Kind Fortune in Aphra Behn's The Rover
Fortune governs people's lives -- a reasonable conclusion considering the continuing presence of billboards advertising palm readers, colorful displays of horoscopes in magazines, and late night commercials marketing tarot card readings for only two dollars a minute. In her farcical comedy The Rover, Aphra Behn traces the fates of ladies of fortune, ladies of the night, men of honour, and men of disrepute as that sneaky rogue called Love entangles their lives. Throughout the play, Behn uses fortune in every sense of the word to guide people's actions until finally Fortune personified becomes an active character in the plot.
In the beginning scene, Florinda and Hellena discuss the former's impending marriage and her hope to marry a man "...due to my beauty, birth and fortune..." (Behn Act I, Scene I). Pedro argues for Don Vincentio as a "...man of so vast a fortune..." (Act I, Scene I) and attempts to dissuade his sister from marrying Belvile because he "...has no fortune to bring..." (Act I, Scene I)....
The starting of the story kept me in suspense: the starting sentence, “No one can accuse Philippa and me of having married in haste” (Fox 1). This clearly brought up the theme of love and marriage. The selection of words by the narrator told that the speaker did not regret his marriage. The defensive tone of the narrator made me to think that perhaps people had criticized his marriage.
Grande introduces to the audience various characters that cross Juana 's path to either alter or assist her on her journey to find her father. Through those individuals, Grande offers a strong comparison of female characters who follow the norms, versus those that challenge gender roles that
Conflicts between people often have multiple causes and effects. A majority of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an argument that dates back to Biblical times. The Jewish argue Palestine was the historical site of all Jewish kingdoms, which was promised to Abraham and his descendants. The Arabs argue that Ishmael, forefather of Arabs, is the son of Abraham so God’s promise that the land should go to Abraham’s descendents includes Arabs as well . Some of the main causes which worsen the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are the disparity between Sykes-Picot agreement and Balfour Declaration, The United Nation Partition plan of 1947, which was the separation of the boundaries, and Hitler’s Final Solution. While these causes affected both sides
At the beginning of the story, the protagonist, Cleofilas, had an illusion that all romances are like the ones she has seen on television. However, she soon realizes that her relationship with Juan Pedro was nothing like what she had dreamed it would be. Cisneros wants to emphasize the idea that when men bring home the primary source of income in the family, they feel they have power over their wives. Cisneros uses Juan Pedro in the story to portray this idea. For instance, Cleofilas often tells herself that if she had any brains in her, she would realize that Juan Pedro wakes up before the rooster to earn his living to pay for the food in her belly and a roof over her head (Cisneros, 1991, p.249). Cisneros wants to make a point that when men feel that they have power over their wives, women begin to feel a sense of low self-worth.
? . . . it made no difference if they studied medicine or had the right to vote, because they would not have the strength to do it, but she herself [Nivea] was not brave enough to be among the first to give up the fashion.? (6, Ch 1) The women in this society are dependant on the dominant male figure to handle political and economical duties. This point of view is intended to mimic the older generation of women ad present a foundation for the growth of an enlightened generation. Allende uses this excerpt to present a foundation of structure to the novel by beginning with the extremes of opinion, which are followed in the novel through different generations. Alba for example, become a very outspoken activist by trying to attend the student protests and follow Miguel on his demonstrations, a sharp contrast to the indifference or shallowness found in her great grandmother.
