In the story “American History”, by Judith Ortiz Cofer, the setting takes place on a cold gray November day in Paterson, New Jersey as described by the narrator. The narrator is a 14 year old 9th grader named Elena who is Puerto Rican. Elena lives in a melting pot tenement called, “El Building”. Music is constantly playing in this building and joy is always trying to be spread. Elena goes to Public School 13 and she highly dislikes the environment in her school. On the day John F. Kennedy was shot, her city changed in an interesting way. The inciting incident begins when Elena was playing on the playground with some black girls who were bullying her for not spinning the jump rope fast enough. On that cold day Elena’s hands were very cold and she could not keep up. The girls said racial slurs and called Elena names like,”Skinny Bones” which made Elena very sad. Elena was very lonely just trying to make friends but nobody accepted her and she always felt very isolated at all times. …show more content…
The rising actions begins when Elena watches over a Jewish couple who lives in the nice next door house.
Elena would read books on her fire escape and from the spot she would sit at she could see the couple’s kitchen and backyard. She knew when they were arguing, when one of them was sick, and she was a part of their family without theme even knowing it. What Elena was doing was a term called “voyeurism” which is overwatching in a less stalker way. After a few weeks of the house being vacant because the husband possibly died, a tall blonde boy with glasses named Eugene moves in. Elena had a huge crush on him and she manages to run into him in the hallway. Elena starts a conversation with Eugene and he is blushing a lot which tells Elena he likes her though he is
shy. When Elena convinces her mother to let her go to Eugene’s house she knocks silently at his door and a red haired women peeks the door open. Elena explains that Eugene has asked her to come over and study. Eugene’s mom says she does not want him to get close with anybody and does not let Elena come inside. However, even though Eugene’s mom said she just doesn’t want him getting close with anybody at all and they are not staying there long it was probably because of her race and where she lived. Even though Elena was a straight A student, she was still judged by looks and the outside of her book. This broke Elena’s heart and she felt like someone just broke her in half. When Elena comes home the apartment was empty and it was just her. The narrator says that on that night her parents would not be discussing their dreams for the future or life in puerto rico. That night they would talk about the young widow and her two children. In El Building there was complete silence for a while and some women would dress in black for weeks because of the sorrow for the president. That night Elena layed in bed and pretends she is sleeping when her mother walks in. When her mother leaves she presses her face against the window and finally sees the white snow fall from the sky but she doesn’t look down to see it turn gray. In the end of the story it all comes down to racism. From the beginning of the story the way the narrator describes her tenement she described it as a miserable place and the bad part of the city. This showed that she did not like where she was located. Also, in the beginning of the story racism was a big factor. Playing on the playground the black girls made fun of the puerto rican main character which really affected Elena. Also the most distinguishable part of the story is when Eugene’s mom rejects Elena because of where she is from and her race. The story shows the side of the one who has a tough life and is always surrounded by racism.
The book Murdering McKinley: The Making of Theodore’s America by Eric Rauchway examines the murder of President William McKinley and the assassin’s motives that impacted America. Rauchway also reveals to us the making of Theodore’s America through a tragic event to show us how Roosevelt gave it meaning through the start of the Progressive Era with his own political agenda. In her book, First Generations Women in Colonial America, Carol Berkin depicts the everyday lives of women living during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Berkin relays accounts of European, Native American, and African women's struggles and achievements within the patriarchal colonies in which women lived and interacted with. Until the first publication of First Generations little was published about the lives of women in the early colonies. This could be explained by a problem that Berkin frequently ran into, as a result of the patriarchal family dynamic women often did not receive a formally educated and subsequently could not write down stories from day to day lives. The Sixties, by Terry H. Anderson, takes the reader on a journey through one of the most turbulent decades in American life. Beginning with the crew-cut conformity of 1950s Cold War culture and ending with the transition into the uneasy '70s, Anderson notes the rise of an idealistic generation of baby boomers, widespread social activism, and revolutionary counterculture. Anderson explores the rapidly shifting mood of the country with the optimism during the Kennedy years, the liberal advances of Johnson's "Great Society," and the growing conflict over Vietnam that nearly tore America apart. The book also navigates through different themes regarding the decade's different currents of social change; including the anti-war movement, the civil rights struggle, and the liberation movements. Cokie Roberts’ Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation examines women's role in the establishment and development of the United States of America. Throughout the book, Roberts attempts to prove that women have natural characteristics in which they use to their advantage to build a foundation for the future of all women. She examines the lives of some of the most important women in U.S. history, such as Abigail Smith Adams, Mercy Otis Warren, Sarah Livingston Jay, Martha Washington and Mary White Morris. Roberts researched all of the women who “had the ears of the Founding Fathers,”. She believes that since these women lived in such a strange and wonderful time period that they must have strange and wonderful stories to tell. The book
Over the past few decades, research on women has gained new momentum and a great deal of attention. Susan Socolow’s book, The Women of Colonial Latin America, is a well-organized and clear introduction to the roles and experiences of women in colonial Latin America. Socolow explicitly states that her aim is to examine the roles and social regulations of masculinity and femininity, and study the confines, and variability, of the feminine experience, while maintaining that sex was the determining factor in status. She traces womanly experience from indigenous society up to the enlightenment reforms of the 18th century. Socolow concentrates on the diverse culture created by the Europeans coming into Latin America, the native women, and African slaves that were imported into the area. Her book does not argue that women were victimized or empowered in the culture and time they lived in. Socolow specifies that she does her best to avoid judgment of women’s circumstances using a modern viewpoint, but rather attempts to study and understand colonial Latin American women in their own time.
The role of American women has changed significantly from the time the nation was born, to the modern era of the 1950s and 1960s. Many people, "... believed that women's talent and energies ... would be put to the better [use] in the new republic." (Clinton 3) Clearly showing that society has seen the importance of the women's talents and that their skills can be very useful, exploited this and thus, the change of the women's role was inevitable. Society has understood that the roles of women played an important role on all parts of life.

In From Slavery to Freedom (2007), it was said that “the transition from slavery to freedom represents one of the major themes in the history of African Diaspora in the Americas” (para. 1). African American history plays an important role in American history not only because the Civil Rights Movement, but because of the strength and courage of Afro-Americans struggling to live a good life in America. Afro-Americans have been present in this country since the early 1600’s, and have been making history since. We as Americans have studied American history all throughout school, and took one Month out of the year to studied African American history. Of course we learn some things about the important people and events in African American history, but some of the most important things remain untold which will take more than a month to learn about.
