Group Consensus: As leaders of organization, the need for these three concepts is fundamental to development. Leaders should seize the concept of vision and recognize its need in team development. Team members, who understand that they have an important part in developing vision, have the ability to “own their vision” and sustain the momentum to achieve it. With that in mind, leaders who hone this concept could develop a long-term perspective that gives the leader the ability to approach trials with confidence. As a group, recognizing that everyone goes through the storm is pinnacle to growing in resiliency. Therefore a leaders job is to assist his or her subordinates during those storms especially in the time of crisis people need their leader more than anything. Therefore the leader must look at ways to get the follower to be on board with the views and ideologies of the organization. With that in mind, leaders must set the right example to move the employee from point A to B. There have been countless books, lectures, and and trainings, and retreats constructed around the idea of cultivating leadership in an individual. However, cultivating individuals’ ability to follow great leadership has received far less attention. Who are these people leading if each person within an organization is being trained to be a leader? The word follower has negative connotations, evoking the images of a weak, uncreative, milquetoast personality. However, Jimmy Collins, in his book, “Creative Followership: In the Shadow of Greatness”, suggests that the ability to be led brings as much creativity, consciousness, and indeed leadership to an organization or team as the leader himself. Great followership is a reflection of great leadership. In this, the follower is just as important as the leader in the relationship. Many great leaders have asserted that a leader with even a modicum of understanding of what drives their subordinates can take their organization to previously undreamt-of heights in creativity and productivity. Collins does not disabuse us of this notion, he does however add that the follower is indispensable agent in this interplay between leader and follower.

Effective leaders use a variety of relationship-oriented behaviors and attitudes. Leaders must instill values and vision to their followers. Leaders who believe in the mission of the organization will also use efficient values that resonate with members. These values will lead others to act in the same manner of the overall company mission, vision, and values statements. For this reason, relationship-oriented leaders will put all components in writing. Leaders must align people from all departments and all work positions for the best effect. Focusing on “pulling people together” can be a difficult option but one that will lead to the efficient alignment of all employees/followers. A relationship-oriented leader focuses a follower’s need “for achievement, personal growth, a sense of belonging, recognition, self-esteem, and a feeling of control over one’s life” (Dubrin, 2013, p. 117). Relationship-oriented leaders give emotional support and encouragement by allowing others to participate in decisions, displays frequent praise for accomplishments and improves morale.
