In Never Let Me Go, Kazuo Ishiguro utilizes a flashback narrative structure in order to help Kathy continue on with her life after recalling her difficult past. Mentally preparing herself to donate her organs and ultimately becoming “complete”, which is essentially dying, she wants to retrace her life in order to come to a point of acceptance so that she can move on and comprehend her relationships with Tommy and Ruth. Throughout the novel, Ishiguro has Kathy quickly switching the topic of her speeches and quickly switching between flashbacks. Due to this, the order of the plot is all over the place. The novel is not in chronological order and seems to get sidetracked at times. She may begin by recalling a serious and impactful event in her
life but easily get sidetracked by tiny details that occur throughout the flashback rather than focusing on the main idea. Ishiguro also tells his novel from the first person perspective from the view of Kathy. By utilizing the first person, Ishiguro creates a sense of closeness that the reader develops with Kathy because we are constantly in her head and able to comprehend her way of thinking. However, at the same time, this means that we are only able to see things from Kathy’s perspective and not from other characters’ viewpoints. We also see an imperfect narrator as there are many missing details in Kathy’s memory. Throughout the novel, she sometimes states that she is not able to recall certain details during her flashbacks.
Of the given options of films to watch for the extra credit assignment, I chose to watch HBO’s documentary titled the Unchained Memories: Readings From the Slave Narratives, a production I thought was excellently put together. I was initially apprehensive of the film, thinking it would be extremely boring, but I rather found it to be quite the accessible medium of history both available and appealing to a broad audience including myself. I found the readings of the many slave’s interviews and firsthand accounts to be such a clever way to understand more about the culture of slavery in an uncanted light and it broadened my knowledge of what slavery entailed. The credibility of this film finds its foundations cemented in the undeniable and indisputable
Have you ever been in a situation that could only be described as a case of Déjà vu? In Catch-22, by Joseph Heller, this term fits many of the situations you might see throughout the novel. From beginning to end, we see one trend painted over almost every scene. Throughout Catch-22, the idea of cyclism and seeming disorganization. The plot and story lines do not follow a chronological framework with the many flashbacks and tangents that come without warning. In Catch-22, by Joseph Heller, he forgoes classic organization and adopts a repetitive view to develop characters and to exposit the fear of the strange Catch-22.
Kathy's odd disappearance is haunting the reader all the way throughout the novel. Her husband?s unstable emotional being is somewhat a key to the mystery. We examine his inner thoughts and simultaneous occurrences, but we are still left guessing. There are various situations that lead to multiple possibilities of Kathy?s disappearance. Did John eat Kathy? Did she take the boat and vanish, or did John murder her, and hide her in the Lake of the Woods? These are all possible hypotheses that will be looked into and taken apart to find out what really happened to Kathy.
Almost every main character has two distinct storylines in Station Eleven. The first is life before the outbreak and the second is life after the outbreak. These storylines assist the author in illustrating the dramatic change undergone by the characters. For example, Kirsten Raymonde is introduced as a helpless child actress. “He (Jeevan) heard a whimper, and there was a child… a small actress… she kept wiping her eyes.” (pg. 6) Twenty years later Kirsten is described as an independent, fierce, and deadly survivor. Kirsten’s change is a direct effect from the outbreak. It forces her to grow up and to do whatever it takes to survive. Living in a world where they have successfully created human clones for organ donations, is not a great achievement to mankind in any way, shape, or form. It makes you wonder, where exactly do you draw the line between the advancement of technology and the dehumanization that occurs because of it?" Never Let Me Go is a Novel based in the main character Kathy’s memories of her experience in Hailsham and after she left. Hailsham is a boarding school for children who have been cloned from people considered as low life’s or unsuccessful, the only purpose given too these children are for them to develop into adults and donate as many of their mature organs as they can till they die, or as the students and guardians refer to it “complete”. The author focuses on the sick ways of our current society and warns us about the possible future that may be introduced and excepted, Kazuo Ishiguro writes with the intent of teaching and affecting the reader on an emotional level at the same time.
