The LGBT, an abbreviation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, is a term popularly used to refer to the community of people with a non heterosexual sexuality, the term has been used since the 1990’s as the community was referred to as just the ‘gay community’ leaving many feeling unrepresented. Over the years there has been much debate about who is included within the LBGT including many changes such as the inclusion of the letter Q which would stand for Queer, a word itself that has been through many changes over the years from originally meaning something strange or odd, which was then used against homosexual people in order to abuse and discriminate, since then the LGBT community have tried and for the most part succeeded in reclaiming …show more content…

Although, there are many people who play with their genders, for themselves, for others and even for a career, some of these being most popularly known as drag queens or gender illusionists. A drag queen or drag artist is the name given to men who perform dressed as women, they are comfortable being and living as men and being in drag is just for fun or work, they take on a new persona commonly giving themselves new names, most of the time unusual but occasionally common or average female names. Drag can come in many forms, such as, the over the top and sometimes goofy drag, where the wearer can be seen as male and not trying the hide that they are, much like what would be seen in a pantomime, this type of drag is much common in the United Kingdom. Some drag queens create characters with their own personalties, quirks and dress sense or style, which can and most of the time are very different to their own personal self, this can also be how they believe they would express themselves if they were actually women. Another, very popular, form of drag is that which is commonly referred to as pageant queen, this is where the wearers are inspired by and choose to dress like they were in a beauty pageant, this type of drag is larger in America where beauty pageants are most common, this drag can be more polished and feminine than the goofy, pantomime drag style. There is also the type of drag who are more gender illusionist than drag queen, this is when the male looks more like an actual female rather than dressed up male, using make up and sometimes technical techniques along with specially made costumes and clothing, it is easy to pass as whichever gender they would please.
