Jonathan Edwards is well known to be America’s most important early philosopher and most brilliant theologian. Here we see another individual who was highly concerned with the happenings of his time, due to his involvement in various religious and social movements. Edwards’ work primarily concerned itself with the sovereignty of God, an absolute power.
Johnathan Edwards was born on October 5, 1703 in East Windsor, Connecticut. His parents were Rev. Timothy Edwards and Esther Stoddard Edwards. His father was a pastor and his mother, the daughter of a known, influential pastor. He had a fairly interesting childhood, being born into a family of eleven, being the only boy. His youth shaped much of what would become the reason for his later actions. Edwards, at the age of nine was already seen as a model of sanctity. He secretly prayed at least five times per day and often discussed religion with others his age at prayer meetings he held with them.
His education early in his childhood wasn’t very traditional as he was schooled by his father at home. Despite this, Edwards was a brilliant individual and very academically advanced. At the young age of 13, he entered the Collegiate School, better known today as Yale University in 1716. He began studying Newton and Locke and focused on natural sciences and philosophy. He graduated Yale in 1720 and was at the top of his class. This was somewhat surprising given the circumstances throughout his time at Yale. Based on Edwards’ personality, he had a tendency to be very shy, but very studious. He was also judgmental of his classmates at times who didn’t work as hard as him. Although they had much in common in terms of speaking they had even more differences. For example: King tried to motivate people, tried to make them feel good about equality. While Edwards hammered at his congregation using guilt and fear to get them to accept the Lord. Edwards portrayed God as being a less compassionate God than most people picture him as. "God has so many different, unsearchable ways of taking wicked men out of the world and sending them to hell...""...natural men are held in the hand of God, over the pit of hell..." are vivid examples Edwards used to scare his congregation. Edwards described man as loathsome weak people and they owed a great deal of reverence to God. Edward's opinions about man were so straight forward and strong that he even included mere children in his views of pathetic and evil man: "...the foolish children of men do miserably delude themselves in their own schemes and in their confidence and in their own strength and wisdom.
On July 8th 1741, Jonathan Edwards preached the sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” in Enfield, Connecticut. Edwards states to his listeners that God does not lack in power, and that people have yet not fallen to destruction because his mercy. God is so forgiving that he gives his people an opportunity to repent and change their ways before it was too late. Edwards urges that the possibility of damnation is immanent. Also that it urgently requires the considerations of the sinner before time runs out. He does not only preach about the ways that make God so omnipotent, but the ways that he is more superior to us. In his sermon, Edwards uses strong, powerful, and influential words to clearly point out his message that we must amend our ways or else destruction invincible. Edwards appeals to the spectators though the various usages of rhetorical devices. This includes diction, imagery, language/tone and syntax. Starting in his younger years, Edwards struggled with accepting the Calvinist sovereignty of God. Various circumstances throughout Edward’s own personal life led to him later believing in the sovereignty of God. Jonathan Edwards is known greatly as a key figure in what has come to be called the First Great Awakening of the 1730s and 1740s. Fleeing from his grandfather’s original perspective by not continuing his practice of open communion, there was a struggle to maintain that relationship. Edward’s believed that physical objects are only collections of sensible ideas, which gives good reasoning for his strong religious belief system.
Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards were both Christians who had great faith in God and put Him first in their lives. They were both aware of God’s almighty power and that God had greater plans for mankind than what was visible on Earth. Their core way of thinking was similar but their personal understanding of God’s nature was strikingly different. Bradstreet saw a kind and compassionate God and Edwards saw a harsh and jealous God. However, both knew that eternal life awaited those who accepted God into their hearts.
Jonathan Edwards's sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" is moving and powerful. His effectiveness as an eighteenth century New England religious leader is rooted in his expansive knowledge of the Bible and human nature, as well as a genuine desire to "awaken" and save as many souls as possible. This sermon, delivered in 1741, exhibits Edwards's skillful use of these tools to persuade his congregation to join him in his Christian beliefs.
In order to understand Edwards use of language however, one must look at his early life and formative influences. His family undoubtedly shaped his religious career because “[H]e was the only son among the eleven children of Rev. Timothy Edwards and Esther Edwards, the daughter of influential puritan clergymen Solomon Stoddard” (Wachal 1). Growing up in a religious family must have influenced his career path. He chastised his congregation repeatedly in high hopes that they will turn away from their sinful ways. His Puritan beliefs were the impetus force behind his message. The Puritans emphasized the “covenant of works”, which was in the control of humans, and the “covenant of grace”, which was in God 's power to give. (Covenant of grace). Edwards believed that mankind could save itself from damnation depending on the way that they lived. Basically, it is man’s control to save himself of certain damnation. He believed God 's grace could possibly be limited. He proposed a belief that God is judgmental and angry. Philip Freneau and Jonathan Edwards had very contrary biblical allusions, although both men were avid believers in God and Christ. Freneau, the author of “On the Religion of Nature” had a softer, less demanding interpretation of God who he believed worked in unison with Mother Nature while Edwards, the orator of “Sinners In The Hands of an Angry God” depicts God as a merciless force who could rip away your life at any moment and send you to the depths of Hell solely for the reason that he has decided it is your time. Jonathan Edwards was a brilliant man that lived a life that glorified God. He is considered one of the greatest thinkers in America. During his childhood, he was a very smart boy who used that to find out the wonders of God’s creation. Soon he went to Yale University where he got his bachelor and masters degree and started preaching. While preaching, he married a young woman, Sarah, and had 11 children. He was a great preacher to his church. When the great awakening started he was one of the most important figure in the great awakening. He influenced many people and he preached one of the most famous sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, which made many people convert to Christ. After the great awakening he provided sound Gospel to the people. However, he also got persecuted because of preaching what was right. Edwards reacted to the Enlightenment with distrust, and his writing suggests that he felt threaten by the new ideas of the Enlightenment because they were against the church. Edwards believed these thoughts caused the churches to lose their authority over its society and nonetheless those who followed the ideas felt powerless. Even so, there were others who felt empowered by the ideas of the Enlightenment and thought the ideas of the Church were too rigid to be employed in a person’s lifetime. Edwards went on to state in his narrative that “It reveals no new doctrine, it suggest no new proposition tot the mind, it reaches no new thing of God, or another world, not taught in the Bible, but only gives a due apprehension of those things that are taught in the word of God” (420). John Winthrop and Jonathan Edwards were two different authors, writing in two different time periods, but had a common goal. They were working bring people both to Christ and back to Christ. Winthrop was preaching his sermon called, “A Model of Christian Charity” on the ship to the “New World.” Winthrop preached about men giving gifts to other men so that God could give people who have gifts the satisfaction of helping someone in need. On the other hand, Edwards was writing, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" in a time period called the Great Awakening, in an attempt to bring “corrupted people” back to the church with scare tactics. Benjamin Franklin’s father, a candle maker, wanted to give one of his sons as a tithe. He chose Franklin, his tenth son. He sent him off to be educated as a clergyman. Because he was not a successful student, he was sent back to his father after only two years. When he was thirteen he was sent to his brother to learn to be a printer. While he was there he educated himself by reading various books. He thought his intelligence was being limited so he ran away to start his own printing company. After he retired, he turned to science and became an inventor. On the other hand Edwards had a much different background. Both his father and grandfather were ministers. At the age of thirteen he was sent to Yale Collage and four years later graduated with an advanced degree in theology. He then served as a pastor in New York City for a short time but returned to Yale College as a tutor. He later married and after two years of marriage his grandfather died and he was chosen to take his grandfathers place at the pulpit. All this said, you can see that Franklin and Edwards lived vary different lives.