When denied by his creator he seeks revenge and kills everyone Frankenstein cares about. In Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go people are cloned and the clones are sent to live at Hailsham, a boarding school for clones. When the clones reach the age of about twenty-five they are taken to donate their organs. When all of their organs have been removed or they die they have completed. Two of the children at Hailsham-tommy and Katie- fall in love; they final realize that they are meant to be when tommy is almost completed. They both end up completing and later on the program is shut down. Ishiguro and Shelley force the reader to contemplate the negatives of scientific progressions. Although Shelley and Ishiguro present some similar ideas, their stories are too different to be considered the same. Most in literary culture view Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go as a contemporary interpretation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, although both authors’ works deal with similar concepts the differences between the creators and
Half way through the novel the reader finds out that Kathy, and the other Hailsham students, sole purpose in life is to grow up and donate the his or her vital organs. To the reader, it is confusing why the students do not just run away. However, the way Ishiguro wrote Never Let Me Go it makes sense that they do not. Throughout Kathy and the other student’s lives, they have constantly done what the majority of the students did. Ignorance is why Kathy and the others do not run away from their inevitable deaths. The students simply did not know anything other than growing up to become a donor. All of their lives they have been molded to follow the popular idea, so to the students become a donor is exactly what they want to do with their
In the final chapter of The Impossible Knife of Memory, the main character of the book, Hayley begins it off talking about being in a fairytale. If this was her fairytale, this chapter would be her happily ever after. Before this chapter of the book, her life had been disorganized frequently because of her father’s disorder. Her father, Andy Kincain, a war veteran, has PTSD. Also known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; this disorder is caused by seeing or experiencing a very intense, and terrifying event. In Andy’s case, the war was what caused his condition.
Her willingness to view both of their experiences within a larger system seems confusing to outsiders, such as myself, but to Kiesinger it was the only way she could somewhat heal herself. There are so many situations and stories where reframing of a narrative can be transformative to a person. When a traumatic or negative experience happens, it might seem impossible to have a positive outlook, however; reframing can be helpful. In my life, situations have occurred or problems have appeared that are regrettable yet I find the concept of narrative reframing encouraging for the future. Although, I have not had any traumatic experiences like Kiesinger, I think I could have and should utilize this idea for even minor experiences. For instance, one summer I was living at home for the first time in 10 years because I wasn’t at summer camp. Most of my friends were off at camp or busy working while I was bored, lazy, and somewhat miserable. That would have been a great example of a situation where eventually I could look back on the experience and frame it as a time to be by myself or relax before I didn’t have my summers
Throughout Kazu Ishiguro’s novel Never Let Me Go, he choices to depict children as outsiders to the world which can be furthered by the setting in Britain’s countryside because it helps give a sense distance from true reality. In the framework throughout his novel Ishiguro focuses on three main characters Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy. These three students are seen by others to have an advantage because they were lucky enough to be raised at Hailsham by the guardians. Over the watchful eye of the Guardians the children were able to grow accustom to being different than others. This can be seen when the characters all mature and grow after they leave Hailsham and become accustomed to life at the cottages. There newly found freedoms at the cottages lead them to question many of their previous schooling standards and beliefs. These freedoms can be seen by every student trying to hold on to their sense of individuality through small and random collections. This suggests that humans attempt to create an appearance through their own belongings and incorporate into their own lives. The students at Hailsham are encouraged to seek creativity and individuality in the things they create which could include sculptures, paintings or poems. These many collections that each student holds close to themselves offers them a small chance for control in their life because they can pick and choose the pieces they would like to incorporate into their individual collections.
An author’s way of writing and portraying a character are one of the important things to note when reading a novel. Whether they use third or first person as their view point, have their main character have an underlying dark secret that is not revealed until the end of the novel. However an author wishes to write their novel, there is always a drawback to it. Kazuo Ishiguro’s way of writing his novel Never Let Me Go is in a first person perspective where the narrator, Kathy H., reassess her life of being a clone but the way Kathy remembers and discusses her memories of living in Hailsham is hindered by the fact she inputs her own feelings and thoughts into what happened in the past. Daisy’s father was not a nice person and it as no secret he did not lover her or her mother and criticized everything they did. Her mother did the best she could but always put herself first when it came to protecting against her father. Gestalt theory doesn’t focus on the why, it focuses on the how. Finding out how Daisy is thinking, feeling, what her behavior is, along with bringing up her memories will help her understand what is happening right now and lead her in a direction for positive choices and fulfillment.
