A.S. Byatt uses symbolism in her story “The Thing in the Forest” to show how children in England during World War II, like herself, felt and reacted to the events that they knew where bad but didn’t understand. This can easily be shown through the sequencing of the plot, the deeper meanings behind characters and places, and the post effects it had the main characters. Symbolism can be seen in many stories that were written about this time frame, one major difference between Byatt’s short story and those others are her connections to the children of the time. Byatt starts off by telling the reader that the girl, Primrose and Penny, were evacuees from the air raids on Britain and that they were by themselves. This allows the readers to start getting the feel for the scared children. Upon arriving at the mansion the two girls made a pact to stay together, “It’s like were orphans, she said to Penny. But we’re not. Penny said, If we manage to stay together….” (Byatt 353). Once allowed to go, the girls went out to wonder the forest, showing their independence and pushing away Alys in the process. The Thing appears scarring Primrose and Penny, then Byatt pushes to the girls’ departure. Once the girls came back the when on a tour seeing each other. Showing that they still are not orphans because they still have each other. This can also be shown when we figure out each girl is still single. They decide to go looking for the Thing but have no luck. Primrose gets caught up in the magic of the forest and tries to figure out what Penny meant by the Thing being more real than themselves. What can be concluded from her thoughts were that she has a connection to the forest and she wants to regain what she lost. Penny finds the “den” of the Thing and finds reminds of its victims. She tries to confront the Thing but she concluded nothing else was there for her and that it was their way of

Symbolism is commonly used by authors that make short stories. Guin is a prime example of how much symbolism is used in short stories such as “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” and “Sur.” In both of these stories Guin uses symbolism to show hidden meanings and ideas. In “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” there is a perfect Utopian city, yet in this perfect city there is a child locked in a broom closet and it is never let out. A few people leave the city when they find out about the child, but most people stay. Furthermore, in “Sur” there is a group of girls that travel to the South Pole and reach it before anyone else, yet they leave no sign or marker at the South Pole. Guin’s stories are very farfetched and use many symbols. Both “Sur” and “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” have many symbols such as colors, characters, objects, and weather. The four types of symbols that Guin uses help the readers understand the themes in her short stories. Although her stories are farfetched, they need symbolism in them or the reader would not understand the theme; therefore the symbols make Guin’s stories much more enjoyable.
Symbolism “acts as webbing between theme and story. Themes alone can sound preachy, and stories alone can sound shallow. Symbolism weaves the two together” (Hall). Symbolism uses the story to convey the theme. Darkness is used in the novel to show the secrecy and lies that the story has. The whole story involves secrecy among two women and a man. Without symbolism the story would just have a very dark house and two very mysterious and disturbed women. Instead there is a feel of secrecy right from the beginning. My first impression of this movie was the simplicity of the settings that were utilized to create the atmosphere. Even though it is a black and white movie there have been major productions with elaborate sets to provide more depth to the overall plot. This however was not the case for The Petrified Forest. To its credit though the lack of scenery was not a factor because of the depth and range of all of the characters.
Some of the main symbols of the novel are The Hanging Wall, the colours of the clothing of the different women and the Eyes. All these symbols add different features to the story which are important. Some add fear, suspense, and overall they all add an important understanding of the story line. Margaret Atwood, was able to successfully create symbols which added depth and helped with the understanding of the novel. The most obvious use of symbolism is the names carved on the trees (3). One tree is described as a “great tree, fair and flourishing without, but rotten at the core” (3). The description of this tree symbolizes the wealthy man who appears to be good and rich on the outside, but is terrible and rotten on the inside. This has a supernatural tone to it, which is a common theme in gothic literature. Another use of symbolism comes into play at the beginning of the story. Tom Walker begins the tale by taking a shortcut through the swamp (2). By taking this shortcut, he is set on the path that will result with the death of his wife and eventually his own death and release of his soul. The shortcut through the swamp symbolizes taking shortcuts in life, which usually do not end well. For example, Tom Walker took a short cut by making a deal with the devil to gain his fortune. In the end, he was paranoid and died alone. By taking a shortcut in life, Tom lived a wealthy life, but not a life rich with substance and

Miss.Strangeworth never gave any of her roses away, although the tourists often asked her for roses. The roses belonged on many pleasants streets and it bothered Miss.Strangeworth to think that many people would be wanting to carry them away.She was a very stingy old lady who would never give any single rose away. She never gave a rose away because her roses were very special to her. Tourists stopped through the town to admire Miss.Strangeworth’s roses. She had never spent more than a day outside that town in all her long life.
