Kiki Smith
Kiki Smith is an American artist who was born on January 18th, 1954 in Nuremberg, Germany. Her father, Tony Smith, was a minimalist sculptor and her mother, Jane Lawrence, was a popular American actress and opera singer.
Growing up, Kiki was always interested in art. Starting at a very young age, she worked alongside her father to help him create his sculptures. As she grew up, she was very unsure what she wanted to do with her life. Kiki later stated in an interview, “I became an artist because I didn’t know what to do and I thought it was really fun to make things.” With that being said, Kiki enrolled in Hartford Art School in 1974 in West Hartford, Connecticut. However, she dropped out eighteen months later and moved to New York in 1976. Kiki’s time at Hartford was the only art school she ever attended in her life. Soon after dropping out, she became part of Collaborative Projects Inc. She worked with a handful of other artists to put together venues of various art forms in places you wouldn’t normally expect to find an art venue.

Several years later, Kiki and her sister Beatrice began training to become emergency medical technicians.
Kiki once again did not finish her schooling. However, the time she spent in medical school influenced her majorly. Many of Kiki’s artworks are extremely anatomically correct. This is all due to her knowledge of the human body. It’s even been said that some of her sculptures could be used as medical school anatomical models.
Kiki had her first successful showing at the Kitchen Gallery in 1982. On display was her sculpted female figures, many of which appeared to look unfinished, deformed, or disfigured. She designed many of her figures to have no skin or strange body parts. She had a very unique imagination.
Kiki was very much influenced by Catholicism. She created sculptures of female figures without skin and deformed bodies. Kiki
stated: “Catholicism has these ideas of the host, of eating the body, drinking the body, ingesting a soul or spirit; and then of the reliquary, like a chop shop of bodies. Catholicism is always involved in physical manifestations of [spiritual] conditions, always taking inanimate objects and attributing meaning to them. In that way it's compatible with art." Kiki believes that Catholicism involves a rather morbid obsession with the body due to the idea that followers eat the body and drink the blood of Christ (symbolically) and the images of suffering and death that are prevalent in churches throughout the world. A good example would be the Crucifixion. It is extremely obvious that all of these influence her work in one way or another. To this day, Smith still lives in New York and still continues to create art. She focuses a lot of her artworks towards the feminist movement. However, she is slowly straying away from that. She now creates works based on fairy tales and myths. Kiki has said that her works are “no longer linear and the narrative imbued in them has fallen apart. With that being said, it’s quite possible we have not seen all of what Kiki is capable of. Her art will continue to become more and more unique and interesting. She hopes that the individual viewing the art will use their imagination to develop their own stories within the work.

The Statue of a kouros represents a Greek male. With one foot forward, the statue at the same time, represents movement and is able to stand on it own. This also gives the over life size figure, visible weight. In this early figure, geometric forms seem to predominate, and anatomical details, such as the chest muscles and pelvic arch, are presented with somewhat of exaggerated lines. Although the exaggerated lines show where these muscles belong, the detail is still missing. Looking up and down this nude body, at this miss proportioned and lacking of detail body, the hair is what grabs my attention. The hair is carved with detail not noticeable in the rest of the body. As well, although the fists are clinched and still bonded to the body, the legs and elbows are separated. The ability to move around and inspect the statue makes a big difference than if it was up against a wall, or just looking at its picture. The legs, which support the weight of the statue, have a visible strength which is seen in the knees. The head is what carried the most detail, the ears although to far back, are intricately designed. It is the ability to walk around the entire statue that allows me to see the different aspects and places where attention to detail was placed. However, he does not expand into three dimensional space; he has a closed-off, column-like appearance
Art could be displayed in many different forms; through photography, zines, poetry, or even a scrapbook. There are many inspirational women artists throughout history, including famous women artists such Artemisia Gentileschi and Georgia O’Keeffe. When searching for famous female artists that stood out to me, I found Frida Kahlo, and Barbara Kruger. Two very contrasting type of artists, though both extremely artistic. Both of these artists are known to be feminists, and displayed their issues through painting and photography. Frida Kahlo and Barbara Kruger’s social and historical significance will be discussed.

