I spent my time volunteering with the Concordia teacher corps as a reading coach at Faubion elementary school. This program has been going on for a couple of years, and what it does is help struggling readers in the community. It takes students who very often can not even write their own name, or even know where to begin reading a book, and pairs them up with a reading coach. The reading coach 's job is to not only teach them how to read, but also to show them that reading can be enjoyable. This can prove to be exceptionally difficult when tutoring an energetic kindergartener who does not want to sit still. The whole program lasts about 16 weeks. In the end, the students receive a couple of books and a game that they can take home. There is …show more content…
I am a secondary education major with an endorsement in English, and this project convinced me that I made the right decision going into secondary education rather than primary. I feel teaching primary is like putting out a fire, only to turn around and find 10 more fires that need to be put out right behind your back. Kindergarteners are very energetic, and you often cannot keep their focus on a certain project for longer than a couple minutes. Which is why my lesson plans have so many different ideas on them. I learned that I always need a backup and a backup backup plan because if the child is not interested in the activity than you are simply wasting precious …show more content…
The students were ages 4-6, and each and every single one of them knew the letters in the alphabet, and was able to identify them. There was a four year old named Olin that was actually able to read a book to me with a very minimum amount of help. These students ' parents paid almost $400 for them to go to this camp. I began to wonder if money, and social class had an effect on a child 's reading level. Upon doing some research I discovered that social class actually has an enormous effect on a child 's performance in school. I am excited to see the post assessment results, and to see the difference that the tutoring has made. Overall, it was an extremely rewarding
The lesson plan for the program will be: in third grade of elementary the students will be assigned a foreign language pen pal which they will be exchanging letters with, their tests will be of doing a presentation of their second language each time they present it will get more difficult and challenging, from fourth grade up to twelfth grade the students will be taken to convention centers giving speeches to people and will also co-host activities which will strengthen their vocabulary and help them open up to opportunities. It all might seem like a lot of work and stressful or not even possible to do but this program is really effective because it pushed students to their potential knowledge. By the time that the students get to high school they will be fluent speakers of their second language and will also be comfortable speaking to people. For the final exam which would be in their senior year of high school, the students will be taken to the state or country of their second language, and the students will have to find their way back home, they will not be given a map nor a phone, from where the students are dropped off they will have to communicate with people to get directions to find their way back home. This all seems to be intense but it by putting them in a situation of having to talk to other
Middle School and AVID has prepared me for high school in many different ways. I will use everything I have learned in middle school and AVID in order to achieve success in high school. I have learned skills such as managing my time, organizing my work, and taking good and quality notes. If I use these skills in high school I know I will succeed. I also know that these skills would make it easier for me to reach my goals in completing dual enrollment and receiving at least a 4.0 GPA.
I work in an elementary school as the ELL support and have seen first- hand how the program works in our school. Over a year ago many of teachers in our school deployed students by reading ability to different classrooms to receive reading instruction at their reading level. Unfortunately, the homeroom teacher was not able to know their student as a “reader”. It was especially difficult to share reading progress with parent at conferences unless the reading teacher was there at attend. Students in the classrooms worked on similar needs. Teacher used their own systems of delivery. Teachers used the anthology for teaching reading and pulled from their own sources. Some students who were deployed were apprehensive about going to another room and it...

The daycare that I visited was Rosemont Daycare and Preschool. This center is faith based and I was able observe the “Duck Class” which was the age group of four and five year olds. I went to observe on February 11th and 16th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 and the 18th from 3:00 to 6:00. On the 11th and 16th, there were a total of 12 children in the Duck class. At 9:00 the children were engaged in circle time meaning that the children were learning about their bible verse for that month which was “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.” The children then discussed what they thought that meant. On the 11th I was present to see the children, the ones I decided to observe were Kali, Roslyn, Fiona, and Brayden. When the children were doing crafts I sat near the counter island in the class room so I was out of the way but still able to see and hear what the kids were doing and saying at the table.
This essay will explore the authors meaning of reflection, how various reflective styles can benefit the practitioners within their settings, and how important reflection is within Early Years Practice. According to Appleby (2010, p.10), reflection is a generic term which describes various behaviours involving feelings, and thinking about thoughts and experiences, in order to examine issues and develop, new understandings and insights. Reflection within practice allows the practitioner to develop a sense of awareness around their daily activities, and helps them to evaluate how they could evolve these activities further, if the given opportunity was to arise again. Similarly, keeping a reflective journal
I observed at St. Eve’s Learning Center location in their preschool room. The center has a naturalistic feel to the environment and all of the staff is friendly and welcoming. The classroom displayed best practices, modern theories and research, and followed expected standards set by their accreditations.
