For my first screening report I decided to watch the film, King Kong. The original King Kong was produced in 1933 by Merian C Cooper and Ernest B Schoedsack. This film was an 1:40:15 in length and was full of some great actors and a great actress. Some of the actors/actresses included Fay Wray who played Ann, Robert Armstrong who played Carl, Bruce Cabot who played John, and Frank Reicher who played Captain Englehorn. Not only with these great actors/actresses, but also a great story line is what allowed this film to become a later success. What I mean by later is that King Kong did not win an Academy Award but later on it would be noticed for is production. The film has since received some significant honors. He is known for being reckless and is struggling to find a female volunteer. While walking along the street he notices a female being scolded for stealing fruit. Carl sees this as an opportunity because feels like the female is vulnerable. After convincing the girl to join him Ann and the rest of the crew take off. The voyage is not very detailed but it was said that they traveled for 6 months. Finally, the ship reaches this mysterious island that is said to have natives and an unknown creature inhabiting it. When the crew arrives at show the walk into a village because they hear sounds that resemble a ceremony. They quickly find out that they are unwelcome when the ceremony is abruptly stopped and the crew is confronted. The natives take and interest in Ann and try to make a trade for her. Obviously, the crew is unable to agree to this so they quickly retreat back to the ship. Back on the ship, John (Captain Englehorn’s first mate) is talking to Ann on the deck about how he thinks he loves her. Ann also loves John and the start to kiss. John is called away and suddenly the natives snatch Ann off the boat. The crew later finds out she is missing and scurries to land to rescue her. The natives are using Ann as a sacrifice to Kong . Kong appears and takes her deep into the forest. A crew led by Carl and John head into the woods to get her. Along the way

Racist characteristics in films and stories are something that can be perceived in this generation, but was something that was normal and expected in the 1930’s. Sexuality and raciness were items that made films a commodity in the 30’s and King Kong uses both of these to attract a wide audience. These qualities are also a factor as to why King Kong remains a classic throughout the generations.

Sex, love, depression, guilt, trust, all are topics presented in this remarkably well written and performed drama. The Flick, a 2014 Pulitzer Prize winning drama by Annie Baker, serves to provide a social commentary which will leave the audience deep in thought well after the curtain closes. Emporia State Universities Production of this masterpiece was a masterpiece in itself, from the stunningly genuine portrayal of the characters of Avery and Rose, to the realism found within the set, every aspect of the production was superb.
The pristine 1933 King Kong was constructed as a movie: to convey a story to entertain an audience. Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake took the substructure for King Kong and expanded upon it in virtually every way in order to “make again” the astoundment of the original for a modern-day audience. Audiences received the first King Kong very well. The stop-motion sequences of Kong were astounding for their time and the movie grossed over $90,000 in its beginning weekend. In order to bank upon its prosperity again, sequels were made and thus in 1976 a remake was made to amend upon the original. Paramount updated the movie to color, altered the story, and cast Jeff Bridges, a widely popular actor of the time, as the lead actor. Although the movie received stirred reviews, it did exceptionally well in the box office and tripled Paramount’s initial budget for the motion picture. Gradually taking on more responsibility and trying to build up its reputation over the years, Hollywood has progressively assumed the position of history-teller for the American public. This role, whether or not an appropriate one for an industry such as Hollywood to tackle, has catapulted actors and actresses into high paying, high visibility positions. History has and will continue to be one of the main subjects that the movie industry has been fascinated with. It is an alive and very fragile subject that, through its multi-dimensional character, requires careful attention by everyone involved in the project. Whenever Hollywood tackles an historical topic, whether portraying a non-disputable factual event or only a vaguely one, the industry is bound to encounter dispute and criticism.
Due to the impressionable essence of the audience, the film’s message has a responsibility as it will leave an impact on the viewership. The film Stagecoach (1939) was a Western film which essentially spoke to generations of men seeking a model of manhood grounded in bravery, moral violence, and independence; whereas with the women characters, they represented civilization and domestication” (Dr Nance week 3). The reception of the audience was positive; the film thrived in society as it came out at a time where the Great Depression saw a time of family breakdown and disillusionment of the American Dream (Dr Nance week 3). Essentially, the dark aspects and the gendered representations resonated with the audience as it was relevant to their own lives. The impact of this film, however, can come from the desensitization to violence in society. Another example can be from the film King Kong and the representation of the ‘damsel in distress’ trope of a woman needing to be saved. Citizen Kane has earned the prestigious honor of being regarded as the number one movie of all time because of Welles’ groundbreaking narrative and plot structures that paved a path for the future of the film industry. Though critics have viewed the film with such prestige over the years, a present day viewer might encounter a great amount of confusion or difficulty as to why Citizen Kane is the number one movie on the American Film Institute’s top 100 movies of all time. Especially considering the modern day film industry, Welles’ production does not measure up to the amount of thrill and entertainment audiences experience today. Not even considering the possibilities with special effects and technology, Citizen Kane seems to lack an exciting plot that might involve some action or twists instead of the gossip of a man’s life that we no longer appreciate. In 1941, the general public could greatly appreciate the connections between Kane and William Randolph Hearst unlike young adults watching the film now.

