How One's Thinking Led to Death. “The worst enemy you can meet is yourself.” -Zara Thurstra. The title, The Tragedy Of Julius Caesar, portrays Caesar's devastation. But Marcus Brutus would eventually become a tragedy as his egotistical decisions would then eventually lead to his ending. This verse is about a general in Rome, Julius Caesar, and Brutus, a senator who would do anything for the people. Brutus and Cassius believed that one day Caesar would become too powerful, so they decided to kill him. A tragic hero is a person in society with a high social rank who makes senseless decisions that eventually lead to their downfall. “Judge me, you gods! Wrong, I have mine enemies? And if not, how could I wrong a brother?”(4.2.38-39) Brutus replies to Cassius when he says Brutus has done him wrong. When Brutus exclaims, “let the gods judge me.” he is trying to emphasize that he deeply cares for his friends but ironically kills Caesar for Rome. Brutus also displays his trait of egotistical decision when he says, “For look, he, and Caesar doth not change.” (3.1.25). This explains Brutus's flaw of thinking that killing Caesar was right. When Brutus starts to find out he is losing the war he confidently tells Cassius, “No, Cassius no, think not thou noble Roman that ever Brutus will go bound of war.” (5.1.110-112). This tells us that Brutus will not return to Rome in chains and will kill himself instead of ever getting captured so that he will end his life with dignity and courage instead of being taken hostage and being ended by someone else. The second thing Brutus would say to the Romans is “That they have labored to attain this hour.”(5.5.42). This shows that Brutus has worked to get to where he is and he knows that he might die, but he is going to follow through with dignity in his downfall.
