective voice to influence change at work” (p. 7). The collective voice of workers in a union holds much more power than any single employee’s voice. It can loudly draw attention to mistreatment or abuse of workers. The organized collective voice of workers demands to be treated in a fair way by its management in terms of wages, hours, benefits, and working conditions.
The disadvantages of union membership are viewed from the employee and employer perspective. Through the employee lens, the disadvantages manifest in the form of fees, loss of autonomy, and less collaborative work environment. As part of the union, you surrender many of your individual rights in exchange for the organized results that can potentially manifest through the collective bargaining process. Therefore, there isn’t any assurance that your individual concern will even be addressed.
Throughout American history, labor unions have served to facilitate mediation between workers and employers. Workers seek to negotiate with employers for more control over their labor and its fruits. “A labor union can best be defined as an organization that exists for the purpose of representing its members to their employers regarding wages and terms and conditions of employment” (Hunter). Labor unions’ principal objectives are to increase wages, shorten work days, achieve greater benefits, and improve working conditions. Despite these goals, the early years of union formation were characterized by difficulties (Hunter).
If an employee believes that the union is loyal to working for and spending the fees collected to better the employee’s wages and benefits the employee would be more likely to be loyal to the union and more willing to pay the dues. The decline of union workers is helping to create more right to work states, and those that are right to works states actually have been shown to have more competitive wages and more personal income economic growth rates. (Right to Work: Pros and Cons:, 2015) In right to work state the wages are actually less than a non-right to work state but there are more employed workers.
Introduction In Canada, within the numerous jurisdictions, the complexity and variability of labour law concerning collective bargaining rights reflects the needs of all parties to maintain bargaining power, and for society to maintain industrial peace. Under provincial labour relations legislation, employees, unions, and employers each have specific rights and duties when industrial disputes arise. These statutorily protected rights and duties, and the freedom to exercise or fulfil them unimpeded, are of great significance when a lockout or strike occurs because the timely use of economic sanctions is an integral component of the collective bargaining process.
