Getting an education is essential to becoming a good social worker. Social workers need cultural competency in working with every type of population including people of different ethnicities, race, gender, sexually identity, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. We also need enough education in order to advocate and be comfortable advocating for our clients. Our LGBT clients go through obstacles that straight people will never have to go to such as fighting for the right to marry, getting picked on in school and trying to prove to people that their sexual orientation is a real thing. The following paragraphs include how articles about the lack of social work education have affected my views about my education and my career.
While the gay rights movement has been around for some time, the things that they fight for is forever changing. Currently it is fighting for the right to marry, and receive all the rights straight people get when they marry. Married privilege is like white privilege; married people have more rights then non-married people, no matter what sex a person is married to. These benefits include insurance coverage’s under a spouse policy, social security benefit inheritance, receiving pension and personal assets without taxation, visitation rights at the hospital without question and making health care decisions (LaSala, 2007). In addition to all that, there is a social benefit to being married; it represents a healthy, developed and normal relationship (LaSala, 2007). Before reading this article, I never thought about why married people are given all of these rights. I never thought about where they came from, who made them up, or why they were even made. ...g for the rights of people who are discriminated against should be one of our main objectives. As a school counselor, your job is to advocate for any student that walks into your office, no matter if they are gay, straight, black, or white.
As a student who is graduating in three weeks, I am excited to start advocating for the population in which I choose. At this point I choose to work in foster care and adoption, so I will be advocating anyway I can for that population because that is my job. I could potentially be working with a same-sex couple who wants to foster or adopt, and I will be doing my best do advocate on their behalf so they can do so. I work in a faith-based organization so I am prepared to fight for them. If you choose to be a person who could potentially be working with an LGBT person, you must be prepared to advocate and work with that person.
