In Kevin Young’s poem an “Ode to Pork,” the sound effects play immensely into the overall tone of the poem. It could help the reader conjure up times when they were in the kitchen themselves or having a meal prepared for them. It does also add heavily to a nostalgic flair by making the reader go back to possibly good memories of some kind of gathering. Even if it was not pork, it still became in a sense semi-personal to the reader because one thing is truly universal everyone does eat and everyone has some fond memory of eating their favorite food. Furthermore, humans are very apt at remembering sounds very well so as I read this I can even hear the sizzling grill or the popping of bacon. Throughout the course of the poem, Young lays on
