Introduction:
In the reading of “Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals,” Kant mentions that there are three propositions of morality. He then continues on to indicate that our actions can either be done out of duty or out of desire. Afterwards, Kant generates that our maxiums are a fraction of our actions and it turns into a universal law. In this essay, I shall explain what Kant means by “I can also will that my maxim should become a universal law”(Prompt). Also, how it corresponds to the first proposition, which Kant states, which is an action must be from moral duty. Moreover, I will also be providing an example of the first proposition.

This is also where the maxims come into place, in which there has to be a practical reason. When Kant states, that my maxim can also become a universal law, he means that a maxim can turn into a law because the virtuous person practices it so much that it starts becoming a law. As stated earlier a maxim is a rule in which everybody must follow. In which case, everybody must follow and no one can be exempt from the rule.
Kant gives an example in which a person makes a promise and they may or may not keep it. If the person decides to break that promise then the other person will lose confidence in them. In order for people not to break that promise there must be a universal maxim in which a person should not make a promise if they are not willing to fulfill it. If everybody starts doing that, then it becomes a maxim and everybody must follow it. A maxim can be destroyed when the person does not live up to the law that was set, in this case it would be about not keeping a promise. Rendering back to the statement “I can also will that my maxim should become a universal law”(Prompt). “If not, then my maxim must be rejected, not because of any disadvantage accruing to me or even to others… immediate respect for such legislation”(Cahn 80). In order to keep the maxim one must obey it and act according to it. The only reason a person would follow it is because there are acting out of respect and it’s their duty. “Duty is the condition of a will good in itself, whose worth is above all else”(Cahn
