Growing up in a Christian family, I have been told to prepare for the day of Last Judgment and the second coming of Christ. On Judgment day, the dead will resurrect and all will have to stand before the white throne of God to be judged accordingly. Those that are worthy to enter the gates of heaven, believed in the Lord, repented for their sins and obeyed the word of God. However, those who have rejected God, who sinned greatly and did not seek forgiveness, will be condemned to hell. As a child, hearing these stories about an impending apocalypse and eternal damnation triggered fear in me and I worked on becoming a better person. They compel viewers to fear Gods judgment and encourage believers to reconsider every action as preparation for death. These images were used to guide Christians away from sin and temptation. I plan on comparing and contrasting how each artist interpreted the doctrine of the Last Judgment. I will discuss the cultural impact of these images and its change on religious attitudes. In Memling’s, Christ is surrounded by these holy figures and a number of angels bearing instruments. Memling’s version of St. Michael is presented as a soldier in armor that stands on the border between the green, rich soil of heaven and the brown, barren plain of hell. Memling illustrates more crowds of tortured souls on earth, which fills almost the entire lower half of the center panel. Memling places more emphasis on the scenes of Heaven and Hell. Saint Peter greets the long procession of the saved and angels clothe them. The Gates of Heaven are richly decorated with a Gothic archway surrounded by an angelic choir. On the opposite side, are the damned in the fiery depths of hell being tormented by black demons using an assortment of torture
