1. In "The Thing in the Forest", the monster represents everything that is going on in the Penny and Primrose's lives that makes them feel out of control and scared. War is ravaging their country and both of their mothers sent them away with no explanation at all. The monster in the woods is described vividly, from the putrid stench it gives off to its mangled features. It seems unstoppable and consumes everything in its path, even an innocent child. 2. Penny and Primrose both went through a similar experience during the wartime, but the rest of their lives differed in various ways. Due to the different paths that their lives followed, Penny had always felt that the day they witnessed the monster in the woods, it had 'finished her off'.
