The minds of many African American’s go to waste due to individual ignorance of their people and thus of themselves. The discussion of whether Historically Black Colleges and Universities are still necessary in the 21st century has taken place in recent years. Within the discussion many debate that due to the fact that the world is no longer like it was in the 1800’s, the time period in which Historically Black Colleges and Universities were created, the purpose of them no longer exists. However, the cultural significance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities seems to be overlooked by those who argue their importance and relevance in a time where blacks have the option of attending predominantly white institutions (PWIs). The purpose and grounds on which Historically Black Colleges and Universities were developed are still being served. The need to increase efforts to not only rouse, but support Historically Black Colleges and Universities is necessary now more than ever in order to preserve our past, fulfill the purpose of our present, and ensure our future.
Black history month is an observance in the United States that is celebrated in the month of February to remember all of the important African Americans in history. The aspect of African-American Studies is key to the lives of African-Americans and those involved with the welfare of the race. African-American Studies is the systematic and critical study of the multidimensional aspects of Black thought and practice in their current and historical unfolding (Karenga, 21). African-American Studies exposes students to the experiences of African-American people and others of African descent. It allows the promotion and sharing of the African-American culture. However, the concept of African-American Studies, like many other studies that focus on a specific group, gender, and/or creed, poses problems. Therefore, African-American Studies must overcome the obstacles in order to improve the state of being for African-Americans.
Professor Colin Palmer, author of “Defining and Studying the Modern African Diaspora,” is a Jamaican-bred historian.1 He studied at the University College of the West Indies/London and the University of Wisconsin.1 Dr. Palmer has taught history classes at Oakland University and the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York and has served as the Chair of the Department of History for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.1 Additionally, Palmer has written numerous books on Black culture, including Slaves of the White God: Black in Mexico, 1570 – 1650, Human Cargoes: The British Slave Trade to Spanish America, 1700 – 1739 and Passageways: An Interpretive History of Black America.1 Based on his upbringing, schooling and work experience, Professor Colin Palmer is more than qualified to write about the modern African diaspora.
The time has come again to celebrate the achievements of all black men and women who have chipped in to form the Black society. There are television programs about the African Queens and Kings who never set sail for America, but are acknowledged as the pillars of our identity. In addition, our black school children finally get to hear about the history of their ancestors instead of hearing about Columbus and the founding of America. The great founding of America briefly includes the slavery period and the Antebellum south, but readily excludes both black men and women, such as George Washington Carver, Langston Hughes, and Mary Bethune. These men and women have contributed greatly to American society. However, many of us only know brief histories regarding these excellent black men and women, because many of our teachers have posters with brief synopses describing the achievements of such men and women. The Black students at this University need to realize that the accomplishments of African Americans cannot be limited to one month per year, but should be recognized everyday of every year both in our schools and in our homes.

Unfortunately this scenario happens way too often. Lots of black students do not receive the knowledge that they need to further their education in college and many students that do try to further their education do not end up finishing. Because they missed out on so much information they have a very difficult time doing their work and get the feeling that they need to drop out. It is unfortunate that today, not all students can receive a good education and have a chance a furthering their education and becoming successful. This is why it is necessary that the education system change immediately so that all students can receive an equal opportunity to further their education.
In our society today there is still a separate and unequal opportunity in education, which is backed by studies (Hopkins, A., & Garrett, K., 2010). Blacks were acknowledged for their influence just as long as they stayed in their place. Yes, they were acknowledged, but it did not change the way they were seen in white America (Holt, T.C. & Brown, E.B., 2000). Black History is a little different; it is the writing and teachings of the past from the time of slavery up until now.
Learning and teaching African American studies is the foundation to dismantle inequalities in not only America but also the in international communities. Studying and teaching the history of African Americans is essential for contributing to a healthier future; motivating others to broaden their prospective to not only become knowledgeable on a particular people, but also enlightened on vital issues of inequalities when it comes to sexism, ageism, ableism, classism, and of course racism. Study abroad is one of the most effective ways I can acquire global skills and open up to fresh personal and professional opportunities. By studying abroad, I will have the opportunity to see a side of my field of Africana Studies from the lens of the most ethnically and culturally diverse country in Africa. I will develop needed skills as it pushes me as a researcher out of comfort zone to experience another culture, language, environment, and education

African Americans continue the lineage of the slaves who were forcefully removed from their homelands and brought to the southeastern United States. From their ancestors diverse roots in Africa, they developed a distinct culture, incorporating elements from different African cultural traditions, languages and religion. Evidence of this culture in everyday life is deeply embedded in their rituals, folklore, distinctive arts, crafts, religious beliefs, cuisine, language and music. One thing I do know I am open to being corrected when I am wrong about a piece of history.
