Recommended: Essay on the history of art and its evolution

Kenneth Price (American, 1935-2012), Ceramics Since time immemorial, humans have been creating art that defines creation and worldly aspects. Most artists portray art in different forms, such as music, language, and dances. The evolution of man caused art to develop with the invention of new techniques and materials. Art characterized the nature, politics, and social aspects of the community. However, each movement came up with new styles that artists incorporated into their works. The art industry grew as more people became attracted to new forms that encouraged artists to observe creativity or face extinction. Besides, there arose competition among artists’ works about who produced the best and creative work. Davey Hickey, a critic, described Price’s work as ludicrous and bewitching since the objects portray different shapes and architectural aspects (Boucher 1). Price strived to emulate beauty and mystery in the clay products (Boucher). He then shifted from the cup series and began exploring the sculptural side by claiming that both the inside and outside of a container share the same importance thus his works stressed from this perspective (J. Baron & R. Baron 1). The egg-shaped sculpture is an example of this new structure. This sculpture reflects the hand-made craft design by Price as it consists of a smooth exterior and a rough exterior (J. Baron & R. Baron 1). It is during this period when Kenneth was experimenting on the biomorphic, humorous and geometric forms (“Ken Price Sculpture” 1). Price motivates people to understand the manifold association of the world by examining the rough and smooth surfaces. Uncertainty feels actively courted in Voulkos' vessels, and this embrace of chance gives them a surprisingly contradictory sense of ease. Critical to the emergence of a significant art scene in Los Angeles in the second half of the 1950s, the 75-year-old artist has lived in Northern California since 1959 and this was his only second solo show in an L.A gallery in 30 years.”These days, L.A. is recognized as a center for the production of contemporary art. But in the 1950s, the scene was slim -- few galleries and fewer museums. Despite the obscurity, a handful of solitary and determined artists broke ground here, stretching the inflexible definitions of what constitutes painting, sculpture and other media. Among these avant-gardists was Peter Voulkos.” In 1954, Voulkos was hired as chairman of the fledgling ceramics department at the L.A. County Art Institute, now Otis College of Art and Design, and during the five years that followed, he led what came to be known as the "Clay Revolution." Students like John Mason, Paul Soldner, Ken Price and Billy Al Bengston, all of whom went on to become respected artists, were among his foot soldiers in the battle to free clay from its handicraft associations.
