“The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, opens on what should be the worst day in Mrs. Mallard’s life; the day of her husband’s sudden and tragic death. But, Louise did not hear the story the same as most women. Instead, something else was sparked inside of Louise, the key to the freedom she has been longing for. The main conflict in “The Story of an Hour” is between Mrs. Louise Mallard and her unhappy life married to her husband. Louise’s soul was haunted by the life she did not want for herself and felt chained to a man she did not love. But then, her chains were broken and she was “free, free, free”. The death of a loved one is always a difficult and because of her weak heart the news was broke to Louise very carefully. Yes, she was saddened by his sudden, quick, and tragic passing of her husband, Richard, but she was able to see beyond this moment and look at the situation as a whole. Of course seeing his hands folded in the coffin would be hard and funerals are physically and emotionally exhausting on anyone. Louise was able to kept her eyes on the bigger picture and welcomed her new life of freedom with opened arms. It started slowly, but then she could feel the physical exhaustion inside her body and soul slip away and a calmness overtook her. She was able to relax and through that open window was drinking in the elixir of life. Winter was finally over and she was taken in the new spring life. This changing of seasons represents the changing of her life. From the dark, cold, and dreary life with her husband, to the blossoming of the new life she saw unfolding in front of her.
