I structured my poem as a free-verse one, where it is not subject to a consistent rhyme, meter or rhythm scheme. Nor does it include much vivid imagery. What makes the poem is its message regarding the state-of-America, the mood and emotion I wished to present, and my use of language.
The first stanza begins with the lines “I remember you was conflicted, misusing your influence.” I pulled these lines for Kendrick Lamar’s poem from his album “To Pimp a Butterfly.” Through these lines, I wanted to set the scene for my poem to be one where I would be struggling in a time of conflict and contemplating the results of it. In this case, my "influence" is my socio-economic advantage in this world and my power to make a change. However, I am conflicted in that I believe I misused this influence. As the stanza progresses, I describe the weighing of this conflict on my self-worth and well-being. Through my "resentment that turned into deep depression," I express my sorrow through failing in misusing my influence. But that realization spawned an idea to "go running for answers."

The speaker’s rocky encounter with her ex-lover is captured through personification, diction, and tone. Overall, the poem recaps the inner conflicts that the speak endures while speaking to her ex-lover. She ponders through stages of the past and present. Memories of how they were together and the present and how she feels about him. Never once did she broadcast her emotions towards him, demonstrating the strong facade on the outside, but the crumbling structure on the inside.
Julia Alvarez’s In the Time of the Butterflies is an account of the four Mirabal sisters’ lives in the Dominican Republic during Rafael Trujillo’s dictatorship. Three of the Mirabal sisters - Minerva, Patria and Maria Teresa sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom by participating in the underground movement which opposed Trujillo’s dictatorship. Their participation in the revolution was a threat to Trujillo’s power and this resulted in the three sisters being killed. The novel tells the story from the point of view of each of the four siblings. The sisters, also referred to as, “The Butterflies,” each had a different approach to dealing with life under Trujillo’s reign. Minerva, the first person from her family to join the revolution, was motivated by principles and she contributed consistently to the revolution. They are many different forms of poems that writers make. Poems are meant to read in order to go beyond traditional form of thinking. The poem “Read This Poem from the Bottom up” by Ruth Porritt is a reverso poem in which you can read the poem from bottom up to top down. This would be consider a free verse poem and yet saying it’s a free verse could be consider an oxymoron to free verses because it must have the same words to read from the top down to bottom up. This poem has all the ingredients to be consider a good poem. The purpose of the poem is to break traditional form of thinking and challenge the narrator to break the rules of how poem can be written.
One of Pat Moras poems that imply blank verse is La Migra. Blank verse sounds pretty much like an everyday conversation, and propagate the reader for a heightened response to effects of language, and image in the poem. Blank verse is favored for reflective and narrative poems, and does not rhyme. Blank verse fits perfectly in La Migra, because Pat Mora is narrating the children game, what they are saying, what they are imagining, and if the reader has a good imagination, they can even imagine the setting and think about what is actually happening. Blank verse is also favored in the reflective way, because what Pat Mora is trying to express in La Migra is that everyone has feelings, it does not matter where people are from, or if they are legal or illegally in the United States, but what matters is that people is made all equaly, and all people has the same rights. Not because someone is a border patrol will have the right to kick or touch an illegal person, as the kid on the first stanza thinks, and says “I can take you wherever I want, but don’t ask questions because I don’t speak Spanish. I can touch you wherever I want but don’t complain because I ‘ve got boots and kick – if I have to”. Whitman wrote in ambitious proportions, while creating a style of rhythmic structure, creating stanzas and complex lines. By Whitman making his works synonymous it truly recognizes him as a great American Poet. With Whitman using free verse poetry he was able to change the original idea of structure with the rhythm of cadence, this helped people to emphasize poetry as an expression. With Whitman he uses non-orthodox type of structuring his poetry; he traditionally does not have a type of length for his works of stanzas, poems, or his lines.
From taking a look at the poem without even reading it, a reader can see there is a certain form. The poem is, “organized into a single sentence divided into four clauses.” (Youngberge 152). What caught my eye was that the stanzas are a total of four words. On the first line of every stanza there are three words. On the second line of every stanza is just one word. In a typical family, there are parents that expected to hear things when their teenager is rebelling against them: slamming the door, shouting at each other, and protests on what they could do or what they should not do. Their little baby is growing up, testing their wings of adulthood; they are not the small child that wanted their mommy to read a book to them or to kiss their hurts away and most probably, they are thinking that anything that their parents told them are certainly could not be right. The poem talks about a conflict between the author and her son when he was in his adolescence. In the first stanza, a misunderstanding about a math problem turns into a family argument that shows the classic rift between the generation of the parent and the teenager. Despite the misunderstandings between the parent and child, there is a loving bond between them. The imagery, contrasting tones, connotative diction, and symbolism in the poem reflect these two sides of the relationship.
She defines her idea of what is right in a relationship by describing how hard and painful it is for her to stray from that ideal in this instance. As the poem evolves, one can begin to see the author having a conflict with values, while simultaneously expressing which values are hers and which are unnatural to her. She accomplishes this accounting of values by personalizing her position in a somewhat unsettling way throughout the poem.
I wanted to write something about fleeting pleasures – a bunch of flowers, a conversation with a stranger - and the ambiguous impossibilities of trying to preserve them. Although a poem is of course a preservation of sorts. I don't like using full rhyme in my poems, it sounds too strident to me. I prefer near rhymes.
Poetry requires more than just a verse. It must appeal to your mind and generate emotion. It should be constructed in a way that appears so simple, yet is intricate in every detail. Dylan Thomas's poem, Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night is a brilliant poem that appears so simple, yet upon looking closer it's complexity can be seen.