Arredondo exposed Luisa as a dynamic character because during the story the readers can see the changes that her personality had over the time. At the beginning of the story the reader can see how Luisa takes care of her uncle with devotion and love, but after they married she considered it as a disgusting duty. Ines Arredondo described Luisa as woman who has the power of “purify everything” (81), but after suffering the physical abuse of her uncle, all her innocence disappear. She was an innocent girl that was reserving herself for marriage. However, after married her uncle, she started seen the things in a different way. Now, she thinks of herself as “the vilest of harlot” (87). The way that the author exposes Luisa is like happy young lady that thanks to the circumstances enter to a deep depression that changes her life and she “was not able to go back to who I [she] was”
Beli’s impulses allow her to ignore the fact that falling atomically in love with the Gangster, a man she meets in a luxurious nightclub, is wrong. In a world where no one gives her such feeling, the Gangster makes Beli feel beautiful. But, the Gangster is a pimp and exploits women, which shows the degradation of women such as Beli. The Trujillo system in the Dominican Republic, under which the Cabaral’s are associated with, exploits women and the Gangster, just like Trujillo did exactly that. This path of life that Beli embarks on is the wrong choice because it is plagued with the fukú. She sees the Gangster as an escape out of her current life because he is extremely rich. The Gangster promises her a house in Miami with as many bedrooms as she wants. Beli is naïve and does not realize that the Gangster cannot help her escape her life that she is unhappy with. Instead all the Gangster can bring to Beli is bad luck. The Gangster ends up being married to Trujillo’s sister, who is extremely cruel and lives up to the name of Trujillo. The Gangster’s wife has Beli beaten until she almost dies. Beli is vulnerable because the Gangster has power over her; she truly believes that he is an escape from her Dominican world. All along La Inca sees otherwise and tells Beli that she is crazy. La Inca also implies that a man cannot save her, but Beli continues to make

This misogynistic attitude is present in ‘Much Ado about Nothing’. In the play, Messina is presented as being a positive and cheerful community and the woman appear to have freedom, however those misogynistic attitudes of the time period are still demonstrated. When Leonato tells his daughter, Hero, “daughter, remember what I told you: if the prince do solicit you in that kind, you know your answer.” Don Pedro is b...
They objectify her, think of her as a source of pride, and view her as an obstacle in their way of progressing. However, her reality is much more innocent than they would like to believe. Marcela values her freedom and believes “true love is not divided and must be voluntary, not forced” (Cervantes 99). Her rejections, which are taken by the men as evilness, are due to the fact that the men love her strictly based on her looks, and she desires a love which is more personal and fulfilling. Of all the men listening to her speech, Don Quixote is the only one who complied with her wish not to be followed, and stopped anyone who tried, but even this honor was done out of his false reality of being a knight errant and demonstrating loyalty to his Dulcinea of
The scene initiates where Othello is interrogating Emilia on Desdemona’s presumed infidelity. Earlier in Act 3, the themes of anger and confusion are introduced by Iago, where Othello begins to question Desdemona of her alleged disloyal actions. Othello, whom was previously was enraged by Iago's deceptive language regarding Cassio and Desdemona’s ‘imagined’ affair, carried through his anger and unleashed it in a fit of a barrage of accusations such as "heaven doth truly thou art false as hell." (Act 4, Scene 2, Line 39), towards Desdemona and calling her ‘a subtle whore’ and ‘strumpet’, which implies the disbelief that Othello has for Desdemona. However, Othello is oblivious to the truth, therefore leaving desdemona stunned and confused as she hesitantly questions Othello of his demeanor, stated "to whom my lord, with whom, how am I false?" (Act 4, Scene 2, lines 40). Ot...
Fermina Daza was raised in an environment where women’s success is based on her ability to marry a man of honor and monetary value. She is expected to be brought up in this manner by a fellow female or mother; however Fermina’s mother died when Fermina was very young, thus her father, Lorenzo Daza, an illiterate mule trader, was left to take on the role. Márquez identifies Lorenzo’s motives and expectations for Fermina as he states, “When [Lorenzo Daza’s] wife died, he had set only one goal for himself: to turn his daughter into a great lady.” His emphasis on his one goal for Fermina infers that he did not necessarily have the to intentions to build or establish a communicative relationship with his daughter. He wanted better for Fe...
The automobile industry is a pillar of global economy. Globally automotive contributes roughly 3 % of all GDP output. It historically has contributed 3.0 – 3.5 % to the overall GDP in the US. The share is even higher in the emerging markets, with the rates in china and India at 7 % and rising. China produces the highest number of automobiles followed by US and Japan (oica.net, 2015). The industry supports direct employment of 9 million people to build 60 million vehicles and parts that go into them (oica.net, 2015). Many other industries such as steel, iron, glass, aluminium, textiles etc. are associated with the automotive industry and resulting in more than 50 million jobs owed to the auto
However, Florinda does not argue against the marriage to Antonio saying that she “has no defense to Antonio’s love” (879) because the only reason she does not want to be with him is her own feelings, which unfortunately do not account for much. Once their brother leaves, Florinda devises a plan to meet with Belville, in hopes of running away with him. She goes to the carnival in disguise and slips Belville a letter instructing him to come to “the Garden-Gate” (885) at “ten at night.” (885) The fact that Florinda must go to the trouble of disguising herself, sneaking out to a carnival, and slipping Belville a note filled with instructions just to meet with him against her brothers wishes, illustrates just how difficult it was for women to rebel against the men who control their lives.
