Mexican Americans that live in the United States today, have a long history of struggles and pain. There was a massive movement that many people did not know existed during the 1960’s. Most people knew about the civil right movement that lead by the leaders Malcolm X and Marten Luther King, but many had not realized that another movement was in full swing, the Chicano movement. The Chicano movement fought hard not only for equal rights, but also to keep their culture alive by having Chicano strides classes and keeping it in the classrooms..
Brief Summary of Film
The film "La Raza de Colorado- La Historia part 2” was aired on September 27, 2010 by Rocky Mountain PBS. The film goes over the Chicano movement in the 1960, and like the other civil rights movement that was going on, there were two schools of thoughts to it. The first one was the thought “A tooth for a tooth” lead by Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales. Corky followed more of the teaching of Malcolm X and believed that “If someone hits you on the head, hit them back” (La Raza 2010) and believed that was the best way to get people’s attention and that the people suffering from injustice will no longer lay down and take the abuse. This is when the movement turned to boycotting anything they oppressed them, from things such as grapes picked by non-unitized workers to Coolers beer and Taco Bell. In the video, they also mentioned that many Chicanos were encouraged to start there own business and spend at a local family owned business. In 1968, women that were part of the National Floral Workers Organization had gone on strike and after 8 mounts of strikes, decided to end it when they chained themselves to there fence to the factory that packaged flowers, blocking others from getting in. These women were met with police dumping tear gas on the women trying to get them to unchain