The film ‘Minority Report’ directed by Steven Spielberg was released in 2002 and is set in the future of 2054. The main idea for Minority Report, is about a crime unit, which is set around 3 psychic twins, the ‘pre-cogs’ who have the ability to see brutal crimes before they are to occur. The pre-cogs are rested in a room, also called ‘The Temple’ where they are nurtured and their visions are recorded. The pre-crime unit, equipped with advance tech rush to the scene and stop the crime before they occur. Tom Cruise being the action movie star he is, playing the on-the-run pre-crime cop role of John Anderton, paired with Steven Spielberg at his directional best, make a significant work of art. Spielberg uses various techniques to portray several ideas to directly show the viewers a certain message.
It is amazing how a seemingly educated woman that has won Oscar awards for her documentaries, could possibly be so far off base in her review of the Disney movie “The Lion King”. Margaret Lazarus has taken a movie made for the entertainment of children and turned it into something that is racist, sexist and stereotypes gender roles. She uses many personal arguments to review the movie but offers few solutions. The author is well organized but she lacks alternate points of view and does not use adequate sources. Lazarus utilizes the statement at the end of her review that “the Disney Magic entranced her children, but they and millions of other children were given hidden messages that could only do them and us harm” (118). She makes her point by saying that “the Disney Magic reinforces and reproduces bigoted and stereotyped views of minorities and women in our society” (Lazarus 117). She makes comparisons such as elephant graveyards are like ghettos (Lazarus 118). Other lines of reasoning Lazarus gives us are about Whoopie Goldberg using inner city dialect, the villain Scar being gay, and only those born to privilege can bring about change (118).
Kino, Juana, and Coyotito go back to the beach and row out to an oyster bed, where he begins to search for the pearl. As Kino continues to search, Juana takes things into her own hands after being refused by the doctor and sucks the poison out of Coyotito and then puts seaweed on the wound, unknowingly healing him. Meanwhile Kino gathers several small oysters but suddenly comes across a particularly large oyster. He picks the oyster up and returns to the surface. When Kino opens the oyster he discovers the pearl. Word that the pearl has been discovered travel through the town quickly. People in the town became jealous of Kino and his family which eventually leads to a great deal of harm.
Films have been used as a means to articulate the Hong Kong identity. The idea of Hong Kong identity has been rooted into the mind of Hong Kong people through films. As films can show the uniqueness of Hong Kong, the attitude of Hong Kong people towards Hong Kong and reflect the current issues of Hong Kong, they articulate Hong Kong identity in these three ways.
The first ever successful full-feature film was named Birth of a Nation. Running just over three hours long and taking nearly 100,000 dollars to make, this movie made over 18 million dollars in revenue and set a standard for future movies to come. This highly racist story was considered very powerful and deep. The movie adapted most of its story line from the book The Clansman, by Thomas Dixon. Controversial, exciting and interesting, this movie showed every reason to be one of the best of the 1920’s.
