Karl Marx came up with the theory of survival of the fittest and natural selection. Marx stated that the fitter you are the better life you will live. This theory can be applied to our current contemporary society. The media representation of young men on the street can be looked at in two ways. One being the individual is a Caucasian male who has fallen victim to the streets; as a result he is working in the sex world as a prostitute. This is the view that the majority of the people support within our society, as there are other views but this viewpoint make the most sense. The reasons being these individuals joining the sex world may differ, one thing that is common throughout is the mental and physical abuse that they face on a daily basis.
West and DeVillers came up with three depictions of male prostitutes. One of these depictions talks about how runaway young become prostitutes as a last resort (as cited in Kaye, 2010, pp.88). Often times these run away youth are facing problems in their households. I have gained some personal knowledge about this topic over the period of me being a student Mount Royal University. These individuals see if they can recruit them into their gangs or extort them for money or a sexual relationship (Kaye, 2010, pp.100). This is a prime example of survival of the fittest. As a result of being weak and vulnerable the older more powerful more individuals will take sexual advantage of you. The second path would be to join a gang while in for protection. Weisberg (1985) concluded that the end result would be the same; you will be under the control of gang and its higher-ranking members. Once on the street they will pimp you or continue to abuse you (Kaye, 2010, pp. 106). You will just become another statistic, and it will be impossible to get out. As many gangs refer to the motto “blood in blood out”, this saying has a literal meaning. As in the majority of the gangs once you join you get jumped in to show your worth.
