Varanus komodoensis live in in islands near the Indonesia archipelago. The komodo dragon was not known to the world until the First World War. The komodo dragon id actualy a species of monitor lizard that has been evolving in the islands that are isolated for millions of years, which has led to it becoming very large. The dragon is not the only large species of lizards in the world, but it is also one of the most aggressive and is so powerful that it is able to take prey many times it’s own size. The komodo dragon is a carnivorous animal. They only hunt and kill large animals in order to survive in it’s natural habitat. Adult dragons are bae to to kill prey much larger then themselves. Young dragons prey on smaller animals in the trees like

Many people often see little similarity between the country of Japan and Europe. However, there are actually several similarities between these two countries. In fact, Reischauer and Jansen note that Feudal Japan had departed so far from East Asian norms that it was more similar to medieval Europe than it was to China. Thus, the knight of Europe and the samurai of Japan despite a lack of contact with one another shared several common elements. This was a result of many similarities social and cultural influences experienced by the two distant countries.
The Yanomamo are a tribe of twenty thousand who live in about two hundred and fifty widely dispersed villages in Brazil and Venezuela. It was first thought that the Yanomamo were a group of hunter-gatherers, but contrary to that thought they actually cultivate their own crops for food. They also hunt and forage, but only as needed.
Ko-kee, ko-kee... are the mating calls of invasive Coqui frogs who have invaded a majority of the Big Island. These Coqui frogs, also known as Eleutherodactylus coqui are native in Puerto Rico and these small frogs are considered their national animal (Singer et al). Coqui frogs were accidentally introduced to Hawaii during a shipment of plants from Puerto Rico to Hawaii in the late 1980's. Coqui frogs are about 2 inches in length and are usually light brown or gray with a stripe down their back. Over the past two decades E. coqui have spread to the four main Hawaiian Islands and other places such as the Caribbean, Florida, and Louisiana (Singer et al). As of today, the Coquis intensive mating calls can be heard throughout every part of the Big Island during the night. While the Puerto Ricans love the sound of the Coquis, many locals in Hawaii dislike them due to the environmental and economic damages they are creating. Coqui frogs are detriment to Hawaii because they are a serious threat to the native insect population, compete for food with Hawaii's native bird population, and cost residents and businesses millions of dollars each year (McAvoy).
Since the 1930's, plastic pink flamingos have been a trendy statement piece at hotels and in yards across the country. Jennifer Price, the author of "The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History", uses tone, satire, and diction to show her view on United States culture. Price's view is that United States culture is flashy, cocky, and that Americans tend to try and stand out to get attention.
In the play Chushingura, retainers have the highest respect for their masters. Retainers in this play will fight to the death to honor their masters. Loyalty is expected of each retainer even if the samurai must disturb public order to honor their master’s name.
The Argentinosaurus, translated to the Argentine lizard, was believed to be 130 feet long and weighed a whopping 110 tons. It had a 35 to 45 foot long neck with a head size of about 4 to 5 basketballs. The Argentinosaurus was discovered in 1993 by Guillermo Heredia. It was unearthed in present-day Argentina, and is also named after this South American country. Scientists have not yet found the complete skeleton of the Argentinosaurus. Paleontologists found 4 foot long vertebrae and 5 foot long tibiae belonging to the Argentinosaurus.
In the film, How to Train Your Dragon, the Vikings are at war, fighting for their institutions and peace from their existential threat, the Dragons. The Vikings are in a society in which the institutions reflect their historical struggles and have shaped them to be close-minded to any peaceful interaction with Dragons. Thus, in How to Train Your Dragon, the institutions that the Vikings had, represented what Rousseau saw as being a society with a self-interest social contract of the majority. This causes estrangement between their civilization and the Dragons. The Vikings eventually form a new social contract, in which the Vikings and Dragons represent Rousseau's general will of equality as rationally as possible given the Dragons are not on the same intellect level.
If you have ever watched the television show “Survivor” or a “Foster’s” commercial you have probably heard that annoying but rather interesting noise in the background music. The instrument that is capable of making such a strange noise is called a didgeridoo. The didgeeridoo is a strange type of trumpet that is used by the Aboriginal people of northern Australia. It is used just as we use our musical instruments for singing and dancing or ceremony and entertainment. It is thought to be one of the oldest instruments still used around the world today. It’s recorded history goes back nearly 1500 years but it is probable that it has been around much longer.
In his essay, “My Island Life,” Luke Harmon discusses the importance of islands and how they have been used by evolutionary biologists to study evolution and diversification on Earth. Harmon focuses on biogeography and on how different species are distributed across the Earth. Harmon also makes a point to mention how human introduction of invasive species is rapidly causing islands around the Earth to become uniform and less diversified. Harmon’s research on the evolutionary history of lizards found on two separate regions of Islands begins with the influence of Wallace’s line, discovered by Alfred Russel Wallace. This line is described as invisible boundaries that separate Earth into provinces, and these provinces contain distinct species. Wallace noticed that the physical influences and conditions did not change across the line, but the species inhabiting it did. With Wallace’s discoveries in mind, Harmon hypothesizes that by studying the diversification and evolutionary history of two different lizard species, anoles and day geckos, will show how evolution can be predictable.
The Genus Varanus komodoensis, or more commonly known as the Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard on Earth. The Komodo dragon belongs to the class reptilian and the phylum Chordata. Have you ever imagined what it would be like to have a one and a half foot lizard as a pet? It probably seems peculiar but many people find that lizards make great pets. One lizard that is incredibly cool is the bearded dragon. Bearded dragons come from the deserts of Australia and were first introduced to the United States in the 1990s. Bearded dragons can range from 12-24 inches, and usually live 12-14 years. They are called bearded dragons because when they feel threatened, they puff out their throat to scare the predator off. They also produce venom, but don’t worry, it’s not poisonous to humans.
A popular ancient Japanese saying states that “The sword is the soul of the warrior.” (Buchanan 120) The warrior in the proverb pertains to the samurai of feudal Japan and the sword refers to their most prominent weapon, the Katana. An ancient blade made through a complicated forging process, the Katana is truly a work of art. Also known as the Japanese long sword or the samurai sword, the Katana is a curved, single-edged blade with ridges along its exterior. It is primarily used as a weapon to cut down or slash its foes (Robinson 28). The ridges along the blade, called the hamon, divides the soft metal components, the shingane, from the hadagane of the hard metal components used to forge the sword to give it its trademark razor sharp edge and flexibility (Turnbull 12). The blade of the Katana is around sixty to seventy centimeters in length and is often likened to the arc of the new moon. With its signature curved edge and its fusion of hard and soft metals, the Katana is considered to be the greatest offensive weapon ever created (O’Neill 114,116). It is a hallmark of Japanese sword history and is a noteworthy aspect of Japanese craftsmanship. The Japanese Katana is an important symbol of Japanese culture whose significance must be asserted.