Prior to the 20th century, female artists were the minority members of the art world (Montfort). They lacked formal training and therefore were not taken seriously. If they did paint, it was generally assumed they had a relative who was a relatively well known male painter. Women usually worked with still lifes and miniatures which were the “lowest” in the hierarchy of genres, bible scenes, history, and mythological paintings being at the top (Montfort). To be able to paint the more respected genres, one had to have experience studying anatomy and drawing the male nude, both activities considered t...
Kiki Smith is a feminist artist who is known for using the human body and its substances in ways that no other artist has before. “This work displays often grotesque and uncomfortable themes that would usually only be seen in private, however socially suppressed ideas towards things such as defecation and human fragility are often purposely overlooked today.” (Feminist Blog). Some of the issues she displays through art are abortion, AIDS, gender, race and women. Smith is known for using animals, fairytale icons, and other elements of nature in her artwork.
Throughout history art has played a major role in society. It started out with paintings and went to photography and eventually to films. Artistic interpretation depended on whom the artist was and what he or she wanted to present to the audience. When it came to portraiture, whether it was paintings or photography, the idea of mimesis was very important. However important this may have been, the portraits were mostly products of the media and fashions during that time period. Whatever was popular during the time was used such as columns or curtains in the background. The face was the main focus in the painting and there was little focus on the body. Later on during photography the body was focused on more. Even though photography was used much later after paintings were used, it allowed the artist even more artistic interpretation because of the ability to play a different role and not having to be ones self. The artists that will be focused on are Frida Kahlo and Cindy Sherman. They lived during different periods and their artistic intentions varied because of that. They also had similarities in that they thought outside of the conventional roles. These women were both self-portraiture artists and although they were considered that their interpretations did not always make their portraits self-portraits. Traditionally the artist was an outsider, but when it came to self-portraiture they became the subject and the audience became the outsider. The similarities and differences of Frida Kahlo and Cindy Sherman’s art were tied into the strength and also vulnerability they had because of their roles as women. They wanted the audience to see a background story to the portraits and not just an image of a beautiful face.

No! In the paper it said that Soapy Smith is back again. On the road stealing peoples money! Way back when in Coweta County, Georgia on November 2nd, 1860, Jefferson Randolph aka “Soapy Smith” was born. Soapy was a con artist and was definitely skilled at it. A con artist is someone that scams people out of their money. His mother was Emily Dawson Edmondson and Soapy’s father was Jefferson Randolph the 1st. They came from a wealthy family. Soapy was an only child. No brothers no sisters, just big big crimes. Soapy Smith is the character that never gets caught. Soapy is a smart and sophisticated man with some serious crime on his hands.
For years, the welfare topic has been debated, and throughout history, both failed and thriving solutions have been seen to this dispute. The settlement of the matter of welfare came from independently sponsored programs only to be replaced by government funded organizations and devices to benefit the less fortunate using taxes, aids, and deductions. With the only hope to overcome the grief stricken state our country has been in over the centuries of seeing the destruction of nations over the word that stirs up a variety of emotions, welfare, to be the decreased amount and time government support should be offered. Most importantly, as seen through the effects of social welfare, the need for change in responsibility, the root of the problem, is to be Christians and the community rather than the government’s, whose failed efforts left our country in declining “poverty” as identified by the means-tested programs and raised taxes.

Yayoi Kusama is an inventive Japanese artist who was part of multiple avant-garde movements of the 20th century and who is still creating innovative art in the 21st century. One of her later works, an installation titled Pumpkin of 2008, is a particularly good example of her style as an amassing of her experimentation in technique and personal expression. Her life experiences are very much present in her art, and it is for this reason that studying some of the aspects of her life is helpful, before examining her art, for by revealing some of these events, her artistic perspective may be better understood.
