In the article, “Keep off the Grass” by Tracy Vence the author writes about the efforts by ecologists to deal with global climate change through the planting of trees. Governments, international agencies and NGOs have done much with the aim of helping preserve and restore the ecosystem. According to Vence, there is a difference between the way ecosystem preservation is being implemented and what is advised by ecologists. The World Bank and the United Nations annually spend billions of dollars to encourage the world to plant trees (Vence, 2016). Planting trees is great, but scientific research must be done to decide if planting trees is the best way in all environments, like savannahs, grasslands and woodlands. Climate change has the potential to bring profound consequences to our world if we continue to ignore it. In our times, serious climate changes have been witnessed all over the world. The most visible climate change events that have taken place is global warming, destruction of the ozone layer, irregular climate patterns, increase of major storms, flooding, and erosion of coastlines. These events have affected all nations in the world. Our food supply is directly related to our climate and irregular climate patterns have resulted in a shortage of food in some parts of the world, as farmers are not able to predict the climate and the farming land can become infertile. Environmental conservancy efforts protect the environment and provide farmers with ways we can contribute to restore the productivity of farms and by reducing pollution. There are many problems in the world as we know it. Rainforests once covered 14% of the worlds land surface, however now it only covers a mere 6%. It is estimated that all rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years. Trees are becoming more needed and used everyday. We need them cut down for many reasons such as paper and timber, while also needing them ‘untouched’ for other reasons like oxygen, we have to ask ourselves, which is more important? At the current rate, most of the rainforests are being cut down for resources like paper and timber, but less importance is being placed on main resources like oxygen.

With increases of 1.5° C to 2.5° C, approximately 20 to 30 percent of plant and animal species are expected to be at risk of extinction. Moreover, the IPCC (2007) purported that climate change has severe consequences for food security in developing countries.

Sea level rise, droughts, floods, hurricanes, landslides, etc. According to the forth assessment report of the IPCC project even with immediate implementation of mitigation strategies global climate change will continue for decades. Climate change is inflicting serious consequences on human wellbeing and will continue to inflict damages in the future. It is estimated that mean global temperature will rise by 1.8 ºC - 4.0 ºC by end of the 21st century (Izaurraade, 2009). A new global climate model predicts that in the coming decade the surface air temperature is likely to exceed existing records (Smith et al., 2007). Growing season temperatures in the tropics and subtropics by end of the 21st century will exceed the most extreme temperature recorded in the history (Battistic and Rosamond, 2009).
The world today is vastly different from what it was before urbanisation and industrialisation had taken its toll on the world. Since the turn of the new millennium the issue of the environment has suddenly evolved into a widespread issue which is greatly discussed throughout the world. No longer are humans living in a world where the environment is serene or stable but much rather becoming unrecognisable and diminishing before our eyes. The plants, trees and flowers are life forms which God has created for us to enjoy its beauty but it is now solely up to us and many other organisations to protect preserve and respect how fragile our environment really is.
There are many changes that have occurred on this planet within the previous couple of decades however none more prevalent than climate change. Some time ago known as an global warming, climate change has been characterized as a change in worlds atmosphere designs, specifically, a change obvious from the mid to late twentieth century onwards and ascribed to a great extent to the expanded levels of air carbon dioxide delivered by the utilization of petroleum products. Trees are one of the most important parts of the biosphere. They provide oxygen, which is one of the largest producers of life. Humans live and strive off of oxygen every second of their lives. Not just humans need oxygen to survive and thrive on Earth, but animals, and other creatures on the planet do as well. Trees are a huge part of all life and if they were gone, there would consequently be no form of life. Not only do trees create all forms of life, but they create beautiful surroundings for an area and create a comfortable and shady environment for all surrounding life. Even though trees seem to be everywhere you look, the planet is losing billions upon billions of them a year. Anywhere from three billion to six billion trees are lost every year, ("How Many Trees Are Cut Down Every Year? Rainforest Action Network Blog. N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Apr. 2014”). With this fact in thought, it shows that planting one tree can create a bigger difference than you realize.
