Kemet So many Americans today are in the dark about the true origin of the African descent. From my past experiences in history classes, the teacher of coarse job is to teach from the textbook. The problem with that is the whole truth does not lie between those pages of how African culture became about. I will discuss the first king of Egypt and how his story applies today. Kemet is the origin name of what is called Egypt today. The other name is called The black land .” Kemet is the original place where the study of African culture and the people. This is where Africans originated from. Egypt is a place that is very big on religious values and theirs is based on polytheistic beliefs and rituals which is called Holy Trinity. Mummification is required in the kemetic religion because of the belief in the afterlife. They felt the need to preserve the body by mummifying the dead to keep the body in tact and the spirit safe until the afterlife. Mummification relates to Egypt, because before the Old Kingdom, the Egyptians used mummification, but instead of using chemicals such as Natron, they preserved their dead by desiccation. Before the Egyptians would then bury their dead in the arid desert with the deceased’s belongings. However, the wealthier Egyptians began to bury their dead in tombs, and used artificial mummification, which is removing the internal organs and wrapping the body in linen and burying them in coffins. But by the New Kingdom, the Egyptians perfected their mummification process, and had elaborate funerals for the deceased. Egyptian mummification is not used by the Egyptians frequently today, but the discoveries and texts were important in discovering how the Egyptians progress in science and technology.

He goes on to state that he calls African American Studies “a dilemma at the crossroads of history” (Clark 32). According to the ancient Pharaohs believes the mummification was done because the mummified body is the key for the dead man to get to the afterlife and any mistake that leads to the wreckage of the body, the dead person will lose his chance to get to the afterlife. (The British Museum, 2007) If the body of a person was wrecked, he would lose his chance to get the afterlife. For such a reason, so much effort was put in the mummification process to make sure that the body is well protected, especially for the rich pharaohs that have paid a big amount of money for the mummification process. For example, Khufu, an ancient Egyptian pharaoh, spent nearly twenty years building a pyramid as his tomb to protect his mummified body and to assure that he will arrive to the afterlife peacefully. (Smithsonian, 2012) When a king in ancient Egypt die, a great amount of effort was put in is funeral and mummification process, whereas when poor or middle class people died, nobody cared about their death except his family and he had an ordinary funeral. The burial practices in Ancient Egypt were intricate and they preserved it through the ancient times. This was done due to their belief that it is important in order to guarantee immortality of the dead after their death. Their burial practices consist of preserving the body of the dead by a form called mummification. Family members of wealthy families, who were able to afford such ceremonies, had the body artificially mummified and buried in stone tombs. These practices involved the process of taking the body to a tent where an embalmer will wash the body with good-smelling palm wine, removing the internal organs, except for the heart, and placing them in canopic jars. The body is then covered in natron to dry out all the remaining liquids inside and outside the body. Another process of washing and stuffing was done after 4 days and finally the body was wrapped in linen.
The Ancient Egyptians called their country Kemet, which means “Black Land.” The dark soil from the Nile River was very fertile. The Nile overflowed at the same time every year, leaving farmers with very fertile soil. The Nile provided much needed water for their crops during the dry season by using their irrigation system. The Nile River also provided the Egyptians with drinking water, and a way for them to travel, allowing them to explore and trade. In addition, the desert around the river was called “Red Land” by the Egyptians. This is where they lived, grew and prospered. The desert provided much gold for the Egyptians to trade with other countries or to keep for themselves. They brought back silver from Syria, cedar wood, oils, and horses from Lebanon, copper from Cyprus, gems from Afghanistan, ebony, wood, and ivory from Africa, and incense from Punt.
In the history of Africa, and in the history of the civilized world, the Egyptian civilization was one of the most powerful and great civilized Empires of the old world. The main reason why the narrator mentioned the Egyptian Empire in the documentary was its influence on the other civilizations in the Africa. The Egyptian Empire influenced the other empires by both culture and religion.
The need for African cultures to find a common historical root that could unify the people of Africa cannot be overemphasized. In this globalized world, cultures continue to be defined with a focus on the present and the future. Like Kwesi Dickson stated, “The Africa of today is not the Africa of yesterday. Times have changed”. Both of these writers, Kwame Anthony Appiah and Frantz Fanon, explore the notion of cultural identity and the importance of it. There is no easy solution to what they are arguing, however it is possible to look forward by being informed about the past and the present.
Culture in Egypt is rich and deep. Having one of the oldest cultures dating back to before the pharaohs; Egypt’s culture is well developed and distinctive. With a religious cultured background, Egypt is developing rapidly into a restructured culture, combining old with new. An overview shows a complex structured culture built on many influences.
