The artwork that I chose is by an American artist name Randolph Roger. He carved a beautiful sculpture of Nydia. He made the model in 1855 and carved it in 1860. The sculpture is named “Nydia, the blind girl of Pompeii”. Randolph used marble to carve the sculpture of Nydia. The subject is a young blind girl who has an expression of devastation. The way her face is frowned shows me that she is downhearted. Her eyes, eyebrows and mouth is slanted into a frown. She is raising her hand to her ear as if she is using her ears to lead her path. She also has a stick in her hand, which I assume is used to also guide her. The way her body is bent over shows that she trying to get somewhere. Her dress is very fluffy and flowing around, it is also hanging off her shoulder exposing her breast. She doesn’t show any concern that her breast is uncovered. I see that she’s not traveling quickly but gracefully with one foot in front of the other. While …show more content…
Like the skin is mostly smooth because the artist wanted the sculpture to mimic reality. Also the hair and the dress is similar in texture its wavy and folded, it mimics real hair and dress that is flowing in the wind. Light plays a part with the texture because where the sculpture is smooth more light reflect. The sculpture is very balance and symmetrical because it mimics a real person in many ways. I think that was the author mostly intended for viewers to think. I chose this artwork because I found it be very interesting, because it was sculpted very beautifully. Also it was young girl who is blind and have obviously experienced devastation. I think that is what attracted me immediately inside of the museum was her facial and body expression. Has soon has I saw the sculpture I imagined Nydia story. I also found it very intriguing the way her eyes were shut close has her hand hugged her ear. Which was clear that the artist was expressing the importance of Nydia’s
The face of the portrait is detailed, and more naturally painted than the rest of the composition. However, the left iris exceeds her eye and extends past the normal outline. The viewer can see every single brush stroke resulting in a unique approach to the capturing human emotion. The streaky texture combines with the smoothness flow of the artist’s hand creating contrast between the hair and the face. The woman’s hair is painted with thick and chunky globs of paint. The viewer can physically see the paint rising from the canvas and flowing into the movement of the waves of hair. Throughout the hair as well as the rest of the portrait Neel abandons basic painting studies and doesn’t clean her brush before applying the next color. Because of the deliberate choice to entangle the colors on the brush it creates a new muddy palate skewed throughout the canvas. Moving from the thick waves of hair, Neel abandons the thick painting style of the physical portrait and moves to a looser more abstract technique to paint the background. Despite the lack of linear perspective, Neel uses a dry brush technique for the colorful streaks in the background creating a messy illusion of a wall and a sense of space. The painting is not clean, precise, or complete; there are intentional empty spaces, allowing the canvas to pear through wide places in the portrait. Again, Neel abandons
...hristen Kobke were on display including The Forum at Pompeii. The Forum painting depicts a tragic scene of Pompeii as it sits torn and destructed. Novels and photo albums also are displayed at the end of the exhibition. However, one of the last sculptures on view, Nydia, The Blind Girl of Pompeii (see Fig. 4), provides us with the fact that many people were truly inspired by the great tragic story of Pompeii. The sculpture of Nydia expresses the sadness and horror that many had experienced during that time.
The facility was smaller than expected by many on the tour group. However, the tour guide had a very nice explanation to each of the artworks. By visiting the museum to gain the aesthetic experience it has open many people point of views to how they can express his or her self through art.
From the front view, the sculpture seems like a growing tree. The color is dark brown and the whole body is mainly in the same tone. In this view point she is mainly in a straight line, the top seems larger than the base. We can see that although the sculpture is pretty thin but the weight is well balanced. Her two vividly hands are gently open reaching
The artwork I chose for the art criticism project was ‘The Survivors’ by Kathe Kollwitz. The piece was created in 1923 in Berlin, Germany, where she resided with her husband. She and her husband resided in a poorer area, and it is believed to have contributed too much of her artwork style. ‘The Survivors’ is currently displayed in two museums, the MoMA and the Kathe Kollwitz Museum. In the piece there is a woman directly in the middle, with sunken in cheek bones is draped in a black cloak. Her arms are around three small children, who look very frightened. On each side of her body there are an additional four small children who convey sadness upon their innocent faces. Also, they are outstretching their arms as if they are begging for her to give them something. In the background, on the top left side, there are two elderly men with their heads down, looking as if they are very sad and
This sculpture seems to epitomize the ideal male human form. All of the body parts seem perfectly proportioned and the muscles are beautifully defined as if the image were of an athlete. The image is youthful with a calm demeanor. The right missing forearm looks as if it used to be resting at his side, while the left elbow was probably at a 90 degree angle, with the hand holding something. The slight bend in the left leg gives the impression of movement, as if the image was frozen while walking. The counterpoised stance adds an air of nobility to the "man".
