With the Knox county jail in Ohio there is three forms of structure when it comes to officers. There is one lieutenant, three sergeants and as many deputy’s that are needed there is currently twenty deputies. There is usually a sergeant on every shift because there is three shifts, each shift is broke into eight hours. The sergeant and lieutenant are the leaders of the other deputies and are in charge of making sure everything is running smoothly. Its always a good thing to have experienced leaders that the others can look up to and learn from. This is a very important role for leadership. The jail deputies have many duties. When a subject is first brought into the jail they are the first people to meet the officer with the person they have …show more content…
Once that is all done they then place that person in a cell. With the Knox country jail there is three different holding cells, one for men, women and then people with health problems. These people are also looked after by a nurse that is hired to come in and check on inmates and give them medication if they need any. There is also a physician that comes in when needed to help. There is a special job that deputies take turns doing which is the overwatch room or the command station. One deputies sits in front of all the cameras in and out of the jai and keeps and eye out for anything that stands out to them. One other very important job that the deputies must do is unlock and lock the doors all through the jail. This can be very overwhelming when there needs to be multiple doors unlocked and also have to make sure they are locked properly after the fact of them being open. In this jail there is also two cooks. These cooks are responsible for getting each meal ready that the deputies will serve at the same times each day. The food that is picked has to meet special requirements when it comes to calories and the nutrients of the food. These cooks should have no interaction with the inmates
The Processes: The sheriff's office falls under county government. The agency that handles most personnel/human resource management (P/HRM) issues is the County Personnel Office (CPO). The CPO plays a key role in collective bargaining for the county with the various guilds/unions, and they are also involved in grievance issues concerning EEO complaints (workplace harassment, discrimination, unfair labor practices, etc.) The CPO is also responsible for the hiring and promotion processes for all career Civil Service positions in county level employment.
...sist either an inmate or a fellow jailer when they need help. Safety is a priority. Psychiatrists are there to diagnose and treat the inmates as best as possible. They are a big part of the facility. Furthermore, there are politics in this jail just like any other jail. Not every unit or floor has politics, but if the floor or unit does, then inmates have to follow it or they will get beat up by the rest of the inmates. Inmates like homosexuals and child molesters get special housing because the system knows that if they are left with the general population of inmates then they will be vulnerable. Last but not least, the cylinder type design of the jail is very convenient to keep a look at all the inmates from the control room. The objective is took be able to have an eye on all inmates all the time; therefore, achieving control and safety over the facility.
Being a prisoner has more restrictions than one may believe. Prisoners are told when they should participate in daily activities and what they are allowed to say or do on a daily basis. This is not a life anyone is determined to experience during any period of time. However, all though for most prison life is just a depiction in a movie or on television, it is a reality for many. Their crimes and behaviors brought them into a world of being stripped of their freedom. Those who oversee the prisoners must control order within the brick walls. An article discussing the duties of a prison officer, defines it as one who “...has responsibility for the security, supervision, training and rehabilitation of people committed to prison by the courts”
In the 1970s, prison was a dangerous place. Prison violence and the high numbers of disruptive inmates led prison authorities to seek new ways to control prisoners. At first, prison staff sought to minimize contact with prisoners by keeping them in their cells for a majority of the day. As time went on, the prison authorities began to brainstorm the idea of having entire prisons dedicated to using these kind of procedures to control the most violent and disruptive inmates. By 1984, many states began construction on super-maximum prisons. In California, two supermax facilities were built by the state: Corcoran State Prison in 1988, and then Pelican Bay in 1989. The federal government soon followed suit and in 1994, the “first federal supermax opened, in Florence, Colorado.” It was not much longer before supermax prisons could be seen all over the country (Abramsky). In Wisconsin’s supermax facility, with similar conditions being found in a majority of supermaxes, there are “100-cell housing units” that are in groups of 25 cells. These cells all face a secured central area. Technology plays a major role in keeping the facility to the highest security standards. Every cell’s doors are controlled remotely and the cells include “video surveillance, motion detection and exterior lighting” (Berge). With these technological securities, there are also procedural precautions. Inmates are kept in their cells for 23 hours a day until their sentences are done. This is said to be for prisoner and staff safety, although some feel otherwise. In 2001, 600 inmates at Pelican Bay went on a hunger strike, demanding reform. Those on hunger strike believed that the isolation and deprivation they faced was against their Eighth Amendment rights. ...
In Ohio, five murders escaped a maximum-security private prison. The food budget can easily be manipulated compared to other parts of the budget. As a result, it is important to examine the food quality in prisons. In a case study of Taft Correctional Institution (a private prison), this private institution ranked the worst in quality of food, variety of food, and amount of food compared to all BOP facilities (Camp et al., 2002).
A typical day for a Correctional Officer would be the preparing of inmates for court appearances. They also receive new inmates to the facility brought in by the Sheriffs Department. Each new inmate must be photographed and fingerprinted upon immediate arrival to the Pre Trial Centre. They are then stripped and fully searched inside and out. With that ...

Correctional Officers are guards who are in charge of keeping prions a save environment for everyone in there. Correctional Officers began when things started getting out of control and inmates had to be getting watched while being in prison or when they were getting transported. Back then penalties were way different from how they are now, “During the Enlightenment of the 18th century, the belief of the punishment alone crime began to weaken” (Correctional Officers). Criminals back then did not have the choice to go into trial or be locked in jail for a certain amount of years, the people in charge of convicting them had the choice to either kill them or force them to do something bad. (Correctional Officers) One of the first prisons who started keeping inmates was in Birdwell England. (Fergusons) Now in the 21st century mostly everywhere across the Unites States there are prisons. This has helped keep inmates ...

In a county jail setting there are several types of managers. These are the jail administrator, the assistant administrator, the county commissioners, the sheriff and his deputies as well as the officers from the local police departments. The management in a county jail setting uses delegation in several ways. One such way occurs when an officer or deputy brings in an inmate for a crime he or she have committed. The officer then delegates the responsibility of getting that inmate to court to the jailer, depending on the seriousness of the crime. Another way is for management to give the jailers authority to discipline an inmate for wrong doing. The author also delegated by having her sub-ordinates pass out canteen, commissary, and razors. Canteen and commissary are personal hygiene and snack items that the inmates purchased. The author was delegated to by her manager in the sense she was put in charge of planning monthly meetings and training sessions.
