Breaking the Rules
They are many different forms of poems that writers make. Poems are meant to read in order to go beyond traditional form of thinking. The poem “Read This Poem from the Bottom up” by Ruth Porritt is a reverso poem in which you can read the poem from bottom up to top down. This would be consider a free verse poem and yet saying it’s a free verse could be consider an oxymoron to free verses because it must have the same words to read from the top down to bottom up. This poem has all the ingredients to be consider a good poem. The purpose of the poem is to break traditional form of thinking and challenge the narrator to break the rules of how poem can be written.
From the beginning the title of the poem the author says “Read this Poem from the Bottom up”, the author Porritt wants its narrators to take an unorthodox way of reading this poem. As the narrator starts from the bottom of the line the authors writes “and feel what it’s like to climb stairs.” The author acknowledges that it’s something that the narrator has never done or attempted. The second line the author writes “ while trying not to notice the effort/ of moving against gravity of habit,/A force that usually pulls you down,” Porritt desires the narrators to challenge the orthodox way of reading, and not doublethink or challenge the unorthodox way of exploring a poems. The author then states how easy it to read this poem in an unorthodox war Porritt writes “Line by line, to the bottom of the page/But now you’re going the other way/ past the second story”. The author recognizes the narrator just read this with ease, “/to the top of penultimate line” as if the poem is pyramid that once you read all the words at the top their only one point. This seem to reinforce what he said from the beginning that if you go against the grind, it may be smoother than what anybody would consider difficult .
This poem “ Read from the Bottom up” has every element to be consider a great poem, it inspires to think different the diction of words seem weird but yet it accomplished it point to go beyond a normal point of view and see things further then are. The purpose was accomplished the central theme is challenging to understand, but that was the whole of the poem to challenge traditional thinking and think beyond ourselves.

The poem is written in the style of free verse. The poet chooses not to separate the poem into stanzas, but only by punctuation. There is no rhyme scheme or individual rhyme present in the poem. The poems structure creates a personal feel for the reader. The reader can personally experience what the narrator is feeling while she experiences stereotyping.
From the combination of enjambed and end-stopped lines, the reader almost physically feels the emphasis on certain lines, but also feels confusion where a line does not end. Although the poem lacks a rhyme scheme, lines like “…not long after the disaster / as our train was passing Astor” and “…my eyes and ears…I couldn't think or hear,” display internal rhyme. The tone of the narrator changes multiple times throughout the poem. It begins with a seemingly sad train ride, but quickly escalates when “a girl came flying down the aisle.” During the grand entrance, imagery helps show the importance of the girl and how her visit took place in a short period of time. After the girl’s entrance, the narrator describes the girl as a “spector,” or ghost-like figure in a calm, but confused tone. The turning point of the poem occurs when the girl “stopped for me [the narrator]” and then “we [the girl and the narrator] dove under the river.” The narrator speaks in a fast, hectic tone because the girl “squeez[ed] till the birds began to stir” and causes her to not “think or hear / or breathe or see.” Then, the tone dramatically changes, and becomes calm when the narrator says, “so silently I thanked her,” showing the moment of

The form of the poem is open because there are no specific instances where the lines are similar. The words in each stanza are divided into each of the three growth stages or personal experiences. Each stanza is composed of words that present a logical flow of growth through the entire poem. The words in the poem do not rhyme and the lines are different lengths.
Despite the beauty described in the first few stanzas of the poem, it was the feeling of doubt and pondering that approached at the end of the poem that truly was the most thought provoking. Instead of just writing of beauty, Poets must realize that they may be leading people to false ideals, and in doing so that they may actually be causing individuals to believe in something that is nothing more than a dream. This realization makes the image of the questioning poet by far the most important in the piece.
The first two lines of each poem start off with an obvious difference in translation styles. “High, high from the summit of the peak, / Whatever way I look, no limit in sight!” and “High on the mountain top / I can see to every horizon” begin the poem by Watson and the Wandering Poet respectively (1-2). Watson’s use of repetition of the word “high” can be interpreted by a reader as having the feeling of a larger mountain or peak. Conversely, the Wandering Poet’s translation may make this mountain seem smaller and less important. The Wandering Poet’s translation also gives the reader less room for interpretation through his structure and imagery. Throughout the poem two phrases are repeated many times, emphasizing their importance, and giving them more power. As they are repeated the reader is shown the indifference of the narrator when he says, "First they came for the ..." "and I did not speak out Because I was not a..." (Niemöller, 1-6). These phrases and their interchangeable endings show how the narrator does not care who is facing troubles as long as it is not them. This indifference is detrimental because it shows a lack of empathy and cares for others in the narrator. Niemöller's repetition of these two phrases during his poem highlights the narrator's consistent disregard for people different than them. A shift in the pattern of thinking of the narrator is seen when he says, "Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me." (Niemöller, 7). After repeatedly ignoring the injustices against others the narrator realizes their mistake when they find themself in the same situation as the people they had previously ignored. This change in how the narrator thinks shows how their lack of action to help others face their injustices was done so partly in ignorance. In the first stanza, the speaker creates an image in the reader’s mind by saying “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood” (Line 1). By saying the color yellow, the reader is now thinking it is probably Fall. The reader also knows the speaker is at a fork in the road, by the word diverged.