Though most works of art have some underlying, deeper meaning attached to them, our first impression of their significance comes through our initial visual interpretation. When we first view a painting or a statue or other piece of art, we notice first the visual details – its size, its medium, its color, and its condition, for example – before we begin to ponder its greater significance. Indeed, these visual clues are just as important as any other interpretation or meaning of a work, for they allow us to understand just what that deeper meaning is. The expression on a statue’s face tells us the emotion and message that the artist is trying to convey. Its color, too, can provide clues: darker or lighter colors can play a role in how we judge a piece of art. The type of lines used in a piece can send different messages. A sculpture, for example, may have been carved with hard, rough lines or it may have been carved with smoother, more flowing lines that portray a kind of gentleness.
It shows her at eighty years old, she paints her mirror reflection, and she is completely naked. She shows herself as an elderly woman with many imperfections. She shows saggy breasts and wrinkled skin. She illustrates the opposite image of a perfect woman. (Cremmins, 2104) When she discussed this painting, she said "Frightful isn't it? I love it. At least it shows a certain revolt against everything decent". (Cremmins, 2104) This painting shows her literal reflection. It is of her painting how she views herself in the world. She is pure, she is naked, and she is truth. She paints herself with all her differences and flaws. She believed in being human, not being perfect. It shows in this particular piece of artwork, where she focuses on herself instead of others. She doesn't hide who she is for the world and its
The artwork I chose for this project is Almond Blossoms by Vincent Van Gogh. Almond Blossoms was painted in 1890 during the Post-Impressionism movement. The reason I chose Almond Blossom because the painting is calming to view. I selected one of Van Gogh’s paintings because I appreciate his art work.
These aspects of the piece all work together to create unity and balance in the piece. Balance is noticeably seen since the piece is symmetric. There is equal weight and mark making on either side of the piece because of this symmetry. The movement and texture make the piece feel unified. There are multiple areas that lead your eyes around the piece, so you don’t focus on one area for too long. There are also common marks, the texture of the corn for example, found in large areas of the piece. These both make every aspect of the piece seem to all fit together, and nothing seems out of place in the
So far, my favorite work of art is a stele from the Late Classical period thought to have been created by Skopas of Paros. This grave stele, found near the Illissos River, evoked a much different sentiment than the pieces we have seen in the past. The emotion, focus, and style are different from anything we have seen before. By exploring the elements of the piece and contemplating the possibility of why the sculpture was depicted in the manner it was, I will explain why this particular sculpture has impacted me more than other works.
The painting I chose was done by the Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi, entitled “Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting” and also called “Autoritratto in veste di Pittura” in Italian. Artemisia Gentileschi is boldly stating that she is the emblem of art, especially during a time when men dominated the world of art and women weren’t respected as artists or as functioning people in general. To me, this painting captures her looking beyond the struggles that female artists faced, and creating a new future of women composing art that surpasses them only being nude in paintings. Her facial expression is determined and focused, but also insightful and hopeful. Rather than painting herself in a way that accentuates her body in a desirable way,
There are so many angles and curves to this sculpture. It looks as though it's in continual motion; it intertwines within itself. Depending on where you stand, it can take on different shapes and personalities. From across the street, I could see a dancer. Her arms and legs flailing about to the ever-changing beat of the music that has captured her soul. The beautiful dancer is in continual movement; never stopping for a breath, she just keeps dancing. In between the buildings she moves, allowing anyone who wants to stop, to enjoy the show.
People can be changed and blinded by money, fame especially in show business where they constantly compete to each other. From the color scheme, the composition containing symbolic objects to the ways the artist portrayed his character. These elements are enhanced and influenced by classic art such as symmetry and asymmetry, humanism, colors, lighting, sfumato technique. It also has characteristics of modern art like using modern media technology, relating the photo with the content of the movie, and applying the ways of thinking of society today into the picture. The photo has successfully expressed its meaning about the link of fame and evil by showing the transformation of a young beautiful girl turned into a slave of evil. For all that reasons, the photo is one of the most artistic artwork. I believe many people will admire the effort of the artist, and understand that evil is within every
The history of art on a global context assists in the understanding of humanity in prehistoric eras. There exist several visual elements that can be utilized in relating artifacts from around the world. I collected the works includes the Tutankhamen Coffin, Menkaure and His Wife, the Magdalena Abakanowicz of ancient Egypt, Magdalena Abakanowicz of Poland and Stature of Togato Baberini of Rome Italy and the Mask of Hanuman of Thailand. The various organizing principles of the collection include aspects such as rhythm, harmony, variety, proportion, and balance. And not only these, these artworks are related to each other in terms of various elements of art such as value, space, texture, color, form and shape. This paper is basis of the discussion on how the art works from my collection visually relate to each other and how they bring out the fate of humanity is portrayed.