Numerous experiences have influenced my decision to become a teacher. One summer I was privileged to get to go to Myrtle Beach and lead a backyard bible school for Pre-K and K aged kids at a family campground. Crating unique ways of teaching kindergarten kids with short attention spans challenges the teacher, forcing me to use my imagination. In search of opening up a Canadian child who...
For my community involvement project, I volunteered at Memminger Elementary School for a program called “Reading Partners.” The program focuses on helping children build strong literacy skills to carry with them into their academic careers. It requires the tutor to read to the student that has been assigned, and in turn, the student reads to the tutor. The program assists in teaching the students valuable reading skills. Being able to read is critical to a child’s educational success.
As a teacher, you need to encourage all attempts at reading, writing, speaking, and allowing children to experience the different functions and use of literacy activity (The Access Center, n.d.). Moreover, it is crucial for educators to understand phonological awareness and phonics; know what constitutes good children’s literature and how to use it; know children who need additional assistance with beginning reading and writing (Cunningham et al, 2004 as cited in McLachlan et al, 2013, p. 112). Educators also need to plan effective activities to assist children experience reading aloud, listening to other children read aloud, listening to tape recordings, and videotapes so children have opportunities to integrate and extend their literacy knowledge (The Access Center, n.d.). Morrow (1990 as cited in The Access Center, n.d.) notes that classroom with greater teacher facilitation promote literacy behaviours, so it is educators’ role to provide literacy rich
I adore working with kids. In the summer I help with a summer program where we get to put on a show for them. The program is called Sidewalk Kids Hour (SWKH). SWKH includes a puppet show, a drama, and fun games. We also serve a meal at the end of the afternoon. SWKH helps the homeless kids get a healthy meal without complications. Not only does this keep them fed, but it also helps them stay out of trouble. Seeing children’s happy faces is wonderful. There is not only the feeling of joy, but also the feeling that their lives are better because of SWKH.
One hundred and fifty-nine students from the middle-class, different backgrounds and races whom were 3-12 years of age were gathered together in 2011 from eight summer camps. There were 12 to 18 children of the same age placed in the same group each. The study did not use gender as a factor to get results.
For my assignment I have decided to choose a group which I have just finished taking for level 1 Hairdressing and they have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. This is within my current role as a hairdressing lecturer at Hugh Baird College which I have done since October. Within this group there are a couple of people who have support workers. There is one student within the group who has severe learning difficulties and is a more mature student. She also has many health problems which results in her having to carry an oxygen tank around for when she has any problems with her breathing due to her having problems with her heart. There is also another student in the class who has learning difficulties, she is very clever but just needs someone there for when she needs something explaining. She also has a support worker that comes in to give her support. This student has also been going through personal problems at home and has attendance issues. There is another student within this group who has severe dyslexia. She doesn’t have a support worker but the support people who are in there do give her help as she can have a tendency to give up, not to listen and just needs to be kept on track so by sitting next to a person that does have a support worker she gets the help from them. These three students have all had their level 1 qualification extended for a year were the rest of the group have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. Two of these students may progress on to level 2 but one doesn’t have the ability to be able to do this as the requirements are too high for her. The reason the course was extended for them was because they were struggling with the work that was required for this qualification, but as the col...
Attending kindergarten means having more structure in a child’s young life, and they are ready for it after going to preschool. They have learned to socialize, follow simple rules, and stay on a task longer and longer. They are now ready for more intense learning; this is an opportune time for a teacher to harness the mind and still keep the fun and adventure of a kindergartener’s mind going.
When I first came into this classroom, I was terrified. I had always heard horror stories about kindergarten and how it takes a special person to take on the responsibility to teach this grade. To tell you the truth, after going through what I went through with this class, I really enjoyed being in a kindergarten class and I can see myself being a kindergarten teacher. I have much more patience for this grade level than I had thought previously. Then having the opportunity to work and observe a student one on one reaffirmed my passion for helping students, which made me very sad to know that I wouldn’t be coming back every Tuesday to help out or that I wouldn’t be there to tie K’s shoes when they became untied after him running around. Some questions I have after collecting all of this information about my LP are mostly about how connections to behavioral issues in low income areas and how we help those students to succeed. I’d like to work in a low income
