Stage 1: Identity Confusion
This is the "Who am I?" stage associated with the feeling that one is different from their peers This stage also is characterized by a growing sense of personal alienation. The person begins to be conscious of same-sex feelings or behaviors and to label them as such. It is rare at this stage for the person to disclose inner turmoil to others (website).
In terms of career counseling, a person in this stage may start to look at careers that are outside of their comfort zone. A LGBT person may start to take note of careers that are outside of their tradition gender rolls. For example, a lesbian identified person may have some interest in career in construction or in a trade that may me male dominated. I think the main point to take note about this phase is that is seems to be very internal. The LGBT identified person is really just coming to grips with who they are.
Stage 2: Identity Comparison
This is the rationalization or bargaining stage where the person thinks, "I may be a homosexual, but then again I may be bisexual," "Maybe this is just temporary," or, "My feelings of attraction are simply for just one other person of my own sex and this is a special case." There is a heightened sense of not belonging anywhere with the corresponding feeling that "I am the only one in the world like this." (website).
In terms of career counseling, I think this stage is kind of like the rational phase. A LGBT identified person may start searching for careers that our outside of the standard they me accustom to. However, it seems that a LGBT person may assess how they would fit into a traditional career. ... on. I feel the person is ready to fully incorporate their expertise into their work. It is at this stage a LGBT identified person can take their drive for new challenges started in stage 5 and embark on new and exiting career and life paths.
Conclusion
I think it is a good idea to take note of the identity crisis a LGBT may be going through, in terms of their career. I would say from counselor standpoint by helping the client provide perspective. As well, it gives the client hope of a ultimate fruitful career. As well, I feel that by keeping these stages in mind will help the client take that hope and create a narrative for a career that will truly fit them symbiotically with their values, goals and needs.

Mistrust stage occurs at infancy and at this stage, Infants learn to trust others depending on the response of their caregivers who are usually parents. The Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt occurs between the ages of 18 months and three during which time children begin to emphasize their independence. This is done by exploring the world around them. Erikson, E. H. (1993). The Initiative vs. Guilt stage generally, occurs between the age three and five and at this time children assert themselves more frequently and are particularly lively. Industry versus inferiority stage occurs between the ages of five and twelve. As children grow in independence, they become increasingly aware of themselves as individuals. Erikson, E. H. (1993). The identity vs. role confusion stage, occurs during adolescence, between the ages of 12 and 18 years. At this stage the adolescents undergo an identity crisis during which they must establish an identity, goals, and a purpose. Erikson, E. H. (1994). The Intimacy vs. Isolation stage occurs in young adulthood ages 18 to 40 years. During this time the young adult begins to share themselves more intimately with others and explores significant relationships with others especially in marriage. The seventh stage is Generativity vs. Stagnation and occurs during middle adulthood, ages 40 to 65 yrs. Andrew Sullivan, author of, What is a Homosexual, portrays his experience growing up; trapped in his own identity. He paints a detailed portrait of the hardships caused by being homosexual. He explains the struggle of self-concealment, and how doing so is vital for social acceptation. The ability to hide one’s true feelings make it easier to be “invisible” as Sullivan puts it. “The experience of growing up profoundly different in emotional and psychological makeup inevitably alters a person’s self-perception.”(Sullivan)This statement marks one of the many reasons for this concealment. The main idea of this passage is to reflect on those hardships, and too understand true self-conscious difference. Being different can cause identity problems, especially in adolescents.
"Coming out of the closet" is an essential for homosexuals to develop their personal identity. Coming out of the closet is a figure of speech for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people's to tell others about their homosexuality or bisexuality where previously this had been kept secret. Framed and debated as a privacy issue, coming out of the closet is described and experienced variously as a psychological process or journey; decision-making or risk-taking (Wikipedia).

For years homosexuality in the United States of America has been looked down upon by citizens, religions, and even politicians. The homosexual culture, or the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender), has been demoralized and stuck out and lashed against by the Heterosexual community time and time again. To better understand the LGBT community we must first grasp the concept of Sexual Orientation.
As a student who is graduating in three weeks, I am excited to start advocating for the population in which I choose. At this point I choose to work in foster care and adoption, so I will be advocating anyway I can for that population because that is my job. I could potentially be working with a same-sex couple who wants to foster or adopt, and I will be doing my best do advocate on their behalf so they can do so. I work in a faith-based organization so I am prepared to fight for them. If you choose to be a person who could potentially be working with an LGBT person, you must be prepared to advocate and work with that person.

Countless organizations are available with the purpose of serving LGBT people who may be suffering, physically, mentally, or emotionally. One of the many goals of the LGBT community is to celebrate individuality, diversity, and sexuality. The LGBT does serve these needs, as it provides a place where gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people can be apologetically themselves.
It is the stage where an adolescent re-examines their identity. To be precise, the individual tries to find out exactly who they are. According to Erikson, there are two identities involved in this stage. They are; the occupational and the sexual (McLeod, 2017). The adolescent may be uncomfortable with their looks or body, but with time they adapt to the bodily changes. The experiences of this stage result in the virtue of fidelity. The meaning of fidelity is one’s ability to commit their self to others by accepting other people despite their ideologies being different (McLeod, 2017). In this stage, the person explores the possibilities and starts to form their own identity basing upon the outcomes from their explorations. However, a failure to determine a sense of identity in a society does lead to role confusion (Kroger & Marcia, 2011). The adolescent has not established what they want to be when they grow up. Specifically, role confusion entails a person, not sure about their place in society or even themselves. While responding to the role confusion, the adolescent starts to experiment with various lifestyles such as education, work, and other activities. In order to discuss the biology of gender identity and sexual orientation, it is necessary to first examine the differences between multiple definitions that are often mistakenly interchanged: sex, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Sexual orientation is defined by LeVay (2011) as “the trait that predisposes us to experience sexual attraction to people of the same sex as ourselves, to persons of the other sex, or to both sexes” (p. 1). The typical categories of sexual orientation are homosexual, heterosexual and bisexual. Vrangalova and Savin-Williams (2012) found that most people identify as heterosexual, but there are also groups of people that identify as mostly heterosexual and mostly gay within the three traditional categories (p. 89). So by the end of stage five the young adult should start to understand themselves and have better feelings of who they are. These are the times you will see peoples images changing commonly associated with high school students as they grow through the grades. Some young adults may feel uncomfortable in their newly changed body until they can adapt to the changes they made. Once they have adapted and grown into their changes they have became successful in stage five, which leads to the virtue of fidelity.
