The characters are Charles- the stepfather, age 35, Johnny-the stepbrother, age 26, Elena-age 17, and Xavier boyfriend/husband, age 21. This story is in honor of my great friend Abbey and the many other women who have been abused. There once was a girl named Elena. She lived in a penthouse in New York City with her step-brother and her step-father. Her step-father, Charles, was a horrendous man. He adopted Elena so that he could get government assistance and spend it luxury items for himself and his darling little boy, Johnny. Johnny is 26 years old, tall, with long brown hair and still lives at home. He is one of those people who peaked in high school. Johnny has a huge room, while Elena’s bedroom is slightly bigger than a closet. …show more content…
Her journal was her one safe sanctuary, somewhere she could express her thoughts and feelings without the punishment of her stepbrother. Elena wrote in her journal that night: I hate the way I look! Why do I have to be so fat!!! What guy would ever want me? My stepbrother don’t stop hitting me and calling me a fat bitch. What is it like to have a man treat you right? It’s not like I have any idea. Maybe someday a man will have kind words to say to me. Maybe someday a man will think I’m beautiful. That will be the happiest day of my life. A couple weeks later, during the Homecoming dance, Elena found the man of her dreams -Xavier Richards. An older man, 21, blond hair, he stood six-foot-tall and had a tan, muscular body from working as a personal trainer. He had gone to the dance with a senior girl, but left with Elena. He was charming, beautiful and knew exactly what to say to make Elena melt. He showered her with compliments; told her that her curves and her glasses made her sexy. He also gave her gifts, like expensive jewelry and flirty clothing. She was putty in his hands and he knew it. Xavier promised that he would take her away from the terrible family that she lived
The storyteller is a 65 year old Hispanic woman from Riverhead, New York. I collected the story over the phone on April 2, 2006. She started off by telling me that the story took place in 1988 on Long Island. Her landlord had told her about a wonderful restaurant that she just had to go to, so on a Friday night the storyteller and her husband decided to try it out. When stepping up to the Jamesport Manor Inn she had a creepy feeling just from looking at the old mansion. She claimed that it had an eerie sort of feel to it and obviously did not look like a typical restaurant.
61.). A young lady and her relationship with three guys. Over her lifetime she experiences love, hurt, and pain in the three relationships. Logan, her first husband, was way older than her. Jody dies at the end of their relationship.
Elena would read books on her fire escape and from the spot she would sit at she could see the couple’s kitchen and backyard. She knew when they were arguing, when one of them was sick, and she was a part of their family without theme even knowing it. What Elena was doing was a term called “voyeurism” which is overwatching in a less stalker way. After a few weeks of the house being vacant because the husband possibly died, a tall blonde boy with glasses named Eugene moves in. Elena had a huge crush on him and she manages to run into him in the hallway. Elena starts a conversation with Eugene and he is blushing a lot which tells Elena he likes her though he is
The Haunting of Hill House is a gothic horror novel written by Shirley Jackson. Supernatural occurrences take place within the house revolving around Eleanor. Eleanor is a thirty-two-year-old woman who never once has felt the sense of inclusion. Eleanor seems to never recall the feeling of delight in her adult years due to the fact that she was a caretaker for her now deceased Mother; who took away most of her freedom by being incredibly restrictive. Dr. Montague, a doctor that specializes in analysis of the supernatural rents Hill House, a supposedly haunted house. During the renting period, Dr. Montague begins an experiment inviting individuals who have had involvement in abnormal events
Although under a fake identity, Francie begins attending school and finds that she truly enjoys it. However, on her way home from school one day, at age fourteen, Francie experiences a horrific moment, one that can never be forgotten. She was molested and nearly raped by a neighborhood sex fiend. As if not traumatizing enough, Francie also watched her mother shoot the man in her defense. Not long after this, an even greater event takes place in Francie's life. She is informed of her father's death, that she is told had been caused of pneumonia.
However, the father’s satisfactory efforts at reconciling his relationship with his son fails and creates more distance between the two. The Father’s first attempt to reconciliate with Johnny is by purchasing him a new scout uniform to replace Johnny’s existing uniform. As John says “I don't want those goon’s down at the church thinking i'm too cheap to buy him one.” (68) Johnny quickly realizes he was not buying the scout uniform for him but for his own reputation. Johnny felt that John was being selfish and instantly saw through John’s fake act. This is why he wasn’t impressed or excited when his father mentioned the uniform. Another poor effort at reconciliation was when he made an inappropriate joke with the scoutmaster and Mr. Redpath.
While reading outside, Elena would peer into an old couple’s window and watch them live their lives to avoid hers. Once the old man had passed away, his widowed wife had moved out of the house, leaving it empty. A few months later, Eugene and his family had moved into the old, abandoned house. When Elena first saw Eugene, she wanted
The Haunting of Hill House written by Shirley Jackson, and Tony Burgess’ People Live Still in Cashtown Corners, are horror novels. Both evoke fear in readers in dissimilar ways. The Haunting of Hill House takes readers on an ominous journey that creates feelings of uneasiness, while Burgess’ novel has a direct approach to create fear, right from a rampant killer’s point of view. Despite the differing approaches on the classic genre, Jackson and Burgess demonstrate that horror stems from isolation. Isolation negatively affects mental health, which produces petrifying chaos and destruction of oneself and others.
Being constantly alone and prohibited to leave her bedroom, she begins to start being delusional with nothing to occupy her time, but to write. With “barred windows for little children and rings and things in the walls” the bedroom is in similarity to a prison cell. (page 648). While John is keeping her away from reality, Jane begins to feel as if the right thing and she won’t be able to get out.

The teller is 24 years old, and works for the state department of education. Originally, he was from the Baltimore area where he attended an elementary Catholic school. He moved to Bell Air in second grade and grew up there. After his parents separated, he moved back to Baltimore to live with his grandparents, and has remained in Baltimore ever since. The sister he mentions in the story moved away to China years ago. A weekend or two ago, he, I, and a few other friends spent the evening in one of our favorite hang-out spots in Columbia, Pub Dog. It was there, sitting in our dimly lit booth, over some beers that I heard him tell this story from his childhood. He spoke in a strangely matter-of-fact tone, considering the weirdness of the story he was telling, and in a smooth, comfortable manner that seemed to indicate he had told the story many times before. Here is the story he told:
